minister at Church of the Nativity in Leawood, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City. Also included on Associates and Sisters Day will be a chance for associates and sisters to discuss ways to improve the Ursuline Associate program. Sister Sharon Sullivan, congregational leader, will be in attendance to join in that conversation. Any topic is open for discussion, but associate groups have been asked to consider the following questions concerning lifetime commitments during their meetings this past year to prepare for a discussion June 14: Should becoming a lifetime associate involve a greater expectation than those making their initial commitment? If so, what should that be? Is there a need for two commitments? Is it acceptable if an associate makes an initial commitment, but chooses not to make a lifetime commitment? T he topic for Associates and Sisters Day this June 14 is “Jesus, Lover of Us All,” with Ursuline Sister Kathleen Condry serving as the main speaker. Sister Kathleen will be adapting her talk from the recent book, “Lover of Us All,” by Ursuline Sister of Louisville Martha Buser. Many associates are likely familiar with Sister Martha’s first book about Saint Angela Merici, “Also in Your Midst.” In this latest book, published in 2012, Sister Martha studied the paperwork used for Saint Angela’s canonization in 1807. She devotes one chapter of her book to the three qualities cited as exceptional for Saint Angela: strength of character, spirit of penance and reputation for sanctity. In the following chapter, the book lists her virtues to live by: wisdom, prophecy and discernment of spirits. Sister Kathleen will weave these topics into her talk in the morning, and in the afternoon, a panel of associates and sisters will talk about someone they know with a great strength of character and who it was that modeled character for them. This may be the first chance that many associates will have to listen to Sister Kathleen, who has ministered solely in Kansas during her 44 years as an Ursuline Sister. She is an excellent speaker and has a storied career as an educator, serving as a French teacher, principal or president of several schools and as assistant superintendent for leadership and mission in the archdiocesan schools. She was elected to the Ursuline Sisters of Paola leadership for 22 years, including as superior from 2002 until the merger with Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, I have a little hoya plant. It was green and healthy when I bought it from the flower booth at Mount Saint Joseph’s Picnic. It sat in my window for two years. I watered it, I dusted it, I gave it plenty of sunshine – yet it never grew. Three weeks ago I fed it some fertilizer—what a difference that made! Now it’s growing and thriving. All it needed was a bit of nourishment. Just like my little plant, I must be fed, and I need to remember Jesus will feed me with his kindness and forgiveness. Our Ursuline Associate experience gives us many ways to be fed and to share our nourishment with each other. The daily Internet prayer request network is a good place to start. Another is Associates and Sisters Day. We renew our commitments to the sisters and to each other and we welcome our newest associate members. Make plans now to join us on June 14. You’ll find the registration form on the back page of this newsletter, or you may register online. May you be nourished every day with the inspiration of Angela Merici!

Dear Friends, I just reflected again with Sister Martha Buser’s book, Lover of Us All, and could only imagine the marvelous range of insights and experiences that will be shared this summer at Associates and Sisters Day. This will be my first time in several years that I will be able to attend, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to share with you a day of exploration and reflection with Saint Angela. Sister Martha posed the question, “Why does Angela’s charism speak to those (of us) born in a time of unrest and questioning?” She then mentions in her reflections many facets of Angela and her charism; some of these include:• that Angela allowed God to do God’s work,• that she was committed – when facing a dilemma – to finding

another way,• that Angela was a reconciler who saw each one as God sees, and• that the vitality of her company was a miracle all its own. These facets are the flowering of Angela’s charism, reaching out to us as do the greening and flowering of long-awaited springs. Perhaps these Angela blooms drew you to the Associate program. Perhaps they are the same that compel us to come together year after year as the flowering dogwoods and redbuds arrest our eyes each Easter. And these are but some of the teachings and examples of Angela that fuel our service and ministry. I like to think that our service might be like the daffodils and jonquils, taking root wherever they are planted and persisting until they blanket the hillside. As we reflect with this Update in anticipation of our June day together (which is “Flag Day,” Saturday, June 14 – I just remembered, an iris is also known as a “flag lily!”), let us each discover and prepare our own Angela spiritual bouquet to share with one another. Blessings for an Easter season that is rich with the blossoms of a verdant springtime. In Angela,

Those of us who know Brenda Semar can honestly say they’ve never met someone with a bigger heart. If you add in her husband John, together Brenda and John form an awesome team who make a difference every day.

Brenda and John both had successful careers in Louisville. When they retired they made their home on the lake in Grayson County. Brenda is a firm believer in family. When Brenda’s father became ill, Brenda and John brought him into their home and provided around-the-clock care. Brenda and John currently share their home with Brenda’s mom. Brenda and John were not blessed with children of their own, but have helped bring the Holy Spirit to countless children through the sacrament of confirmation. Brenda and John have conducted confirmation classes at St. Augustine Church for at least five years. Brenda was

TEAmwOrK AT ITS fINEST!also instrumental in the baptism of her great niece and nephew. Brenda is one of two coordinators for the Grayson County Associate group. That group is involved with much outreach in the Leitchfield community. Brenda is also very involved with the Mount Saint Joseph Picnic, spending many weeks at the Mount creating beautiful silent auction baskets. Brenda and John also work tirelessly picnic day. What many might not know about Brenda and John is their love of all God’s creatures. Any animal that comes to their door doesn’t leave hungry. Numerous cats and kittens have been cared for, fed, provided with their shots and even had their neutering paid for so they can be adopted out to good homes. Saint Francis loves Brenda and John. Brenda is a lector at St. Augustine; she helps decorate the church for special occasions and prepares meals for families coping with the funeral of a loved one. Brenda and John even volunteer their services to clean the church. If there is a need, Brenda and John are there. Brenda is a beautiful person who loves God, family, friends, Mount Saint Joseph and Peddler’s Mall!

