Update on Parish Team and Parish Forum In November last, a leaflet was inserted in the Knocklyon News informing readers of the functions of the proposed new Parish Team and Parish Forum. Contained in this leaflet was an invitation to Parishioners, interested in becoming a member of either the Team or the Forum, to nominate them-selves and/or any other person(s) whom they con-sidered suitable and willing. Since then we are pleased to report that nineteen new people have come forward to be part of the new Parish Forum which held its inaugural meeting on Monday 21st January. These men and women have joined the previously existing Parish Council members, to form a Forum group which is very representative of the Parish as a whole in terms of age, experience, skills and geographic distribution. This inaugural meeting, facilitated by Donal Harrington (who chaired the Parish Assembly last October), sought to familiarise newcomers with Parish activities, and the role which the Forum could play in the future development and life of the Parish. It is proposed that the Forum will meet again in one month's time, under the direction of Donal for further familiarisation and planning -after which it will continue to meet at two monthly intervals with its own Chairperson and Secretary.

The nominations received for the Parish Team (i.e. the new Executive Group in the Parish) resulted in the selection of seven people (3 men and 4 women) who will work alongside the priests of the Parish in the day-to-day running of Parish activity. The team members who were introduced to the Forum on 21 st January, will be introduced to the Parish shortly. Ongoing communication between the Team and the Forum will take place, with Team members attend-ing Forum meetings to hear first hand its feedback, receive suggestions and report on activities of the Team as appropriate.

In this New Year, we welcome the establishment of these two necessary groups, and trust that Parishioners will lend their support in their efforts to serve the Parish as effectively and efficiently as possible in a spirit of "humble service".

THE LEGION OF MARY

- AN INVITATION The local Praesidium of this lay apostolate group has been in the Parish for twenty-five years.

Through prayer and home visitation we help and support our fellow Parishioners in their everyday lives. Particular attention is paid to the sick and elderly; by visiting them regularly we give some comfort in their struggles.

Part of our work involves distributing the Miraculous Medal - the protective power of which has been well documented. We also pro-mote the Pioneer Movement amongst school children - one hundred and sixteen children from last year's Confirmation classes in St. Colmcille's took the Pioneer Pledge. We organise a monthly discussion group on the first Wednesday of each month.

If you feel called to this work - please come along any Tuesday evening to the lona Centre or phone Vera at 494 1444.

St. Colmcille's Senior School The many parents and visitors to our school in December commented on our newly purchased Crib. The Crib was formally blessed by Fr. David at a ceremony attended by the youngest representative from each class.

Congratulations to the Sixth Class students who organised a Cake Sale to raise funds for the Crib. In addition to paying for the statues, almost € 8 9 0 (£700) was raised. At this time, the Sixth Classes are dis-cussing and deciding on the charity to which the £700 will be donated. Many thanks to all pupils and parents for their support.

CHRISTMAS DRAMA The school was bustling with excitement before Christmas. There were numerous plays - The Little Angel (see photo, Page 4), Alas In Blunderland, Santa's Grotto, The Grumpy Sheep and Nativity plays per-formed in our school hall. The Third Class pupils gave a beautiful Nativity and Carols performance to the rest of the school in the Church. And the Parents' Association persuaded Santa Claus to pay a flying visit to every class with gifts for all. It was all a great build-up to Christmas.

SCHOOL SNIPPETS • After-school French, German, Art & Craft and informal Gaeilge classes

are in full flow. • There will be a talk given by Brendan Culligan in our school hall on

Thursday 31 January at 7.30 p.m. The talk is entitled 'How Parents Can Help Their Children With Reading, Writing and Spelling'. Failte roimh chach!

• Our hurling and camogie teams are eagerly awaiting the spring weath-er so as to prepare for the forthcoming Cumann na mBunscol compe-titions.

• Basketball, rugby and swimming classes are up and running. A P.E. cir-cuit has been set up in the hall and all of the pupils (and teachers) are back to full fitness after the Christmas season.

