    Background and Program Information

With a coastline of 173,000 km., ASEAN has arguably the most abundant and diverse natural marine

resources in the world. The region houses 35% of the world’s mangrove forests and about 30% of

the coral reefs while producing 14% of the world’s marine fish products. These resources are

essential to sustaining the ASEAN economy, particularly to the Coastal Forestry, Fisheries, Marine

Industry, and Coastal Tourism sectors. However, the non-sustainable utilization and exploitation of

marine resources in ASEAN have led to grave environmental degradation. While overfishing anddestructive fishing methods have resulted in coral bleaching and extinction of other marine life,

waste mismanagement and massive tourist developments in coastal areas, beyond existing carrying

capacity, have generated massive amounts of water pollutants.

In order to achieve a sustainable marine environment against the backdrop of social changes and

economic development, the ASEAN highlights the promotion and enhancement of capacity building

in a continuous effort to have sustainable management of ecosystems and natural resources in the

    ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025.

Recognizing the importance of natural resources and its sustainable use as well as acting as a

platform for the dialogue between the ASEAN Member States and the Republic of Korea, the

ASEAN Studies Center of Chulalongkorn University and ASEAN-Korea Centre have invited

ASEAN and Korean students, who are the future leaders of the region to gather at the ASEAN Youth

Exchange Program “ Lingering the Enhancement of ASEAN Community” and ASEAN-Korea Youth

Network Workshop 2016 “ Marine Conservation – Promoting the Sustainable Use of Costal and

Marine Resources” to enhance their understanding on sustainable development of ecosystems and

natural resources as well as forge strong friendship among them. The program will be held between

2nd – 10th August, 2016 that will include lectures, discussions, workshop and site visits in Thailand.

    Objectives of the Program

    1. To further promote awareness on ASEAN and ASEAN-Korea partnership among youth

    2. To enhance active networks and genuine friendship among the ASEAN and Korea youth

    towards a shared future

    3. To promote education on ASEAN both within and outside of the region in various

dimensions, such as political-security, economic, and social-cultural perspectives

    4. To have the participating students understand and get accustomed to teamwork and

    engaging in joint projects

    5. To enhance experiences and knowledge which can be beneficial at the individual,

societal, and international levels in the future
