Notice to Parents
This bulletin contains information about all summer school academic and recreational programs offered by
the Brownsville Independent School District.
All students who participate in a BISD summer school program will be held accountable for their behavior
and are subject to the disciplinary consequences outlined in the 2014 – 2015 BISD Student Code of Conduct
Student-Parent Handbook.
Middle school students who participate in BISD Summer School Programs will not be required to wear the
standardized attire (uniform) designated by their respective campus during the regular school year.
For more information or to register for a program, please contact a campus administrator or counselor.
Security Services are only available during the respective summer school program scheduled times.
Parents are requested to pick up students promptly at the ending time of the respective summer program.

Program Overview: To provide a series of programs for all students who need summer instruction and credit for grade advancement I. Bilingual
A. Bilingual Enrichment Program for current and preregistered identified English Language Learners entering
Kindergarten and 1st grade in the 2015 – 2016 school year
B. Prekindergarten and Kindergarten English Language Learners Currently enrolled:
1. PREKINDERGARTEN: Currently enrolled identified Pre-Kindergarten English Language Learners eligible
for Kindergarten the 2015 – 2016 school year.
2. KINDERGARTEN: Currently enrolled identified Kindergarten English Language Learners eligible for 1st
grade for the 2015 – 2016 school year.
C. Pre-Registered for Kindergarten and 1st grade for the 2015 – 2016 school year and NOT currently enrolled in
BISD
1. PREKINDERGARTEN: Children Identified and Preregistered for Kindergarten as English Language
Learners with parental approved placement into the BISD Bilingual Program for the 2015 – 2016
school year are eligible for summer school.
2. KINDERGARTEN: Children Identified and Preregistered for 1st Grade as English Language Learners with
parental approved placement into the Bilingual program for the 2015 – 2016 school year are eligible
for summer school.
II. Grades 1-5 Summer Program is for district students who failed to be promoted based on District Policy EIE Local.
1. Students must be in grades 1 through 5.
2 Dyslexia students who are deemed eligible by the Section 504 committee. Dyslexia teachers will be
available at each site to work in conjunction with summer school teachers to provide additional
support for eligible dyslexia students.
NOTE: Students who failed to be promoted due to excessive absences are not eligible for this program.
III. Student Success Initiative (SSI) Program is for students who failed to meet the SSI Requirement in grade 5
during the 2014 – 2015 school year. Accelerated instruction will be provided for the third STAAR Administration
in Reading. Priority for summer 2015 are the 5th grade students who did not pass the 2015 STAAR Reading.
SSI preparation classes will begin on Tuesday, June 9th and will end on Friday, June 26th.

Program Overview: To provide a series of programs for all students who need summer instruction and regaining of credit I. Regaining of Credit Program
A. Regaining of Credit Program: Only currently enrolled BISD students who failed course(s) during the
2014 – 2015 school year are eligible to enroll in the Regaining Credit Program.
B. BISD students who failed to meet district promotion criteria are eligible to attend the regaining of
credit program. Students who failed to be promoted due to excessive absences are not eligible for
the program. Regaining of Credit Program will begin on Tuesday, June 9th, and end Thursday, July 2nd.
NOTE: 2014 – 2015 BISD enrolled 8th graders who took Algebra I during the year are eligible to attend
the regaining or EOC test preparation at the designated summer high school site.
C. Course Offerings: Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Reading, ESL I, English SL, Art, Health, and
Technology Applications.
*Dyslexia Students: Dyslexia teachers will be available at each site to work in conjunction with
summer school teachers to provide additional support for eligible dyslexia students.
D. Grading: The district grading procedures require students to pass each of the core subject areas with a
yearly average of 70% and pass electives with a 70% (composite) overall yearly average. If the student
failed an elective during the regular school year, the student will need to select from the summer
school electives offered in order to regain an elective credit.
E. Student Success Initiative (SSI) Program: Eighth grade students who failed to meet the SSI
Requirement (Grade 8 STAAR Reading) during the 2014 – 2015 STAAR administration(s) are eligible to
attend Grade 8 STAAR Reading accelerated instruction classes. SSI preparation classes will begin on
Tuesday, June 9th and end on Friday, June 26th.

Migrant Office, may also regain credits by utilizing the migrant lab available at their designated summer school

Program Overview: To provide all incoming 9th grade district STAMP students with a rigorous two week program in
reading, writing, and mathematics. Relevant activities will focus on science, technology, architecture and medical professions.
Please Note:
The Summer STAMP Camp is a mandatory requirement for all accepted incoming 2015 – 2016 9th grade STAMP students.
STAMP students with three or more absences at STAMP camp will be placed on probation. For any questions, please contact the STAMP office at (956) 574 – 5657.
Transportation: BISD will provide transportation to and from the zoned middle school campus to the assigned summer school site. Program Overview: To provide all incoming 9th grade SPACE Academy students with a rigorous two week program in

Program Overview: High school students who attended BISD schools in 2014 – 2015 may participate in Credit by Exam.
Registration at Home Campus: Students will register for Credit by Exam with their respective high school counselor. No walk-ins are allowed; therefore, all students testing must be pre-registered. Program Overview: The Brownsville Academic Center (BAC) program provides an opportunity for current BAC students
to earn 18 summer days as credit towards their return to their home campus. BAC will also provide a series of programs for all students who need summer instruction and regaining of credit. In addition, a student may continue to earn academic credit through instructional modules.
Eligibility Criteria: Students must be enrolled at BAC at the end of the school year.

Program Overview: Priority status is given to August 2015 potential graduates. Additionally, 7th and 8th grade

Program Overview: Extended School Year (ESY) Program is an individualized instructional program for students
with Disabilities which is provided beyond the regular school year. Students with disabilities
who have difficulty retaining skills during long school holidays and/or summer and who require
a significant amount of time, as per federal and state requirements (34 CFR part 300, TAC chapter
89), to regain previously mastered skills are eligible. BISD Special Education students, in grades
PreK through Grade 12, are eligible to receive extended school year services as determined by an
ARD committee.

Program Overview: These are enrichment summer school programs for currently identified BISD migrant students only. NOTE: If the student did not meet the BISD promotion criteria in grades 1 – 5, the student must attend the summer school program at the assigned summer school site.
NOTE: If a middle school student did not meet the BISD promotion criteria for grades 6, 7, or 8, the student must attend the Regaining of Credit Program at the assigned summer school site.
**Students must register with the academic counselors at their respective high schools. Transportation: BISD will provide transportation to and from the home campus to the assigned summer school sites. The elementary and middle school migrant students may ride the home campus bus to the summer school sites hosting Project SMART on Monday through Friday. Program Overview: Grant program guidelines require that only students who are currently participating in the Texas
21st CCLC, Cycle 7 Program at the following campuses are eligible to participate in the Texas 21st CCLC, Cycles 7 Summer School Program.
Note: As per the Texas 21st Century CCLC grant requirement, transportation will be provided for elementary and middle school students from the designated bus stop to the summer school site in the morning and from the summer school site to the designated bus stop at the end of the session. Pick-up times will be approximately 7:00 am and drop off times will be approximately 12:30 pm.