• Over £500 was raised for the National Children's Hospital in Crumlin through the sale of the Hospital Pens.

SCHOOL WEBSITE Have you ever visited our school website at www.stcolmcilles.org ? The website is up-to-date with the school calendar, details of forthcoming events, a pupil's zone with children's writing and art displays plus copies of our school newsletters. Well worth a look. "IS THIS THE NEW MIRACLE DIET?" Has your 'Get up qAmo' got up and gone?

Thousands of people in Ireland shared the same problem and now, they have the same solution, thanks to Professor Peskin. His 4 weeks Radiant Health programme, which is based on Medical Research and Scientific Fact, is supported by many doctors and nutritionists and is literally changing people's lives the world over.

It is a sensible, balanced eating plan of carbohy-drates, proteins and fats that provides the essential nutrients but without the hidden sugars.

This is not a meal replacement plan and should also not be confused with many 'faddy' diets available these days.

What makes the programme so popular, is that it allows you to eat whenever hungry, yet it is still guaranteed to help you lose inches and fat with-

in the first 4 weeks.

You don't have to weigh food, count calories/points or rely heavily on willpower or strenuous exercise and you can eat eggs and bacon, as well as juicy steak dinners, cheese, fruit and vegetables.

Many celebrities such as Sam Torrance, Darren Clarke,.Ian Botham and many more are enjoying the benefits of this unique programme.

Support classes are now set up throughout Ireland and they provide a Body Composition Analysis, as well as diet education and menus/recipes.

To find out how you can benefit from this unique programme and attend a support class near you, the Best Of Health are holding presentations in loca-tions throughout Dublin.

The Chairperson of the KCC

recently led a deputat ion to

meet some of the executive of

South Dubl in Co. Counci l .

Present was the Cathaoir leach

Cait Keane, John Lahart ,

Eamon Walsh, Marie Ardagh.

Council lor Stanley Laing and

Sen. Ann Ormond sent their

apologies.

The various topics for discussion included:

Realignment of the Knocklyon Road This project is more than twenty-five years on the

drawing board. The KCC outlined the frustrations of

the various Residents' Associations, with special men-

tion of the concerns of the Lansdowne Residents'

Association. We were assured that Plans would be

drawn up in the year 2002. SDCC will advertise when

this is to take place and all relevant associations will be

asked for their comments concerning the final layout of

the Road and the environs. The Knocklyon Road pro-

ject has moved up the scale of importance and in the

event of the f inances becoming available there will be

no delays.

Signage in Knocklyon The KCC with the very voc i ferous suppor t of

Council lors Lahart and Walsh were very critical of the

lack of road signage for Knocklyon and in Knocklyon.

The KCC presented the Roads Dept. with a number of

requirements for various locations around the area.

We were informed that SDCC are currently engaging

consultants to carry out a Road signage survey both in

Knocklyon and Lucan. We are to be invited back early

this year again, to discuss this topic when the report is

available.

Environmental issues The KCC highlighted the poor condition of Cherryfield

Park. The SDCC see this section of the Dodder Park

as being a natural area whereby various natural f lora

can exist. Whilst we appreciate the work the Council

are doing, we felt the Park was not being used to its full

potential. A number of suggestions were put forward

including the provision of signage outlining the different

flora and wildlife present in the Park. The Parks Dept.

also informed us that tree plant-

ing wou ld c o m m e n c e in

January 2002. There will also

be tree pruning in the Delaford

area later on in the year.

The illegal camping and dumping in Knocklyon

Total costs for the SDCC in

c leaning up of these illegal

e n c a m p m e n t s have been in excess of € 1 . 5 m .

Following a deputation to the Minister for Justice Mr.

John O'Donoghue, the six local authorities have been

instructed by him to come back by February 2002 with

their plans for Transient Parking for these travellers.

This is an issue about which we must keep the pres-

sure on our local representatives, as we do not want a

recurrence of last summer 's problems in the area.

