Definition of Pain
whatever the person experiencing it says it is, existing whenever the person says it does. (McCaffery, 1999)

* 3 Approaches>> Self-report
# What the child says>> Behavioral
# How the child behaves>> Physiological indicators
# How the child’s body reacts
Pain Assessment: Pain Scales
* Self-report# Old enough to understand# Not overtly distressed# Not cognitively impaired# Child must assess himself/herself
* Behavioral # Preverbal: Infants, Toddlers# Non verbal: Cognitive impaired, Sedated
or Ventilated children# Nurses must assess & rank them.
* If overtly distress: Anxiety, stress# Lessening the child distress (Analgesics,
coping strategies, non-pharmaclogical pain management)
* New pain scales were developed>> Modified from the previous one >> Most pediatric pain scales were
originally developed to measureprocedural-related pain
* Special population>> On ventilator & Non-verbal communicate>> The child’s cognitive level and
communication abilities>> Cognitive impairment: Cerebral palsy,
Autism
