Upgrade OEM Cloud Control 12cR1 no BP1 on OEL 6.1 to

OEM Cloud Control 12cR4 on OEL 6.5

In the article you will have a look at the steps and guidelines for upgrading

OEM Cloud Control 12cR1 no BP1 on OEL 6.1 to OEM Cloud Control 12cR4 on OEL

6.5. This initial configuration is described here. The OMR is Oracle 11.2.0.3

database. Looking at the certification matrix on MOS you will notice that

platforms are certified and supported.

The upgrade will be executed in two stages:

1. Upgrade OEL 6.1 to OEL 6.5

2. Upgrade OEM Cloud Control 12c no BP1 to OEM Cloud Control 12cR4

As far as the OEM CC 12c is concerned, the Oracle documentation suggests an

upgrade path as described here. I will slightly deviate from the suggested

upgrade path. I will follow the steps listed below:

1. Patch the OMS with Bundle Patch 1 and some extra patches.

2. Upgrade the OMS plug-ins to OEM CC 12cR2 plug-in version.

3. Upgrade the Management Agent plug-ins to OEM CC 12cR2 plug-in version.

4. Upgrade the OMS patched with Bundle Patch 1 to 12c Release 3

(12.1.0.3).

5. Upgrade OEM CC 12cR3 12.1.0.3 to OEM CC 12cR4 12.1.0.4

The reason for upgrading the plug-ins to 12.1.0.2.0 is the following error

message which I got while attempting to upgrade to OEM CC 12cR3 after

applying BP1 to OEM CC 12cR1.

Along with the guidelines and steps for the upgrade I will describe the

errors encountered that I documented and their respective solution.

1. Upgrade OEL 6.1 to OEL 6.5

Similar upgrade of OEL 6.1 to OEL 6.5 can be found here.

1.1 If during agent startup you encounter the problem described below

1.4 Stop Oracle Clusterware and Oracle databases where the upgrade is

to be performed.

1.18 Start GI and database on the node.

1.19 I had to add few disks to the VM in order to provision around

80GB space to accommodate the need for extra disk space for the

OEM CC installation disk footprint and staging areas. Look here

for details. For adding a single disk you can follow the

procedure below:

- Add disk to system

- Partition it via fdisk. Set partition type to 8e (Linux LVM)

- run pvcreate initialize the partition for LVM

- run vgextend to expand your existing volume group with the new device.

- run lvextend to grow your logical volume.

- finally, run resize2fs (assuming you are using ext3/4) to grow the

file system.

2.1 Patch the OMS with Bundle Patch 1 and some extra patches.

Control 12c Release 12.1.0.1 Bundle Patch 1 (BP1) for all

available platforms (Doc ID 1430518.1)’,‘Announcing Enterprise

Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 12.1.0.1 Bundle Patch 1(BP1)

and 12.1.0.2 Plug-ins (Doc ID 1395505.1)’ and ‘Enterprise Manager

Cloud Control Workbook for Applying Bundle Patch 1 (February

2012) and 12.1.0.2 Plug-ins (Doc ID 1393173.1)’.

MOS states ‘The EM Cloud Control 12.1.0.1 Bundle Patch 1 (BP1)

patches are mandatory for the OMS and Agent. These are

consolidated patch(es) that address multiple bug fixes and are

required as a minimum for future bug fixes to the EM Base

Platform 12.1.0.1 OMS and Agent. The OMS Bundle Patch is also

required before you can deploy the new 12.1.0.2 Plugins to the

OMS’. The following patches will be applied to the respective

components in the specified order.

After applying BP1 you need to apply to the OMS home the

following additional patches

1. Apply the Patch 14040891

2. Then apply Patch 14209224

Refer to Annex A for detailed instructions how to perform the

patching and the output of the patching.

2.2 Update the plug-ins to 12.1.0.2.0

Oracle® Enterprise Manager Bundle Patch 1 Application Guide 12c

Release 1 (12.1.0.1) is a good read before starting deploying

plug-ins. The MOS note ‘EM 12c : Refresh From My Oracle Support

And Opatch Update Jobs Are Failing With Checking for updates at

EM Store Error: ARU Connection failed:0:Connection Establishment

Timed Out (Doc ID 1457376.1)’ will help you ensure proper

connectivity to MOS. Look at this OTM thread if you still have

problems downloading plug-ins.

Let’s determine the plug-ins that needs to be upgraded. Run the

For you to successfully deploy the plug-ins download all versions

and attempt to deploy the latest.

2.2.1 Upgrading Exadata Plug-in

Select the plug-in and select deploy on OMS.

Enter the sys password and press continue.

Wait for the verification to complete. Press Next.

Make a backup as suggested.

2.3 Upgrade the patched OEM CC 12cR1 with BP1 to OEM CC 12cR3

Make a full backup of the OMR database.

Invoke Oracle installer.

Select Skip.

Wait for the prerequisites checks to complete.

Select Upgrade->One System Upgrade

Specify the new location.

Enter the passwords.

Let the installer fix the issue by pressing Yes.

Execute from sqlplus

SQL> grant execute on dbms_random to dbsnmp;

Grant succeeded.

SQL>

Select the plug-ins you want to install.

Stop the OEM CC 12CR1

Enter the appropriate information.

Review the information prior to the upgrade.

Wait for completion.

In my case OMS start failed. I had to start it manually and click

retry.

Wait until prompted to run scripts as root. Run the scripts as root.

Review the installation

2.4 Upgrade the OEM CC 12cR3 to OEM CC 12cR4

As the OMR database is 11.2.0.3 apply the following patches prior

to the installation

Apply Patch 11061801

Apply Patch 13496395

Look at Annex A for details of patch application. Failure to do

so will result in the following error while upgrading to OEM CC

12cR4

Backup the OMs database.

Invoke Oracle installer.

Select Skip.

Wait for the checks to complete.

Select Upgrade->One system Upgrade

Select the location. In my case was a little misunderstanding.

Enter passwords.

I was reminded that need to upgrade the agents.

Upgrade the agents.

Select upgrade agents

Add the agent

Review and click Submit.

Pay attention to it.

Wait for the agent upgrade to complete.

Look at agent upgrade results

Confirm that the status is success.

Clean up the old agents.

Select agent for clean up.

Review and press submit.

Wait until cleanup completes with success.

Check the agent

Fix the issues

./emctl config emkey -copy_to_repos

./emctl status emkey

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 3



The EMKey has been copied to the Management Repository. This

operation will cause the EMKey to become unsecure.

After the required operation has been completed, secure the EMKey

by running "emctl config emkey -remove_from_repos".

The EMKey is configured properly, but is not secure. Secure the

EMKey by running "emctl config emkey -remove_from_repos".

Enter the passwords.

Press Yes to let the installer fix it for you.

Review

Select the additional plug-in.

Stop the OEM CC 12cR3 before you can continue.

Enter the requested info.

Review the information prior to the upgrade.

Wait for either error or for the prompt to run a scripts as root.

Here OMS startup failed. I started it manually and retried the

operation.

This is from the patch note. In my case I had ORA-20103 error. Useful notes

are:

When applying a patch that includes post install scripts and

command "emctl applypatch repos" needs to be run, this could fail

with the following error:

ORA-20103: Patch pre-req failed, EM Jobs are in running state.

Please stop all jobs and retry

Rediscovery Notes:

when running "emctl applypatch repos", the command fails with

error "ORA-20103: Patch pre-req failed, EM Jobs are in running

state. Please stop all jobs and retry", the bug is present.
