James Ross Carmichael
February 1, 1958 —September 14, 2014
Jimmy passed away peacefully after a long illness fought valiantly at
home in Boston Bar but came to his final rest at Hope Hospice Care in
the Fraser Canyon Hospital. Many thanks to Dr. Greggain and staff
for their wonderful care of Jimmy.
Jimmy is predeceased by his parents and sister Debbie. He leaves behind
a wife, Nancy Carmichael (Boston Bar), son Jessie, stepson Colin
(Calgary), sister Wendy Clarke (Peachland) and many nieces and
nephews.
For well over 20 years Jimmy worked as a grader operator for Teal Jones – keeping the roads
open and more importantly to him, the locals plowed out and able to navigate. Jimmy also
worked part time during the winter for Emil Anderson keeping the Canyon open and generously
volunteered his time helping out his community with many projects.
(A service for Jimmy was held at Boston Bar Community Hall on Saturday, September 27th
2014. In lieu of flowers & donations, please give to the Boston Bar North Bend Food Bank or
the Fraser Canyon Hospice Society.)
Upper Fraser Valley Crime Stoppers This month, we would like to remind everyone that we are looking for your help in making Boston Bar the saf-est community in the Fraser Valley. We appreciate your efforts that have kept the community safe and we are always looking to be one step ahead, or at least fairly close behind… Here is how you can help: UFV Crime Stoppers: Anonymous: Call 1-800-222-8477 - Operators are available to take your tips 24/7; TipSubmit Mobile - Download the app and submit your tips anonymously from your smart phone; Secure online TIP form - Visit www.ufvcs.ca Another way you can help is to come and chat with us. We love hearing about how well our community is do-ing and we want to continue that trend. We want to know about anything that will keep our community safe. Information can include something as simple as who stole your neighbour’s bicycle to something more com-plex such as who is responsible for break and enters, thefts, etc. Here are some of the things we would like you to be on the look-out for:
Theft - Do you know who is responsible for thefts in the area? Drugs - Do you know who deals drugs locally, what type of vehicle they drive? Break and Enter - Do you know who is responsible for break and enters? Stolen Property - Do you know where someone has stolen property, bicycles, vehicles? Grow Ops/Meth Labs - Have you noticed a strange smell, blacked out windows? Suspicious Persons/Vehicles - Have you seen someone you don’t recognize next door? Arrest Warrant - Do you know where someone with an outstanding arrest warrant is hiding?
Tips regarding criminal activity can be made anonymously through crime stoppers or by speaking with any of your Boston Bar RCMP constables. Remember, safety of our community is in everyone’s hands.
Crime of the Month: On September 21, 2014, at approximately 05:15 hours, someone visited a BC Hydro construction site, located approxi-mately 6km up the Anderson Creek Forest Service Road outside of Boston Bar, B.C. Suspect(s) stole approximately 2100 liters of diesel as well as generators and variety of non-power and power tools totaling between $15-20,000. On September 22, 2014, the following morning, suspect(s) attended a site located about half a kilometer up Spuzzum Creek Forest Service Road and stripped parts from a BC Hydro CAT Excavator. Boston Bar RCMP located a surveillance photo of the possible suspect showing a large pickup truck with a "headache" rack attached to the rear box along with aftermarket rear tail lights. This isn’t just another unfortunate theft. This equipment will likely have to be replaced and could mean an in-crease in rates for BC Hydro customers. If you have information that would assist police with these investiga-tions, please call Boston Bar RCMP at 604-867-9333. Should you need to
remain anonymous, please call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Boston Bar School Reminder!! Now that all schools are back in session, Steve, Francois and I would like to remind
everyone, drivers and pedestrians, to be mindful of each other’s surroundings. Stay safe everyone!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The Mills are not giving away truck loads of firewood
like they have done in past years when they were
hauled free of charge by a log truck and given to the
Community Center in North Bend. As a result, we
are heading into winter with no fuel for heat.
IF we have to close the Community Centre for the
winter, it will mean NO Thrift Shoppe, NO Museum,
NO Art/Gift Shoppe, NO public internet and NO mu-
sical “jam” sessions.
If you can help with even a pick-up truck load of
wood, or know someone in a mill that has junk wood
they could and would load on a log truck, we can get
the log truck to haul it on a weekend, (providing it’s
not hundreds of miles away.)
