Last week we were treated to a presentation by Matt Pollard on his and Dianne’s trip around Far North Queensland and particularly into some of the more remote regions that most of us had only fleeting knowledge, or none at all, of their existence. Such presentations, of course, also expose us to the diversity of this country of ours and of the people who live in it. I was particularly impressed by the creativity of the youngest son who turned his inheritance of what was considered the almost worthless piece of real estate into quite a lucrative business; the result of some creative and lateral thinking. I think the lesson here is that in our ever-changing and shrinking world opportunities exist in all sorts of situations but may lay dormant because of existing social and economic mores i.e. they are considered worthless or unviable, or they lay dormant because of our unwillingness to let go of ‘the good old days of tried and true methods’. My argument is that what was ‘tried and true’ in former situations may be totally out of place or counter-productive in current or emerging situations i.e. our future. Technology is changing our world particularly in communications, transport and the way in which we work. We need to adapt our thinking to enhance the value of our club to the community. In particular we need to consider more lateral and creative ways of increasing membership and diversifying our fund-raising and to improve the way we run our club administration to lessen the load on many members and to free-up their time for serving the community. We plan to conduct a Club Visioning exercise during this Rotary year and we also hold Club forums. I urge all members to think laterally and creatively so they can make useful contributions to planning our future. Ken Maher

The diverse activities of our members provide fertile ground for contributions of all sorts. Congratulations

Matt and Dianne Pollard are once again grandparents following the arrival of baby Spencer born Thursday

morning. Congratulations to Alison and Trent.

Note from Margaret and David Chivers

Thank-you all for your interest and generosity towards Leigh and Sara Chivers' Fundraising efforts. They

hope that this contribution will enable further research into the treatment of Brain Cancer and will, in time,

find a cure for this disease. To date they have raised $32352...an amazing response .Kind regards, Marg &

Dave Chivers.

Members Moment – David Shave. David spoke about his days

as a young corporate executive called upon to lead a group of 32 people

on a business trip to the US in 1969. He said the tour got off to an

interesting start when the group’s collection of some 50 liquor bottles

packed in a box, broke open and tumbled along the baggage carousel at

Los Angeles airport. All bottles were succesfully recovered and the tour

proceeeded onwards through America.

Savannah Way – Adventure Drive

Guest Speaker – Matt Pollard

Matt and partner Dianne spent several weeks travelling across the

Savannah Way which stretches thousands of kilometres from Far North

Queensland to Broome in WA. The highlight of their trip was visiting

some quite remote and relatively unknown places south west of Cairns

in an area that includes the Undara National Volcanic Park. It features

Lava tubes formed by a giant eruption about 190 thousand years ago.

There are about 50 caves in the park that provide protection for

hundreds of species of fauna.

The Pollards also toured a place called Cobbold Gorge, the site of a huge outback

pastoral station which in recent decades was found to contain a hidden treasure; a

six kilometre gorge fed by springs that seep through 200 million old sandstone. The

gorge is now a wonderful tourist attraction that provides accommodation, a

restaurant, and camping ground that attracts about 10,000 visitors a year.

Further west, Matt and Di travelled to Lawn Hill an area that was part of a massive

pastroral station until 1984. Know to local Aboriginals as Rainbow Serpant Country,

it is now a national park that has little in the way of facilities but is well regarded for

its huge gorge and the adjacent magnificent walks. Some 10 kilometres away is

Adels Grove which sits under a green rainforest canopy. It is named after Albert De

lan Strange; a settler who propogated exotic plants and trees that were provided to botanic gardens all over the

world. Within the national park is the world acclaimed fossil dig at Riversleigh. Now a world heritage site it

contains fossil animal remains including dinosaurs dating back 25 million years. These fossila can be viwed at

a Visitors Centre in Mount Isa, and at the University of NSW.

Matt’s advice to drivers along the Savannah Way and adjacent roads is

to just “Get out of the way” of the road train trucks that barrel down the

roads leaving behind a plume of red bull dust.
