Short summary of theTrustees’ October meeting

We confirmed that thefeedback that we’dreceived aboutShallowford House, the locationof this summer’s Somera Festivalo,was unanimously good, and sothe search for an alternative tothe recently closed WedgwoodMemorial College as site of ourregular events has ended. We aredelighted to confirm, therefore,that Course-You-Can andDrondo 11 will emanate fromShallowford from 22 to 24February 2013, and the SummerFestival from 12 to 16 August.Drondo 12, likely to take placein November, may be in analternative location, following asuccessful Drondo at the Adelphiin Liverpool.

Three-day university seminarEd Robertson reported onpositive progress with the Uni-versity of Liverpool. Work isunder way to host a three-dayseminar there in March, financedby the bequest left by JohnBuchanan and ideally accreditedas continuous learning (see page5). Along similar lines, EABwould like to offer the possibilityto people of undertaking examsin Esperanto, recognised underthe Common European Frame-work of Reference. In order toencourage participation, wedecided that EAB would offersubsidies to members (andmembers of JEB) who wouldlike to take the written andoral components of the examina-tions.

New web addresslearn.esperanto.org.ukIn our publicity we have oftendirected people to the websiterun by the independent, cross-national team of Lernu.net. Theyspecialise in providing courses,tutors and an online communityfor people learning Esperanto,which are services crucial in themodern day but which we can’tprovide ourselves. In recognitionof Lernu’s contributions we haveapproached them with an offerto donate £1,000 per year, whichthey have accepted.

The web address learn.esperanto.org.uk now leadsdirectly to their site, so if any ofyou are asked about how to learnEsperanto the response shouldnow roll off the tongue and beeasy to remember, which wasn’tthe case in radio interviews whenwe would have to answer “lernu-dot-net, which means ‘learn’ inEsperanto and is spelt l-e-r-n-u-dot-net”. Having already usedthe new address at the LanguageShow in London, we’ll make useof it again at Language World inMarch, taking place in Notting-ham.

“Default” gift!Complementing the defaultlocation for sending beginners isa default gift for dignitaries; PaulGubbins’s Star in a Night Sky.Congratulations to Paul on asterling piece of work (see page9). We co-promoted the book bycreating its own websitestarinanightsky.eu to lend it an

air of prestige. We feel that this isan approach that we will use infuture for other extraordinaryproducts.

On the subject of websites,Edmund informed us that thewebsite which features ClaudePiron’s works in downloadableform http://rano.org/piron/ hasgenerated a fair bit of interest,and so next on his agenda isadding a second-edition copy ofLa bona lingvo to the site.

New financial examinerOf course, our discussions aren’texclusively about projects butalso about the day-to-day opera-tions, and so Clare confirmedthat Dains LLP are now ap-pointed as our independentexaminers, saving us a consider-able sum on the prices chargedby the previous firm, who wroteus a letter to apologise for theproblems caused during thisyear’s exam and volunteering tous that the member of staffresponsible no longer workedthere.

We’ve moved some of EAB’smoney about: £100k previouslyinvested with Harpenden hasbeen moved to a 7-day accessaccount with Scottish Widowsreturning 1.85%, which is thebest rate available for easilyaccessible money in the currentclimate. £106k which was held asa cash deposit with CCLA (earn-ing 0.95%) has been moved toCCLA’s ethical investment fund.CCLA have declared a willing-ness to send an advisor to meetwith us, so we will invite one toattend our February meeting inLondon.

four during the year – in Londonon a Saturday afternoon inFebruary; a short one followingthe AGM; a working weekend inJune; and a Skype meeting inOctober. We would be happy tosee more faces present at them,so please do give some thoughtto joining us as a Trustee. Thecurrent incarnation of the Man-agement Committee is a youngone, with five of the sevenTrustees having joined it in 2009or later, so there’s no need to feelapprehensive about being new tothe role. If you think you mightbe interested but would like tolearn more about what’s in-volved before you commit tosubmitting a nomination, feelfree to talk to any of us.

