MILITARY CHILD OF THE YEAR AWARD 2017

Operation Homefront has announced that nominations for the 2017 Military Child of the Year Awards are being

accepted online at MilitaryChildOfTheYear.org now through December 5th, 2016.

This award is presented to an outstanding child from each branch of service. The recipients each receive a $10,000 award and a

laptop. They are flown with a parent/guardian to Washington, D.C., for a special awards gala on April 6th, 2017.

This award recognizes children who stand out among their peers. Ideal candidates for the award demonstrate resilience, strength of character, and thrive in the face of the challenges of military

life.

Anyone can nominate a child. Family members, teachers, coaches, counselors, clergy, neighbors and friends are

encouraged to nominate outstanding military children. For more information on how to nominate a child in your community,

please visit their website.

SPOUSE SURVEY OPPORTUNITY If you have utilized the Community Counseling Program

UP FOR A HALLOWEEN HAUNT? The ultra-popular regional Halloween attraction,

"HALLOWEEN HAUNT" is back to Theatre 29! Cyrus Short directs this highly anticipated return of the 11th incarnation of the Morongo Basin's premiere seasonal event, entitled "Resurgence". For 2016, adventurous

souls will be self-guided as they explore a haunted man-sion that was unknowingly built on top of an abandoned

mine after its collapse, trapping the workers within. Fright fans are promised a terror trip they will never forget this year. Do you think you have the nerve to

explore the mansion and see what may be lurking with-in? If so, tickets will be available at the door for $7.00

each for individuals, and for groups of 6 or more, $5.00 each at the door. The mansion doors are now open through Halloween. All performances of this spooky seasonal scare fest will run 1830-2200 on October 28-31.

HOWL-O-WEEN AT THE LIVING DESERT The Living Desert’s family-friendly Halloween event returns with the wildly popular “Howl-O-Ween: A Not-So-Spooky Zoo

Adventure”. The 22nd annual Howl-O-Ween is set for Sunday, October 30 (1000-1400—cost is included with admission) or Monday, October 31st (1800-2030—cost is $10). Visitors are encouraged to dress up in their favorite costumes to enjoy the exciting activities. Howl-O-Ween attendees ages 12 and under will receive a candy bag to hit the trick-or-treat trail filled with a variety of treat stations. New this year: Howl-O-Ween visitor ghosts, goblins, and super-heroes can visit the park’s African

animals– trick or treat with the cheetahs and zebras, say boo to the warthogs, and wander through Village WaTuTu! Additional activities include pumpkin bowling, pumpkin decorating, face painting, a monster maze,

live entertainment and more. Zookeepers will provide special animal encounters and The Living Desert’s zoo mascots will also be making appearances throughout the day. Be sure to get your

CITY OF 29 HALLOWEEN FUN FEST ON HALLOWEEN Stop by the Community Center (74325 Joe Davis Dr) for a safe, fun alternative to house-to-house trick-or-treating! The Fun Fest is FREE and will run on Halloween night (Oct. 31st) from 1800-2000. This event is geared toward children ages 10 and

under and features games, trick-or-treat bags, and a not-so-scary haunted house.

TOWN OF YUCCA VALLEY SPOOKTACULAR EVENT ON SATURDAY, OCT. 29TH On Saturday, October 29th from 1300-1800 at the High Desert Nature Museum, children of all ages are encouraged to

drop by with their parents for their “Halloween Spooktacular”. Join museum staff for a day of Halloween themed games and activities. Dress in costume or come as you are and enjoy some frightfully fun activities (face painting,

L.I.N.K.S. FOR SPOUSES ON NOVEMBER 9th L.I.N.K.S. (Lifestyle, Insights, Networking, Knowledge, Skills) is an official Marine Corps program which helps families connect to the Corps. This full day session

for spouses will help guide participants through “the maze” of military benefits & services, teach participants how to read a LES, discuss strategies and the chal-

lenges of separations, deployments, moving on military orders, and more. This course will help anyone increase their knowledge & skills as a military spouse. The next class takes place next Wednesday,

PALM SPRINGS VETERANS DAY PARADE & FIREWORKS The City of Palm Springs proudly presents its 20th annual Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade on Friday, November 11th, at 3:30 p.m. in downtown Palm Springs. The parade begins at Ramon Road & Palm Canyon Drive and heads north on Palm Canyon Drive to Alejo Road. The parade lasts approximately one hour and concludes with a post parade patriotic concert & fireworks finale at the intersection of Amado Road and Palm Canyon Drive. (Planning to attend? Be sure to arrive in Palm Springs early (before 1430) as they start closing down roads in preparation for the parade.)

family readiness volunteer! Volunteers are needed in every unit to assist with making the family readiness program

successful. Volunteer opportunities can include helping with administrative work in the office, planning & helping out at events, and more. Contact your FRO to find out specifics on

YOUTH THEATER WORKSHOP STARTS NEXT SATURDAY!

Join accomplished performer and instructor Bianca Stoker for this fun and rewarding Youth Theater Workshop Series with a focus on improv. This workshop is specifically designed to provide youth participants ages 10-18 with an exciting theatrical experience. Learn about the art of improvisation! Come shout, dance, and play. Classes go 1000-1130 at the Yucca Valley Com-munity Center on Saturdays (November 5, 12, and 19th). The cost for this workshop series is $30. BABY SHOWER AT THE LA KINGS GAME ON NOVEMBER 17th—REGISTER ASAP BECAUSE SPACE IS LIMITED! The LA Kings, Bob Hope USO and March of Dimes are looking for 50 current military members and/or military spouses who are expecting a baby. We have teamed up to help you prepare for your upcoming arrival with helpful information while enjoying a

night of LA Kings Hockey. And the Mom-to-be gets to bring a guest (18 years or older) along for the night. The fun starts at 6:00pm on Thursday, November 17th at the Staples Center. Best of all, this event is FREE & round trip transportation from 29
