#10 I-495 and Rt. 9:
In November 2013 MassDOT released the final report on the I-495 & Route 9
Interchange Improvement Study. The study recommended several
improvements to address safety and capacity at the I-495/Route 9 and I-495/I-
90 interchanges. MassDOT is working to advance the recommendations along
Route 9 currently valued at $12.5 million. Design and construction funding is
tied to the Transportation Bond Bill currently working its way through the
legislature.

I-495 at I-90 I-495 at Rt. 9
#9 ‘The Bookends’:
Littleton’s I-495 & Route 119
Interchange modifications are currently underway as part of a Public/Private
Development project at the interchange.
A $9.7 million project to resurface Route 119 in Littleton/Groton was recently approved by
MassDOT’s Project Review Committee. This project is not currently programmed on any TIP.
Franklin’s I-495 & Route 140
Between 2003 and 2006, MassDOT reconstructed the I-495/Route 140
interchange at a cost of $16 million.
A $5.0 million project to resurface I-495 in Franklin is under way. The notice to proceed was
issued on 9/27/13. Significant work should begin in the spring.

MassDOT is implementing an All Electronic Tolling system on I-90 ($130 million).
MassDOT is implementing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project on I-495
from Hopkinton to Andover ($6.5 million). The project includes Cameras, Changeable
Message Signs and communication infrastructure.
MassDOT District engineers actively monitor and adjust traffic signal timings along all
major routes including the Route 9 and Route 20 corridors.

Improved Signal Systems and Roadways:
#7 Rt. 20 Corridor:
Several improvement projects along the Rt. 20 Corridor in MetroWest are either in design,
under construction or were completed within the last 10 years.
Route 20, Northborough Town Center
This $4.0 million reconstruction of Route 20 was completed in 2013.
Route 20, Marlborough from I-495 to the Northborough town line
This $4.5 million reconstruction of Route 20 was completed in 2005.
Route 20, Wayland Town Center Improvements
This $1.5 million project was completed in 2007.
Route 20, Northborough/Shrewsbury resurfacing in the vicinity of Route 9
This 2.7 million resurfacing project was completed in 2012.
Route 20, Northborough resurfacing from Tomlin Hill Road to the Marlborough town line
This $3.8 million resurfacing project was advertised in late 2013.
Route 20, Marlborough resurfacing from Main Street to Lincoln Street
This $2.3 million resurfacing project is at the 75% design stage. This project is not currently
programmed on the Boston MPO TIP.

Route 20, Marlborough - intersection improvements at Concord Road This $1.5 million project is at the 25% design stage. This project is not currently programmed on
the Boston MPO TIP.
Route 20, Sudbury - intersection improvements at Landham Rd. This $1.8 million project is at the preliminary design stage. This project is not currently
programmed on the Boston MPO TIP.

#6 Route 9 at Central St. & Oak Hill Road in Southborough:
Improvements to pavement markings, sidewalks and wheelchair ramps at this
intersection will be part of the larger project to resurfacing Route 9 from the
Framingham town line to White Bagley Rd. Project is at the preliminary design stage with and cost estimate of $3.5 million.

#5 Route 9 at Lyman Street in Westborough:
A $5.0 million project to reconstruct the intersection and provide signal
improvements is currently programmed for a 2015 advertisement. The project is at the 25% design stage.

A $10 million project to reconstruct
a section of Route 126 in the vicinity
of Route 135 was advertised for
construction in late 2013. The
project will include adaptive signal
controls.
A major, $100+ million project for
intersection and grade separation
improvements at the Route
126/135/MBTA and CSX railroad
crossing area is in the early
environmental permitting stages.
An ENF will be filed in 2014.

#3 I-495 and I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike):

interchange. Various conceptual alternatives were considered to improve
safety and capacity.

In addition to the modifications that the All
Electronic Tolling System (AETS) will make
to the interchange, a separate project for
the I-495/I-90 interchange is being
proposed to address sub-standard ramps
and geometry.
I-495 at I-90
A project to reconstruct the
interchange is currently in the
preliminary stages of design
and permitting. The current
cost estimate for this project
is $100+ million. Likely
improvements include
modifications to the EB to NB
ramp and SB to WB ramp.
Improvements are also being
considered for the NB to WB
ramp.

#2 Interstate 290 and Interstate 495:
#1 Lack of Public Transportation :
In 2006 Metrowest Regional Transit Authority was created to provide regional
transit services to several Metrowest communities. Service includes several
fixed route buses as well as shuttle services at area train stations and a
hospital.
