DUEL IN THE DESERT: The Dodgers conclude their six-game road
trip (2-3) with the rubber match of their three-game series at Arizona
following last night’s 7-4 win. The club, which opened the trip by
dropping two of three games in San Francisco, will return to Los
Angeles tonight for a seven-game homestand against the Brewers (4
G) and Nationals (3 G).
Los Angeles has gone 6-2 in series rubber matches this year.
The Dodgers have gone 31-12 (.721) against Arizona since
the start of the 2014 season, the best record by any team
against a divisional foe in that span – Source: Stats, LLC.
THE PEN IS MIGHTY: After allowing just one run in 3.2 innings
last night, the Dodgers now boast the lowest bullpen ERA of any
National League team:
Bullpen ERA, 2016 NL
1. Los Angeles Dodgers 3.04 (68 ER/201.1 IP)
2. New York Mets 3.05
3. Washington Nationals 3.06
Overall, the Royals (2.57 ERA) and Orioles (3.01) are the
only big league teams with a lower bullpen ERA.
Adam Liberatore has not allowed a run in his last 14 games
(9.0 IP) since May 20 and has tossed scoreless relief in 27 of
28 appearances this year. He is limiting opposing hitters to a
.191 batting avg., including a .125 mark (5-for-40) vs. lefties.
Joe Blanton ranks among NL relievers in opponents’ batting
average (.138, 2nd
) and WHIP (0.71, 2nd
).
SIMPLY THE BEST: Clayton Kershaw is unbeaten in his last eight
starts since May 1, going 7-0 with a 0.99 ERA (7 ER/63.2 IP), a .150
opponents’ batting average and 82 strikeouts against just three walks in
that span. Overall, he leads the Majors in ERA (1.52, 2nd
: Jake Arrieta,
1.86), strikeouts (122, 2nd
: Jose Fernandez/Max Scherzer, 118), innings
(100.2, 2nd
: Johnny Cueto, 95.2) and WHIP (0.65, 2nd
: John Lackey,
0.93), while ranking second in opponents’ batting average (.169, 1st:
Marco Estrada, .168) and tying for fourth in wins (9). His 20.33
strikeout-to-walk ratio remains on pace to establish a modern record,
far outpacing Phil Hughes’ 11.63 mark in 2014.
A win today - in his 14th start of the year - would give
Kershaw double-digit wins for the seventh consecutive year
since 2010. It would mark the earliest by calendar date that he
reached the 10-win mark (current mark: July 4, 2014) and the
second-fewest starts to do so after picking up his 10th win in
his 13th start in 2014.
A “W” today would move Kershaw into sole possession of
seventh place on the all-time Los Angeles wins list. He is
currently tied for seventh with Ramon Martinez with 123
victories (123-57).
HILLTOPPERS: The Dodger pitching staff been dominant over the
last three weeks:
Dodger MLB Ranks Since May 22
ERA 2.61 2nd
(58 ER/200.1 IP)
>Relievers 1.53 1st (13 ER/76.2 IP)
Opponents’ Avg. .194 1st
WHIP 0.96 1st
Overall, the Dodgers rank fourth in the Majors with a 3.34
team ERA, while placing second with a .216 opponents’
batting average and 605 strikeouts.
GOLDEN GLOVEWORK: By defensive efficiency, which measures
turning balls in play into outs, the Dodgers rank second in the Majors,
trailing only the Cubs, with a .721 efficiency rating, according to
Baseball-Reference.com.
The Dodgers have committed only 31 errors, tied for the
fourth-fewest of any MLB team, behind only the Nationals
(23), White Sox (28) and Giants (29). The club’s .987 fielding
pct. is tied for the fourth-best mark in the Majors.
CLOSING IN: Kenley Jansen struck out the side last night to earn his
160th career save, leaving him one shy of tying Eric Gagné’s Dodger
franchise record of 161. Jansen has tossed scoreless relief in 24 of 27
games this year, successfully converting 18 of 21 save opportunities.
Chase Utley drove in four runs last night, going 2-for-5 with
a homer, and scored his 999th career run. With his next run
scored, Utley would become the 13th active player to score
1,000 career runs.
Adrián González is approaching two career milestones,
entering today’s game just four home runs shy of 300 and
seven doubles away from 400. He would become just the
seventh active player to reach both marks.