Two types of EABsupporter subscriptionOn a final note, I should remindyou that the AGM voted to createtwo tiers of ‘supporter’ category,since the cost of printing andposting EAB Update to supporterswas more than the paymentrequired to become one. Sup-porters who pay £10 a year willnow receive an electronic versionof EAB Update; the printedversion will be sent to supporterswho pay £15 per year, meaningthat the Association is no longerin the curious position of sup-porting the supporters. This newpricing system came into effecton 1 January.

Shallowford House in Staffordshire plays host to the firstEAB events of 2013 from Friday,22 to Sunday, 24 February.

Course-You-CanCourse-You-Can (CYC) is aweekend course for people whoare new to Esperanto, providingthem with their first opportunityto dip their toe into Esperantowaters in a low-pressure environ-ment with fellow learners. Underthe watchful eyes of MalcolmJones, participants will spendtheir sessions learning how toread, write, and speak in Espe-ranto. Lorna Flanagan, whoattended CYC in 2009, wrote –in perfect Esperanto, we shouldadd – that “there was chit-chat,camaraderie, tasty meals and

entertainment, such as languagegames.”

Malcolm customarily mixesfun engagements, such as plays,with more serious, helpfulactivities, such as explainingthings like the correlatives, thoseelements of the language thatsoon become second-nature butwhich may seem daunting atfirst.

TogetherExperienced speakers will also beon hand because two otherevents are happening at the sametime. Lorna reported that hergroup was pleased that Malcolmspoke clearly and slowly, andthat the advanced speakers whowere participating in the Drondoalso took their time when the

two groups met during thevarious breaks. David Fuller, whoparticipated in 2010’s CYC,wrote:

“I feel [Malcolm’s] method inhelping us mere beginners wasvery good. His helpfulness inand out of class put us at easethroughout the weekend inBarlaston. It was intensive, whichwas good. This is the way I’dprefer it.”

Stress-free learningI would heartily recommend tobeginners and post-beginners, aswould former students such asLorna and David, that they take achance and come to ShallowfordHouse for the weekend. Whatbetter, stress-free way could therebe to follow up learning thelanguage than by meeting otherbeginners in beautiful country-side with good company andexcellent food? Drondo No. 11Taking place at the same time,though in this instance forexperienced speakers, is theDrondo – a series of discussionson various themes, but the catchis that everything is in Esperanto.Past themes have ranged fromcurrent affairs (Savile and theTwitchfork Trials) to the light(humorous examples of misun-derstanding), via personalviewpoints (whether the role ofthe USA in the world is good orbad).

People with strong opinionsare particularly welcome, sincethe beauty of the Drondo is that,when open debate spawns, allparticipants get a chance to reallystretch their Esperanto. TheDrondo might seem like a big

Make a note in your diaries to explore Esperanto in Liverpoolbetween 20 and 22 March.The University of Liverpool will host the three-day event

comprising seminars in linguistics, literature and the languageitself. Professor Wim Jansen, from the University of Amsterdam,will lead the linguistics seminars.

The event is structured so that participants will be able toswitch between the linguistics and literature strands, which will beconducted in English to target Liverpool university students andothers wanting to take their first steps in discovering Esperantolanguage and culture.

The Esperanto seminar will suit those learning via the internetor postal courses who wish to hear and speak the language withothers at their level.

The event is supported by the John Buchanan bequest andcosts, including accommodation, will be kept to a minimum.

A detailed programme, as well as costs, will be available in thenew year. Anyone interested in attending should contact theEsperanto centre in Barlaston to receive further information.

Three-day event in Liverpoolstep for people who have notreally engaged in much spokenEsperanto before, but we aim tobe welcoming and patient,providing people with the meansto improve their speaking abilityin the language.

“Any Questions in Esperanto”Michael Heary, who had previ-ously only attended one Espe-ranto event, wrote of October2010’s Drondo:

“As a relatively new Esperan-tist, I must admit I found someof the topics a bit daunting, andthe language level was very high.It was a bit like listening to AnyQuestions on Radio 4, but inEsperanto! But it was greatpractice in comprehension, and Ilearned a lot at both the sessionsand during the meal breaks.”