On this issue of refuse collection we would ask resi-

dents to ensure that items taken away are not illegally

dumped. Your support in this matter will be of benefit to

everyone.

We would like at this t ime to ask all Associat ions in

the area to pay their annual subscript ion to the

Communi ty Council. We would also like to ask any new

Body/Group in the area which is not already a member

of the KCC to come along and join us. Do not leave it

until there is a 'crisis'.

On a recent walk in Cherryfield Park we can only

describe the amount of empty beer cans, plastic bags

and general rubbish there as a disgrace. This area is

continually being used for under-age drinking, despite

the fact that drinking in public is an offence. Fines in

excess of € 3 0 0 have been imposed on offenders. The

Gardai have assured us that they will be strictly enforc-

ing this law.

For the Year 2002 can we make the resolution to

'Keep Knocklyon Tidy'.

All the members of the Knocklyon Communi ty

Council thank all the residents of Knocklyon for their

support and wish them all a Happy and Healthy New

Year.

- David Hickey, Chairperson; Kevin Geoghegan, Secretary

New facade of the GAA premises, Knocklyon Road.

Improvements were carried out fol lowing a fire which caused much damage.

Ballyboden St. Endas GAA, Camogie and Ladies Football Club

An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern T.D. will perform the offi-cial opening of the re-instated clubhouse on Friday 25th January 2002. Following the fire of 14th March 2000 which forced the closure of the premises, a recovery programme was put into action immediately, and in May 2001 Tolmac Construction Company went on site. The building has been in full use since the October Bank Holiday weekend 2001 and the general reaction to the refurbished facility has been extremely positive. The Development Committee under Aiden Nevin (Knockcullen), Pat Nash (Templeroan), Eamonn O'Sullivan (Boden Park), Fergus Reid (Mount Alton), Donal Monahan, John Kirwan and Gerry O'Sullivan worked long and hard to finalise the project.

The club would like to thank all members, players and people from the wider community who have been so supportive and patient over the past two years. Already the facility is being extensively used by members and community groups. For further details contact Club Secretary, Conor Doolan, 01-493 1599.

The Senior Camogie and Ladies Football teams who had such a wonderfully successful 2001 are heading for Paris in February to celebrate their achievements. A party of over 90 people will enjoy five days in the French capital. To help with the fund-raising a Race Night is being held in the clubhouse on Thursday 3 1 s t January and an Irish Night has been arranged for Friday 15th February.

Create Your Own Peace The disciple asked his teacher: "To what should I give my greatest attention, to what attach the great-est importance ?" The Master replied without hesita-tion: "To whatever you happen to be doing at the moment".

The best days are seldom the ones when we have little or nothing to do, no problems to deal with, no challenges to meet. More often they are days packed with so much incident that we think at the outset, we'll never cope, and then end up with a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment that takes us by surprise.

Of course, we wouldn' t be surprised if we had a better understanding of our own nature, a better "handle" on life. We, in fact, experience fulfilment, not when our lives are problem-free, but when we deal with our problems well; not when we have no hurdles to jump, but when we do have but manage to clear them! Even our burdens can be carried cheer-fully and our chores done with a light heart as long as we see them as worthwhile.

What we most vitally need is an ability to be truly present to life at every moment of it. If we have that ability we will find that the most routine incidents can be as fulfilling as the so-called high points. To discover this is to become enlightened and so enter a state of life desired by all, sought by many, but only attained by some.

Living in the present is much more than living one day at a time; for even one single day can at times daunt us with its prospect. Living in the present means being aware of each individual moment as we live that moment. It is a stance to life that needs to be understood, cultivated and practised. It spells an end to preoccupation with past happenings and pre-vents us from mentally engaging future events before they occur. It is the most wonderful of all life's skills and will transform the quality of our experience of life once we attain it.

Plan of Passage Grave, Bru na Boinne..