If you have any suggestions, or can help in any
way, please phone Shirley at Canyon Lanes
867-8800 or Lillian at 867-9775.

Sunday was a gorgeous day, making the 3 1/2 hour trip to Boston Bar enjoyable for the 23 Cops for Can-cer cyclists riding from Hope through the beautiful Canyon accompanied by their dedicated support crew. Sergeant Sarah Swallow of Delta expressed that regardless of weather conditions, the difficulty of the terrain, or how tired and sore all these cyclers become during training and their 8-day tour, they all remain enthusiastic about their cause: to do everything they can to help children with paediatric cancer. Inspired by the children they have spent time with at Camp Goodtimes, their energy and motivation persists throughout their journey. Janis Mitchell, coordinator of Cops for Cancer, says it all begins with orientation in March for these riders, and requires a solid commitment by all. They then embark on a mandatory training program in April guid-ed by trainer and Team Captain, Constable Trevor Sales of Abbotsford. Short rides of 40 kms. at the start of training are increased by 20 kms. every couple of weeks so that by September's Tour de Valley, the Cops for Cancer team members have clocked several thousand kilometres during their physically demanding training. These committed Cops for Cancer riders must also spend hours individually fund-raising during the months preceding the Tour. Each is required to raise at least $5,000 and remarkably since April of 2014,
this amazing Tour de Valley Team managed to collectively raise a whopping $156,000.
A big thanks goes out to Principal Debra Devine, and Renee Aldridge at Boston Bar school and to all the community volunteers who generously contributed to the delicious luncheon enjoyed by very grateful
cyclists and their accompanying emergency personnel. Thanks also to those who donated to
Cops for Cancer and please remember: the need is there year-round.

WHO TO CALL. . .
Boston Bar School has started with the fast pace of an old time bluegrass tune. Fun to play, but requiring a well-practiced mind to recall previous learning. Our bluegrass tune this first week of school wasn’t per-fect but students and staff worked collaboratively in setting routines, building a sense of belonging for
everyone and identifying academic and character goals for the year.
Starting on Monday, September 29th students once a week for 45 minutes will learn about the First Nation Culture and the Nlaka’pamux language, taught by Charon Spinks.
A tentative date has been set for October 15th for “Moccasin Trek” workshop and have invited students from Lytton to participate with us.
Poinsettia Fundraiser starts on September 25th and continues to November 27th. Please see Cheryl Davidson if you are interested in purchasing one.
Purdy’s Chocolate Fundraiser is starting October 14th and ending December 1st as well.
Our Nutrition Program is starting October 27th as well as our K-1 Milk Program. Till then make sure
a fruit is packed in your child’s lunch. The rich vitamins, nutrients and fiber help to keep them alert in their
studies.
Our enrollment so far this year is fifty students. Our Grade 3 to 5 is our largest class of 16 students. Our teachers this year are Amanda Westerlund (StrongStart), Glynis Fraser (K-2), Alison Webber (3-5), Michele Dekok (7-9), Ronita Sharma and Shaun Salloway (10-12). Lorna Krogsgaard is our SEA, and
Cheryl Davidson our FN Worker.
In last months letter to you I shared that “It’s Better in Boston Bar”; and what really inspired me to say that is a visit from a former student who graduated here in 1984. You may remember this young man, Manji Kooner. He came in this summer with his mother, wife and two wonderful young sons. He came to show off to his sons the wonderful community and school he attended
when he was a boy.
Manji shared with me that Boston Bar was the best place to grow up in. Him and his friends had so many fun things to do and explore that they were never bored. He said that the adults in this community were friendly to them and that one in particular made a huge impact in his life. Un-fortunately, I cannot remember the gentleman’s name but Manji said that he worked for the rail-ways and when he was in Grade 12 asked the man if he could get him a job working on the
railways as well.
Because of that community member vouching for him, Manji has been working for the railway since he graduated in 1984. What is even more amazing is that his job is the Boston Bar run which brings him back here almost daily. His mother, wife and sons were delightful and their excitement to reminisce with their father and look through old graduation photos and walk these hall were inspirational to me. What an impact as a community you made on this young man! It makes me ask the question: How can we make a difference for kids here now in Boston Bar? Seems to me that their future lies in all of our hands. If you have any ideas on how we can con-
tinue to change kids’ lives, please share them with us. Your perspective is needed.
Hope to see you in our hallways soon! ~Ms. Debra Devine BBESS
