One of the trends in automation technology is to reduce the space requirement. The ap-propriate M12 circular connectors have open new dimensions of miniaturization - the equipment design as well as for the cabling of machines and equipment. Size of M12 connectors are used in many areas - today they are the standard when it comes to con-nection systems for plants and machines.

In recent

years, control technology

has advanced at a rapid pace. Devices are

becoming more compact and at the same time the elec-

trical interfaces are expected to fulfi ll more functions. Originally, having just 4 position connectors for new applications in sensor systems are being successively expanded up to 17 positions. M12 connectors have been upgraded to be capable of data transfer rates up to 10 Gbit/s, which means that they can also be used in Ethernet-based environ-ments.

The power demand is simultaneously increasing. Economic aspects also play a role in this context as the connection system has a signifi cant impact on the overall costs – especially for compact motors with integrat-ed electronics. Phoenix Contact developed the new “M12 Power” connector solution to connect compact motors and devices. As a consequence, a gap has been closed so that users can now use M12 connectors across the board for transferring signals, data, and power.

The connectors from the M12 Power series are mechanical-ly coded. This prevents M12 Power connec-tors from being accidentally inserted into a “normal” M12 sensor connection. The clearances and creepage distances of the connectors correspond to the specifi cations laid down in the stan-dards for classic power connectors. The products that are designed for line voltages have a protec-tive conductor with leading PE contact.

They have 4 power contacts with T coding for DC low-voltage applications up to 63 V and 12 A. The range also includes 3+PE power contacts with S coding for AC applications involving line voltages up to 630 V and 12 A. As a consequence, the M12 series has been expanded to include two addition-al codings, allowing it to address many new ap-plication areas. With a diameter of approximately 16 mm, the product dimensions still correspond to the usual, compact M12 design.

By developing plastic plug-in connector hous-ings, Phoenix Contact has created an eff ective alternative to standard aluminum housings. The new heavy-duty Heavycon EVO connectors are not only more cost-eff ective than the metal version they are modeled after, but they also off er additional advantages thanks to their plastic construction.

Angled bayonet connectionIndustrial plug connectors made of die-cast alu-

ties. But here, too, new possibilities have

emerged thanks to new high-perfor-

Heavycon Evo range of housings includes a va-riety of cable glands with an angled bayonet con-nection. With a simple 45° turn, the cable glands can

be easily installed by hand, either horizontally or vertically, on the sleeve housing. In this way, the cable outlet guides on the plug can also be adjusted on site to meet specifi c installation requirements. Since all housings in sizes HC-B 6 to HC-B 24 use the same bayonet con-nection, M20 to M40 screws can now be freely combined with sleeve and coupling housings. This adds fl exibility and minimizes the number of product versions required.

Fully compatibleThe inside of the plastic housings feature patented metal inlays that ensure that the standard fi xed and module contact inserts are securely fastened. In this way, requirements for

the lead-ing PE contact, which are also prescribed by industry standards, are also met, and the plastic housings can be freely combined with counterparts made out of die-cast aluminum. The panel mounting and base housings also fi t standard panel dimensions and wall cutouts. They also prevent the ingress of dust and liquids in accordance with the requirements of protection rating IP65/66.

70 percent fewer varietiesThanks to the slanted bayonet cable inlet, the need for diff erent product varieties can be eliminated. For example, with a sleeve housing, which is available with two straight and two lateral cable outlets and four screw sizes of M20, M25, M32, and M40, one housing can replace eight varieties. One Heavycon Evo coupling housing replaces four aluminum hous-ings. With base housings, 50 percent fewer versions are required, as the need for models with two cable inlets is eliminated. The second cable inlet can be created by simply prying out a cap during installa-tion. Furthermore, all brackets and protective cov-ers can be mounted in just a few simple steps, making overall installation even easier

‘Ecological backpack’ gets smallerUsing plastics instead of die-cast aluminum is also a good idea from an environmental perspective. For example, plastics require 50 percent less energy to manufacture than die-cast aluminum, and the environmental impact is lower.

The ‘ecological backpack’ is a conceptual tool for illustrating the amount of resources consumed in the production, use, and disposal of a product or service. As a form of life-cycle assessment, it pro-vides a way of benchmarking the ecological impact of supplying certain products.

Plastic plug-in connector housings are more effi cient from a logistics perspective: one plastic housing replaces eight aluminum housings, and the four cable glands cover standard cable clamp sizes from M20 to M40.

Plastic plug-in connector housingsFlexible, compatible & rugged

Compatible with the die-cast aluminum market standard: Plastic housings fi t standard wall cutouts, can accommo-date fi xed or modular contact inserts, and can be freely combined.

Vertical or horizontal: by turning the plug by 45°, the cable outlet gland can be adjusted to local installation requirements.

An inferior power grid quality along with the growing use of sensitive electronics has led to increased downtimes. There is a competitive advantage to be had where the production pro-cess runs smoothly even when the grid quality is defi cient. Special attention should therefore be paid to the power supply, which is the core of any installation. In this way, unexpected costs due to voltage drops can be avoided in advance.

