Abstract: Feeding behaviour of pigeons and doves on sown grain crops was studied on the South African Highveld during 1998–2002. Plots of grains (sunflower, sorghum and maize) were planted on the farm Nooitgedacht near Heidelberg (South Africa) to study the feeding and movement of columbids in these fields. More general studies were also conducted across the Highveld region to determine overall crop damage. Results show that Laughing Streptopelia senegalensis and Red-eyed Doves S. semitorquata as well as Rock Pigeons Columba guinea take seed directly from sunflower and sorghum plants.

This is a first formal recording of this behaviour for Laughing and Red-eyed Doves in South Africa. Columbid populations have changed their movements and feeding methods in recent times to exploit available grain during the first half of the year. Unlike in Zimbabwe and Kenya, Cape Turtle Doves S. capicola were seldom seen feeding on grain seeds in sown lands on the Highveld. Rock Pigeons and Red-eyed Doves prefer soft sunflower seeds (about 31% moist content) relatively early in the season whereas Laughing Doves also consume very dry seeds (about 7% moist content) later in the season. Columbids are capable of inflicting crop damage on the Highveld; however, to get a more reliable indication of the national crop damage more site-specific surveys will be needed. Rock Pigeons are capable of removing the tubular florets from the sunflower heads in order to get access to the soft seeds. However, since these pigeons only remain for 2–3 weeks, they are probably not responsible for the bulk of the crop damage that sunflower incurs in South Africa. Granivorous paserienes and rodents are co-responsible for crop damage in South Africa.

Abstract: This study describes territorial behaviour and habitat utilization of Coqui francolin (Peliperdix coqui) on the farm La Boheme in the Rustenburg district, South Africa. These francolins live an isolated family life in fairly large (at least 2 ha) high-grass savanna territories. Of 123 coveys counted, only four coveys were observed further than 200 m from the 12 territories that were identified over a period of 17 months. This suggests that Coqui francolins are highly sedentary and probably kept local by ecological barriers. Land-use and soil type could account for the fragmented distribution of Coqui francolin in South Africa, as these birds avoid disturbed areas and were only observed on light-coloured sandy soils. The mean annual population density for the 700-ha study area was 4.2 francolins per 100 ha. A higher density of up to 7.0 francolins per 100 ha was observed in optimal habitat. Subadults often occupy marginal habitats during the breeding months, presumably having been evicted from more optimal habitat by breeding birds.

Van Ginkel, C.M. 2002. Telemetric Data Capturing as Management Tool in the Production of a potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) crop on the Springbok Flats, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the reducing of cost and risk by the use of on site data capturing techniques and applied software during the production of a potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) crop. The environmental conditions from planting to harvest were meticulously monitored. Management decisions were based upon continuously measured environmental data transmitted by radio-signal to a computer. Specialized software assisted in the decision-making process (A Decision Support System – DSS). The instruments included a mini-disease station equipped with sensors measuring precipitation, leaf-wetness, temperature, relative humidity and soil moisture. Software included disease modeling for infections caused by the fungi Alternaria solani (Early Blight) and Phytophthora infestans (Late Blight) refined in situ. A Weather forecast based upon environmental data obtained from a satellite assisted regional weather station provided information to predict crop-spraying conditions and adverse environmental conditions like frost up to 5-days in advance. The result was an above average crop with savings on water, energy, labour, chemicals sprayed, fertilizer and mechanization. Environmental advantages included reduced soil compaction, -environmental contamination by chemicals, -air pollution, and -leaching of fertilizers to groundwater. Genetic resistance towards spray chemicals in pathogenic organisms was minimized. This transparent, documented approach and the global drive towards SHE- responsibility (e.g. Global/EurepGap) makes it universally applicable to other crops (especially exports) and a myriad of environmental studies (e.g. euthrophication, habitat alteration etc.). In conclusion it can be stated that the benefits derived from improved management decisions based upon continuous (in situ) data capturing have merit and will contribute positively to the concepts of sustainability and environmental stewardship alike. A Similar approach are being lodged at present to model the Citrus Black Spot (CBS) phytosanitary disease of Export Citrus.