Ni Muzikumu!Last but not least, Jack Warrenwill be hosting Ni Muzikumu!(please see the inset below). NiMuzikumu provides a commonlocation so that you can meet upwith some of your other Espe-ranto friends to form musicgroups and put on performancesfor others.

Jack offers a lot of flexibility,meaning that there is scope forparticipants to take part in any

Drondo sessions which take theirfancy too.

If you and a friend havethought about playing togetherbut haven’t had the opportunityto do so, then why not takeadvantage to do exactly thatwhilst eating well, dropping intoa Drondo session, going onwalks through the grounds, andimmersing yourself in Esperanto

EAB subsidyCourse-You-Can, Drondo and NiMuzikumu! run from the eveningmeal on Friday until lunch onthe Sunday. CYC is subsidised byEAB and so will cost £140;Drondo and Ni Muzikumu! areset at £155. Considering that thiscovers six meals, several breaksfor hot drinks with biscuits orcake, and two nights’ accommo-dation amidst the beautifulsurroundings of ShallowfordHouse, I hope that you too seethis as excellent value for money.

Somera Festivalo datesSummer might feel a long-forgotten memory but planningfor the Somera Festivalo, our five-day event, is under way. It will betaking place at ShallowfordHouse from 12 to 16 August.More details will follow nearerthe time.

Join us at Ni Muzikumu!For the past two years musicians have gathered at Barlaston for aweekend workshop centred around providing Esperanto lyrics forvarious kinds of song. These have varied widely, including folk-song, musicals and popular tunes from present and past. On eachoccasion we have managed to showcase our talents at a short pre-lunch concert on the Sunday, attended by participants at otherevents who always form an appreciative audience.

Writing song lyrics in Esperanto is a challenging but compel-ling task, and Ni Muzikumu provides a rare opportunity to shareideas on the topic and to perform with others. Next year we shallbe at Shallowford, from Friday, 22 to Sunday, 24 February. Whynot join us? All are welcome; you do not need to be a singer or amusician to take part.

I’ll come straight out with it.Linguists are not my favouritepeople. At one extreme there arethose who are obsessed withtheorizing and at the other endof the scale there are those whocollect languages like somepeople collect stamps. Is it reallya proper occupation for a grown-up person to devote so muchtime to learning how to say thesame thing in a dozen languages?

However, in whatever flavourthey come this group is vital forEsperanto. We need to have themon our side, for several reasons.

To begin with, it is quite clear,if you follow what is happening

in the Forums at Lernu.net – over100,000 registrants from 240countries and territories, I amtold – that a high percentage ofthose currently learning Espe-ranto are not doing it out of anyhigh-minded principle. You canforget about any guff about theinterna ideo or ‘internationalcommunication without dis-c r iminat ion’ .

It is clear that the overwhelm-ing motivation is a fascination

with the language, and not somemoral imperative. The fina venkoor whatever practical applicationof Esperanto might lie in thefuture is largely irrelevant. Ofcourse, there will be somedevoted to the cause, but theyaren’t a significant proportion ofthe new learners, who in asubstantial majority are actuallinguists, or of such a bent.

The future of Esperanto lies inthe number of speakers.

The conclusion is obvious.Promoting Esperanto alongtraditional lines is not going tomake much difference to thenumber of speakers. The message

has to be reformulated to make itmost attractive to the group thatthe facts show are actuallyprepared to put in the effort andtime involved in learning.

By the way, I think it is timewe dropped all the simple-minded propaganda aboutEsperanto being easy – learn tobe fluent in months and so on.

The facts are that in the initialphase of learning Esperanto isnot just 10 or 5 times easier to

learn than a national language. Itis many orders of magnitudeeasier. The new student can learnto form the past, present andfuture of any verb (and for allsubjects) in less than 60 seconds,and to boot can grasp the princi-ple that they can make anythinginto a verb provided it makessense.