Teamwork and togetherness...Dear Associates, Many of you have Facebook accounts and keep up with all your friends. As I was reading through my account, there was one saying that reminded me of being a part of community. It said that an anthropologist proposed a game to some children of an African tribe. He put a basket of beautiful fruit near a tree and told the children that the first one to reach the fruit would win the whole basket. When he told them to run, they all took each

other’s hands and ran together. They then sat together enjoying the fruit. When asked why they ran together, they replied, “Ubuntu.” Ubuntu is a philosophy of some African tribes that can be summed up as “I am because we are.” Saint Angela gave us the same idea when she used the word ‘Insieme’ so many times in her writings. Insieme means “together.” It is together that we are one community as Ursuline Sisters and Associates. We pray together and work together for the good of the whole. Each one of us is important but together we can change the world.Have a wonderful spring and summer.Sister Amelia Stenger, Director of Development, Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph

As you read this reflection we will be celebrating the Easter season but as I am writing it, we are still in

the second week of Lent. Hopefully you are experiencing sunshine, warm temperatures and blooming flowers. As I am writing, winter still has a firm grip and is having a hard time moving out to let spring come in. Lent is a word that is often translated as spring. So I expect to see, along with the ashes, signs of spring on Ash Wednesday. One day recently I did see a little crocus blooming in my cousin’s yard and it gave me hope. Lent is more than spring, however, as we who are Christian know. The goal of Lent is closely associated with the goal of Baptism – New Life in God. A question we each might ask ourselves: What did I do to increase the life of God within me and how will I continue the growth during this Easter season? For starters, we might look at our prayer life. How intimate with God are we as we pray? How much of our time in prayer is spent in praise? Is our prayer time spent mostly in asking? Do you ever just sit and listen to God in prayer? On Easter Sunday morning did you come forth from the Lenten tomb with new life? What will you do to increase that new life and keep it fresh? Will this springtime and Easter season bring renewal to your heart even as it brings renewal and new life to the earth? Like Mary Magdalene and the other women who rose early to visit the tomb and were surprised to find it empty, will you look until you find Jesus? Hosea 2:16 is the beautiful passage: “I will allure you; I will lead you into the desert and speak to your heart” and in 2:21: “I will espouse you to me forever; I will espouse you in right and in justice, I will espouse you in love and in

mercy; I will espouse you in fidelity and you will know the Lord.” With those words, God is inviting each of us into a love relationship. How do you respond? Did the desert time of Lent lead you to the fullness of new life on Easter and into a deeper love relationship with God? The Easter season of new life is a good time to reflect on our relationships with others. How do I treat the closest members of my family? Do I take them for granted or do I give them quality time? How do I treat the people in my neighborhood? Are there shut-ins who need a visit or a warm meal? Is there a homeless shelter in my town whose residents need my gifts, especially the gift of companionship? Saint Basil the Great said, “The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry, the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor.” Can I be detached enough to let go of those things that rightfully belong to someone else and make room for Easter’s new life? And while we are decluttering our closets and household, we might want to look at our interior closets. What do we see there that needs to go? What bad habits could I let go and be healthier for doing so? What about my thoughts? Do I need to let go of criticism and judgment and replace them with praise and gratitude? Maybe this Easter season is a good time to memorize some scripture verses or lines of poetry that we could repeat when we notice thoughts creeping in that are not healthy. Lent and Easter can transform our life if we allow it. Are you listening to your baptismal call to new life? Can you embrace resurrection during this Easter season?

EDNA WILHELM MARNELL, 87, died April 2 in Durant, Okla. A registered nurse, musician and active member of St. Anthony’s Parish, she served “from time to time” as lector, song leader or organist. She had worked at the National Farmers Organization office, was a 4-H

leader and past member of the North Hereford Extension Club. She liked to sew, have family gatherings and watch the Lawrence Welk Show. Edna was the second of five children and a descendant of one of the pioneer Kentucky families who homesteaded in northwest New Mexico. Born April 27, 1927 in Waterflow, N.M., she grew up in Hereford, Texas, where she met and married her husband F.A. “Speck” Marnell. They were married 49 years and raised five children, Associate Joan Minks, Dorothy Marnell, David Marnell, Chris Hartley and Tom Marnell. In addition to her children, Edna is survived by her sisters, Sister Fran Wilhelm and Lee Andriakos. She valued being an associate of the Ursulines and wrote often of being inspired especially by her aunts, Sisters Ancilla Marie and Mary Edgar Warren (deceased), and her sister, Fran. Edna made her lifetime associate commitment in January 1988, but never received a lifetime associate pin. Sister Marietta Wethington, her contact companion, arranged a special recommitment ceremony during a 2005 visit to Mount Saint Joseph and presented Edna with her very own lifetime associate pin.
