21 Reaction Rate Wrap-Up/Last Chance to Balance
34
• What makes these reactions occur again?– Collisions between molecules – (molecules are
bumping into each other and their valence electrons are bonding leading to a chemical reaction)
• And how does this affect the Rate of Reaction?– More collisions = more reactions at a faster rate– Less collisions = less reactions at a slower rate
“Collision Theory”
Increasing the surface area (by breaking something into multiple pieces) increases the reaction rate…HERE’S WHY:
Wrap-Up:• Greater surface area = greater chance for collisions• More collisions = more/faster reactions taking place
Surface Area
Increasing the temperature, increases the reaction rate…HERE’S WHY:
Wrap-Up:• Higher temperature makes particles speed up =
more collisions• More collisions = more/faster reaction taking
place
Temperature
Increasing thepressure, increases the reaction rate…HERE’S WHY:
Wrap-Up:• Particles have less space to move in = more collisions• More collisions = more/faster reactions taking place
Pressure
Increasing the concentration (amount of a substance) increases the reaction rate…HERE’S WHY:
Wrap Up:• Putting MORE of a substance into the same amount
of space = more collisions• More collisions = more/faster reactions taking place
Concentration
Adding a catalyst increase the rate of reaction…HERE’S WHY:
Wrap-Up:• Catalysts act as a “matchmaker” to jump start
a reaction or make it faster• Catalysts are not affected or used during the
reaction
Catalysts
•Does your class data table confirm these results?

Ted Talks – Reaction Rates
• http://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-to-speed-up-chemical-reactions-and-get-a-date
• Answer the final question under Ted Talks – Reaction Rates
Last Chance to Balance
• Balance the 5 equations on the sheet – if you get them correct you will be using the Chromebooks for the remainder of class to complete the “Study Buddy Review”
• If you get them incorrect you will be on the carpet in the front with me practicing how to balance equations.
REVIEW• You can work with a PARTNER, as some games
require 2 players
• Play the review games listed on the sheet given to you and your partner…if you get through all of them ONLY then can you search for alternate CHEMISTRY RELATED sites
EXPECTATIONS• I expect you and your partner to play only
what you are supposed to without being disruptive in any way!!
• When you are working with me you are expected to complete the equations
P + O P₄O₁₀
Equation 1 - Balance Box AnswerEquation 1 - Balance Box Answer
Cl₂ + NaBr NaCl + Br₂
Equation 2 - Balance Box AnswerEquation 2 - Balance Box Answer
Cs + N₂ Cs₃N
Equation 3 - Balance Box AnswerEquation 3 - Balance Box Answer

Balancing Equations Practice Homework
• Find the Balancing Equations Practice Homework or take another sheet – we will work on a few together, and then you can practice on your own.
Lets Practice: Part D - #1
Na + MgF2 NaF + Mg
Lets Practice: Part D - #2
Cl2 + KI KCl + I2
IMPORTANT:Cl = ChlorineK & I are 2 separate elements
Lets Practice: Part D - #3
HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O
Lets Practice: Part D - #4
Na + NaNO3 Na2O + N2
Lets Practice: Part D - #5
PbBr2 + HCl HBr + PbCl2