That might be reasonablydescribed as several thousand timeseasier in comparison to a lan-guage like French. The samecould be said of learning to spellcorrectly in Esperanto in com-parison to achieving that goal inEnglish.

However, the further youprogress into Esperanto, themore the gap narrows betweenEsperanto and the nationallanguages. At the highest level,there is a special difficulty andthat is that there aren’t the TVprogrammes, the films, thenewspapers and the availability offluent speakers, from which thelanguage can just be absorbed.

If you have doubts about thevalidity of this analysis, you haveonly to attend an EsperantoCongress and pay attention tothe level of sophistication andverve in the conversation amongthe majority of the attendees. Inany case, what else would youexpect from people who speakthe language and are exposed toit just a few weeks in the year?

However, when Esperanto iscommonly in daily use for all themedia purposes of the modernworld, then you will be able tosay without fear of contradictionthat Esperanto is the easiestlanguage on the planet, whilst atthe same time being one of themost sophisticated.

So we need numbers. Thelanguage lovers are those show-ing most willingness to learn.Therefore target our message forthis group.

But there is a further compel-ling reason to get the linguists onboard. When it comes to a

decision as to whether to intro-duce Esperanto into the educa-tional system, or to have itofficially adopted for certainpurposes in the European Union,it is not unlikely, that somequalified linguist is going to beconsulted. Almost certainly anypolitical opponent of such adevelopment is going to call onsupport from some ‘expertwitness’ – i.e. some linguist whodoesn’t believe in Esperanto. Wecan pre-empt this by favourablyshaping in advance the opinionof as many language specialistsas we can get our hands on.

From these two considera-tions alone, it seems to me EABmust have a presence each year atthe London Language Show (thelargest such event in Europe).

The importance of thisaudience for the future of Espe-ranto also has, I think, theimplication that not only shouldEAB’s stand be well manned butthat also a considerable effort beinvested in presenting Esperantoin way that is most engaging tothis audience. A guide book, at

least, as to the arguments to bepursued should be developed. Ido not think that chatting aboutpeace and international under-standing is the way to maximallyinfluence this vital group.

Again, in the matter of thetaster lesson – congratulations tothose who got this into theofficial programme – it seems tome the opportunity should beseized not so much to copy thestyle of the taster lessons for theother languages but to get acrossexactly how Esperanto is distin-

guished from the other languages– by its particular featuresdesigned to let the learner get tothe interesting bits well inadvance of a fellow studentlearning a national language. Infact, it would be highly desirableto have a standard taster lessonprepared along these lines thatcould be used by anybodywanting to put on a lecture aboutEsperanto.

Well done EAB for being atthe Language Show. Let next yearbe even more effective.

If anyone feels inclined toargue that it isn’t worth the costof being there, I am prompted toreply that we may only haveanother 25 years to secureEsperanto’s position in theworld. When the hand-heldmachine translator is readilyavailable, perhaps in the form ofan app on the future equivalentof today’s smart-phone, youmight query why you shouldlearn, or your son or daughter betaught, Esperanto.

It would be good to thinkthat when this advance in tech-nology comes to pass, there willbe plenty of language teachersaround prepared to say: ‘becauseit’s good for you and interesting.’

During the past couple ofyears you may have heardthe term KER-Ekzamenoj men-tioned in Esperanto websites andpublications. So what are theseexams then? KER stands forKomuna Eüropa Referenckadro, orin English ‘Common EuropeanFramework of Reference’. Thisrefers to a scale of relative profi-ciency in mastering a language,sponsored by the Council ofEurope, intended to be commonacross Europe, and which isincreasingly also used elsewhere.

The framework, or scale,consists of six levels of attain-ment: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.These levels describe knowledgeand capabilities ranging frombeginner (A1), up to those thatmight be expected from a nativeor near-native speaker (C2), andare also a standard which can beused to gauge competence thatmight be expected from examina-tion candidates, and knowledgecovered in corresponding levelsof courses.