SOLAR MURAL IN CASTLEFIELD! On December 21, the mid-winter solstice, a photogra-pher inside the prehistoric chamber of Bru na Boinne, recorded the scene as the rays of the rising sun shone through the stone-built entrance passage. Ancestors of ours must have witnessed the same dramatic scene thousands of years ago. This phenomenon is due to the imaginative design, the skillful construction of the passage tomb, keen observance of the solar system and the accurate orientation of the ancient structure.

As we celebrated the Millennium the M50 Motorway through Knocklyon was under construction. It was

accurately set out with the aid of modern surveying equipment. The photograph published here shows the zigzag shadow cast by the houses in Castlefield Grove on the ribbed concrete boundary wall of the M50 Motorway on a December afternoon. In the years to come residents can watch out for the annual reap-pearance of the solar produced pattern.

The two phenomena mentioned here, one in Meath and the other in Dublin, depend on local weather con-ditions, as does their clarity.

DOES GOD KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHILD?

DOES YOUR CHILD KNOW ABOUT GOD?

Hilary Musgrave, a former teacher and school principal, has worked in the area of children's spirituality for many years. She has widespread experience of work-ing with parents in spiritual formation.

In a world of constant change and diversity, where people are searching for meaning, pur-pose and a sense of belonging in their lives -how can we help to shape and form children on their spiritual journey? Hilary Musgrave will address this subject showing that the greatest gift a parent can give their child is a spirituality that will help them to value themselves, others and their world, and find within them the spirit that will enable them to cope with life's ups and downs, struggles and joys.

WHAT IS A PIONEER? All of our young people, as they prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, are introduced to the concept of taking the 6Pledge9 - a solemn promise to abstain from the use of alcohol and drugs for a specified period of time chosen by themselves. For many who take the pledge, 18 would seem to be the age of choice to start drinking, while others have chosen to postpone that decision until age 21. How many of their number go on to pledge total abstinence through the Pioneer movement is not clear, but undoubtedly there are some. In the account that follows one Parishioner describes her encounter with one such young girl.

On the Feast of the Epiphany or Nollaig na mBan, as I attended Mass I was reminded of a young girl I met a few months ago. Fr. Galvin, the most recent Carmelite to minister in our Parish, said in his homily that we could all be stars, shining lights. He made the point that teenagers could be very bright lights. This brought me back to last Autumn when I attended a social function. As I do not like to stand for very long I sought out a place to sit and watch the goings-on around me. After a short while a young girl came and sat beside me. She said, "I see you are a Pioneer," and before I had time to com-ment, she added, "and so am I." She told me that she had just become a junior member and enquired how long ago it was since I joined. All of fifty-four years ago, I told her. We chatted about the badges, the certificate of membership and Fr. Sean McCarron, S.J., who was Director when I joined. It was the young girl who then said, "It is the way we can help people, whom we have never met, to overcome their addiction to alcohol by our

prayers that appeals to me." In over half a century she was the first person to men-tion to me the spiritual side of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association.

When Fr. Cullen, S.J., invited four women to the presbytery in Gardiner Street on the 28th December 1898, over-indulgence in alcohol was a huge social problem. Over one hundred years later it still is the most serious drug addiction. Fr.

Cullen had made several attempts to start a temperance movement but failed. He had

been targeting males with a drink problem. He would inveigle them to take the pledge on a

Monday but by the following Friday most of them had returned to their old habit! In 1898 he decided to

enlist the help of four women - Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Bury, Mrs. Egan and Miss Power - who were already veteran total abstainers. At first he confined membership to women as he felt that they would be more steadfast in their adherence to the rules of the new association than men. It was later when a group of men in Cork approached him that both sexes were admitted.

The Association is not a club for spoilsports, killjoys or narrow-minded anti-alcohol people. It is founded on love. Love of the Sacred Heart, love of one's neighbour, especially those addicted to alcohol. Fr. Raymond Moloney, S.J., in his booklet, 'Pioneer Spirituality', says, "Our concern for other people in our Pioneer promise exists on two levels. The first and most fundamental one is a profound spiritual vision of the way we belong to other people and are involved with them and they with us. The second level is a practical one, namely the prac-tical implementation of this vision in helping other peo-ple."

