Technician Program Sunday, February 9, 2020

Dialysis Technicians comprise a major portion of the workforce in dialysis facilities. They are essential members of the interdisciplinary team who interact closely with patients and other healthcare providers. This program is designed for dialysis technicians and other healthcare providers who participate in providing care for patients on dialysis therapy. Session 1 8:00 Myth Busters: Facts About Dialysis-related Issues and How to Answer Difficult Questions

Do you know if your patients have been presented with all their treatment options after diagnosis with chronic kidney disease? Were their values sought and considered? Have they had the opportunity to ask questions about their life plan? This session will provide an overview of the different treatment options available to the patient with end-stage kidney disease. The presentation will help you understand the difficult decisions patients face when choosing a life plan that might include conservative management, in-center hemodialysis, home dialysis (PD or Home HD), Kidney Transplantation or a combination of these treatments over time. Panel members are patients who lived through these choices and will give you their perspectives how it is like to live with kidney disease on different treatment modalities.

“Turning Down the Churn of PD:” Maintaining Patients on PD Presented in Cooperation with the North American Chapter of ISPD (NAC) Summary: Peritoneal dialysis therapy provides many patients with an independent and flexible method to treat kidney failure in their homes. Many programs have been successful in promoting PD, however, at times, it gets frustrating to initiate many patients on therapy only to be matched by the patients who leave PD. This high turnover in PD programs creates a high “churn” rate that creates a challenge for both patients and their healthcare providers. This education day will focus on teaching participants strategies to “turn down the churn” so PD programs can grow and patients are treated successfully with PD for longer periods of time. Maintaining PD Despite Complications 8:00 NAC Presidential Address – Overview of Turning Down the Churn 8:20 Reducing PD Loss from Infection 8:50 Managing Catheter Dysfunction 9:20 Managing Mechanical Complications of PD 9:50 Discussion 10:00 Break Fluid Management on PD 10:45 Preserving Residual Function/Managing Decline 11:10 Managing Fluid Overload 11:35 PD with Cardiovascular Disease 12:00 Lunch 12:10-1:00 Luncheon Session: Ask the Experts In this session, facilitators will present difficult and usual cases to stimulate an interactive discussion regarding management strategies among the audience and panelists. 1:00-2:00 Posters and Exhibits Quality Improvement Programs 2:00 CQI Theory Applied to PD 2:30 Start Program in Alberta Canada 3:00 Technology – Telehealth and New Cyclers