What does this mean?What does this mean for speakersand learners of Esperanto? Arecent development is thatinternationally recognisedversions of CEFR examinationsare now available for Esperantoat levels B1, B2 and C1, of whichthe B2 and C1 exams are the

most popular. These are vali-dated by the Hungarian state-accredited Foreign LanguageExamination Centre (ITK inHungarian), part of Budapest’sEötvös Loránd University. InHungary, thousands of candi-dates are tested each year in a‘bilingual’ (i.e. Hungarian/Esperanto) version of the Espe-ranto exams, but now Esperanto-speakers anywhere else can takean Esperanto/Esperanto versionof the exams for the same pres-tigious qualification.

Double diploma!Up until recently, the onlyqualification available in Britainhas been the Esperanto Associa-tion of Britain Diploma, andonce upon a time there used tobe a GCSE available in England,and a Royal Society of Arts exam.But now you can get two qualifi-cations for the price of one, asEAB has decided to award itsDiploma to candidates successfulin both the oral and writtenexaminations at level C1 of theKER-Ekzamenoj.

Special offerIn addition, to get things started,the Management Committee ofEAB has decided that EAB willsubsidise 50% of the exam feesfor any members of EAB or JEBwho wish to take the Esperanto

KER exam at B2 or C1 level (andturn up to attempt the exam).The exams are in two parts: oraland written. The fee for each partis £37 at B2 level, and £42 at C1level, so the subsidised prices aretherefore only £18.50 and £21respectively. The committee hasdecided that this special offerwill run for at least one year tobegin with, so you are advised toregister your interest now (detailsbelow).

Several hundred Esperanto-speakers throughout the world(not just Europe) have alreadytaken part in KER-Ekzamenosessions at various Esperantocongresses and gatherings. As yet,not very many candidates for theexaminations have been fromBritain. However, we are plan-ning on having a KER practicesession for everybody interestedat the British Esperanto Congressin Ramsgate (10–12 May 2013)which will be useful for anyoneplanning to be a candidate forthe exams at the session orsessions we are planning inBritain as part of the interna-tional Second Worldwide Exami-nation Session on 8 June 2013:http://www.edukado.net/novajhoj?id=296.

Many new initiatives forthe Ramsgate CongressThe British Congress 2013, which will take place at the King’s Theatre,Ramsgate, next May – Fri 10th to Sun 12th – will depart from the usualpattern of British Congresses in a number of respects.

Ramsgate with its proximity tothe Continent allows thisCongress to be much moreinternational than usual. Notonly are there five establishedcross-channel routes linking thetown to Calais, Dunkerque andOstend, but also new services areexpected to start up in time forthe Congress. A fast-craft serviceis planned connecting Boulognedirect to Ramsgate, and KLMhave just announced flightsstarting in April from Amsterdam(Schipol) in Holland to Manston,which is only 3 miles from thecentre of Ramsgate. As Schipol isa major hub airport, this linksRamsgate to the world.

This is a modest pair of bookletsaccompanying a DVD document-ing the effects of earthquakes onlife in Japan.

The DVD, relating to theearthquake of 1923 and thesubsequent rebuilding, has acompilation of telling images –still and moving, black-and-white and colour, from the pastand the present – which providethe backdrop to the spoken text.Occasionally there are super-imposed titles or captions.

The text is reproduced verba-tim in the booklet with the same

title, which helps to clarifymatters when the spoken text isunclear – either because of theodd lapses by the speaker, orwhere, for Europeans at least,unfamiliar names are used. Theintroduction explains that thefilm material was compiled in2010, in Japanese, as a jubileetribute to the reconstruction andexpansion of Yokohama, but theirony of history makes it nowalso – more urgently – a re-minder to the world of whatJapan experienced in March 2011and beyond.

The second booklet de-scribes this latter earthquake, thetsunamis, and the ensuingdevastation, casting a glance infifteen or so short sections atvarious aspects of public andprivate life. The description isnot particularly scientific ortechnical, but it is relativelystraightforward reporting, quiteaccessible to the general reader.Its emotional restraint is in starkcontrast to what it describes.