Pioneers pray daily, "Sacred Heart of Jesus, for Thy sake, to give good example, to practice self denial, to make reparation for the sins of intemperance and for the conversion of excessive drinkers I will abstain for life from all alcoholic drink."

Before I left the gathering back in the Autumn my young friend brought along another girl to meet me. She had also become a Pioneer. These two teenage shining lights were an inspiration to me. May they persevere in their commitment.

KNOCKLYON UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB Since the previous edition of the Knocklyon News there has been little football to report on, as the football season closed down for the Christmas break. The season is due to begin again on the weekend of the 26th January and I am sure that all the players and managers are eager to get back. However, the committees for Knocklyon United have been busy, and I outline briefly the current activities of the club.

DEVELOPMENT DRAW As many of the residents of Knocklyon are aware, the committee members and managers have been busy calling to your doors looking for support for our month-ly draw. So far we have covered more than half of the Knocklyon area, and we are thrilled with the response. It is only by gaining the support of Knocklyon residents that the club can achieve its ambitions. The success of the monthly draw has enabled us to apply for Lotto funding under the Sports Capital programme. The first stage of our plans will be to erect a pavilion at Delaford Park, to cater for the younger players aged from 6 to 11. We have received tremendous support from all groups ranging from politicians, local schools, football associations, charity organisations and the community of Knocklyon. We would like to thank all who support-ed us and especially those who supported our month-ly draw.

COACHING Our coaching course took place on the weekend of 12th January at St. Colmcille's Community School. Most of our managers participated and this can only benefit managers and players. The FAI was represent-ed and was involved in coaching the managers. I would like to thank Brian Millar and Harry Wall who organised this event. We would also like to thank the Principal Mr John McKennedy for the use of the school, and for his continued support of the club.

UPCOMING EVENTS 1. RACE NIGHT A race night is due to take place on Thursday 7th March, at Mortons, Firhouse Inn, and we again look for yoursupport. Further details will be available in the next edition of the Knocklyon News. 2. TRIP TO BELGIUM/HOLLAND Again the club plans to travel at Easter to allow our

players to play in tournaments against teams from all over Europe. It is anticipated that 8 teams/181 people will travel and the club eagerly looks forward to our annual trip. A lot of hard work has been done by the sub-committee, and Mary Young and Jennie Kennedy deserve a special word of thanks for their

efforts. More details to follow in the next edition. 3. SPECIAL LEAGUE As some of you may be aware the club planned to organise a mini world cup tournament for boys and girls from Knocklyon United and players from the Downs Syndrome Association. Unfortunately there were not enough numbers from the Downs Syndrome Association to organise the event. However, we have again been in contact with Mr Ruairi O'Connor from the Downs Syndrome Association and we are both eager to run some type of tournament in either May or July depending on the response. If anybody is interested in participating or knows anybody who may be interested in playing or helping out, please contact me at the details below. It would be great to organise some type of event in the Knocklyon area.

Finally, results for the November and December development draw are listed below together with the winners of our Christmas draw which took place in Morton's pub on the 20th December. Thanks again for the con-tinued support.

^ ^ we focus this month on cannabis. We would sug-gest you cut out this information, as it will afford you an oppor-tunity to learn more about drugs. - Breda Fitzharris What is it? This comes in the form of dried leaves from the plant, or resin, which is usually smoked in a cigarette called a joint or splif. It is also eaten on its own, or taken in cakes or tea. Cannabis is one of the most commonly used of all illegal drugs. The Highs Users experience feelings of relaxation and euphoria, and become more receptive and sociable towards those around them. Some have said it helps them to concen-trate on boring tasks. However there is also evidence to sug-gest that this may not be the case. It also tends to increase the appetite of users. The Lows Some users report reactions of tearfulness, confu-sion and anxiety. Long term use has been linked to memory loss, paranoia, and lethargy.