Voltage interruptions aff ect the production process: they lead to loss of data as well as a breakdown of the control system, resulting in expensive damage to equipment and the product when a machine restarts automatically.

Even short downtimes can lead to high costs. In such cases, investment in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) pays off in a very short time.

Scenario of power supplyPlant operators all over the world are faced with unstable grids that necessitate the use of power supplies with a high failure bridging time, buff er modules or uninterruptible power supplies According to breakdown statistics, breakdowns in the medium voltage grids are due to the following reasons -weather condi-tions, short circuits, line interruptions or techni-cal failures. Almost half of these breakdowns led to interruptions in power supply.

What makes the QUINT UPS-IQ an intelligent UPS ?

IQ technology is intuitive and provides with informa-tion when required.

Intelligent Battery Management

SOC (State of Charge) – Current charging state and remaining back-up time of the battery unit.

SOH (State of Health) – Remaining life expec-tancy of the battery unit, provides early warning for a potential battery unit failure.

SOF (Stage of Function) – Determines the cur-rent performance of the battery unit.

Intelligent Battery Control – Automatically de-tects the connected battery type and maximizes the remaining service life of the battery unit via an optimally adapted charging characteristic.

Intelligent Charging – Adapts the charging cur-rent and thereby ensures the fastest possible recharging and availability.

Data Port – Serves the communication between the UPS and PC, e.g. for confi guration of the UPS.

DC UPS – Plays a significant role in increas-ing plant & system availabilityThe Quint DC-UPS provides long buff er times with long-life lead-acid storage batteries. They are especially suitable for an uninterrupted supply to control units, machines and systems with high downtime costs or those where the downtime could damage expensive products and equipment.

The currently available solutions are generally too big for the DIN rails and diffi cult to wire. Phoenix Contact thus developed UPS modules whose uniform and small design minimizes the space required for the mounting rails and ensures neatness with short wiring routes. The current limiting signal output is so far a unique feature, which does not lead to high cur-rents in the case of a faulty connection and so prevents the welding of relay contacts. In this way, an appropriate signal is always displayed.

Minimum downtimes off er a defi nite competi-tive advantage. Phoenix Contact off ers a com-prehensive product range for a reliable power supply that enables individual solutions for a smooth production process.

You may not be able to see them, but power abnormalities that originate within your ma-chines automated control system are costing the expensive downtime. Automated equip-ment in the machine has a low tolerance for poor power quality, especially if it is controlled by a PLC and drives. Surges can be produced by lightning and utility companies switching feeders or capacitors banks. The most com-mon surges are produced within your facility by switching action of the load equipment. These surges, lasting only a short period of time (microseconds), are injected onto power and data circuits causing equipment damage and safety hazards.

Effect of surge over voltage on machine control technologyOver 65% of damage/ premature failures/ aging occur in PLC, Controllers, Power supplies, cards etc. is due to surge over voltages.

• The damage depends on the magnitude of the surge over-voltages, and on the kind of equipment and/or components it reaches. For example , the heavy industrial equipment can withstand far greater surge energy with minimal damage, compared to more sensitive equipment like computer-controlled systems, PCBs, telecom & signaling equipment, PLCs, drives etc.

• Switching mode power supply SMPS is called the heart of the machine. These devices also are susceptible and vulnerable to power surges. Every time these surges occur they decrease the life span of these equipment.

• Surge over voltage protection components are often misapplied – Surge over voltage device do not fi lter, regulate or isolate. These tasks are accomplished by isolation transformer, uninterrupted power supplies and capacitor banks.

• A VFD (Variable Frequency Drive ) itself generates disruptive surge within its internal switch-mode power supply and drive circuits that refl ect back into the branch circuit. Even state-of-the-art systems designed to isolate the VFD from the distribution are inundated by EMF (electromotive force) induction surges. These transients interrupt data transmissions between the PLC and its I/O as well as plant communications.

Machine Control power quality and surge protectionA well-conceived protective concept

Surge Voltage protection for Machine PanelA well-conceived protective concept is indispensable for electrical systems in order to avoid damage caused by surge voltages. To achieve this, Phoenix Contact off ers comprehensive solutions to secure a high line and signal quality in control cabinets. Type 2 surge voltage protections are the most important components for protecting the power supply of control cabinets of machine panel against surge voltages. It combines a high discharge capacity with

a low protection level, long service life, and compact size. The protection level is low enough to eff ectively protect electronic equipment such a frequency converters, control systems, and switched-mode power supplies.

Today’s sensitive electronic equipment is very vul-nerable to damage by surges from lightning and other internal and external surges. Surges cause destructive, dissipative and destructive damage that lead to costly downtime, repairs and other expenses to sensitive electronic equipment. In-stalling quality surge protection devices (SPDs) on power, signal and data lines provides complete protection and ensures reliability.