In October 2012, while brows-ing on eBay, I was surprised tocome across an unrecordedmessage by Dr Zamenhof listedfor sale. Addressed to a Mr EdwinRoberts, secretary of theAccrington Esperanto Society inLancashire, the postcard is clearlywritten in Zamenhof’s spideryscript. It is undated, but thepostmark makes it clear it wasposted in August 1912. Wonder-ing about the source of this cardand other Esperanto books helisted, I contacted the vendor,who kindly replied:

“I acquired them a few weeksago at a local shop that deals inhouse clearances and bric-a-brac.… I bought quite a lot; they werenot expensive. When lookingthrough the books when I gothome I realised that they had

belonged to thepresident of theAccrington Espe-ranto branch,Mr H.E. Roberts.There were littlenotes and a fewpostcards tucked inbetween the pages;this is where I found theL.L. Zamenhof postcard.”

Considerable bid for postcardDr Zamenhof’s postcard is notearth-shattering. He writes tothank the Esperantists inAccrington, turning down theinvitation to him to becometheir Honorary President. Hewrote many such cards turningdown such titles. It would havebeen good to acquire this cardfor the Butler Library, but it

was finally soldfor £310!

It is all tooclear what hadhappened. De-scendants of MrH.E. (probablyEdwin) Robertshad kept the bookssafely, until thenext generationwanted to sell thehouse, and theycalled in a contrac-tor to clear every-thing out.

Importance of conservationThe sudden appearance of apreviously unknown postcardfrom Zamenhof should serve toremind us of how important it isto conserve our records. TheButler Library in Barlaston is asuperb collection of books andother resources, looked after bylibrarian Geoffrey King, andthere are minute books andcorrespondence in and aboutEsperanto to be found in severalrecords offices in different partsof the United Kingdom.

On Sunday, 23 September Coventry Language Café arranged a multi-lingual café at the Central Library as part of the European Day ofLanguages. There were about ten languages represented, both Euro-pean and languages of the Far East, as well as Esperanto. Tim Owenand Clare Hunter manned the Esperanto table, while John Gobournevisited the other tables to do a little promotion. About 40 peoplevisited the café during the afternoon but it was noticeable that themajority of conversations were in English, except at the Esperantotable where Tim, Clair and John joked and chatted as though Espe-ranto was their mother tongue.

• Enriched, expanded libraryplanned for new Lernu.netThe new library, which will belaunched with the new Lernu.netin early 2013, will have a muchwider collection of content thanthe current library. The contentswill include many works ofEsperanto literature, and alsosounds and videos with accom-panying text. The planned librarywill be especially useful tobeginners, with its ability totranslate words with a simpleclick, but its contents will be richand varied enough to be interest-ing for Esperantists of all levels.

Part of the project is toinclude, with permission, textsfrom the literature archive ofDon Harlow, a well-known USEsperantist who died severalyears ago. The new library willmake his work available to a newgeneration of Esperantists, in aneasy-to-use form. ESF is finan-cially supporting the creation ofthe new library as part of itssupport for a complete renova-tion of Lernu. If you want tocontribute to the project, theLernu team ([email protected])is looking for volunteers to helpenter texts; a high level of Espe-ranto is not necessary. Obituary – NekrologoDonald Lord died on 30 September 2012 after a long illness. Donstudied Esperanto in an evening course at the age of 15. He wastaught by one of the teachers of the famous Eccles Experiment.During the war and in the 1950s he had little contact with theorganised Esperanto movement until a chance meeting with amember of the Manchester Esperanto Society in the early 1960s.Don joined the Manchester club, which then had a large andactive membership, and soon became one of its most enthusiasticand productive members and officers. Within a short time Donbecame involved also in the national movement and over theyears held various offices in the British Esperanto Association,including membership committee president and vice-president.His lectures and seminars were always extremely popular, and hiserudition was evident even when seemingly masked under coverof the most hilarious presentation. He will be missed by his manyfriends in the national and international movement. A full obitu-ary will appear in La Brita Esperantisto, Spring 2013.
