LOVE CHEST...This chest is called a DAMCHIYA. It is the hope chest for brides of India. Unlike our plain pine and oak hope chests in America, these stand out with their rustic embellishments. Think of the years of girls, then women storing away their treasures for the future. We have collected vintage originals as well as imported newly minted ones. It’s hard to tell which is which although the old ones have that certain patina. All share interesting hand carving and tiny windows with inlays of shell, metal and mirrors on the front panel. No two are alike. These are perfect for entry areas, night stands or just standing around looking cool. Come by our 90,000 sq ft warehouse and check them out. INDUS DESIGN IMPORTS • 1817 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ 85281 • To the trade only. Mon - Fri • 8am-5pm • 480-966-4685

Congratulations Lindsay!Lindsay Radford, daughter of our past IFDA President, Dede Radford, and recent ASU West Graduate receiving her B.A. in Psychology, just happens to have that design gene in her too! They are judged on Most Sun Devil Pride, Best Use of An Inspirational Quote and Best Representation of an ASU College, School or Institute. The voting was done on-line and the ASU Alumni Choice and Parents Association Choice determined the five winning entries. Lindsay was one of the winners! Pacific Resource Group is now carrying a new line of 100% linen direct from Europe. Great colors, weights and looks. There’s even a burlap look! Memo sampling is available in the showroom. Member NewsSocial Media and IFDA AZ
By Charlene Kingston VP of Social Media/IFDA Board 2012
The business world has embraced social media as a communications tool for conversations between businesses and clients. As a chapter, we are going to begin using social media in 2012 more extensively! I’m excited to be part of bringing social media to our chapter through practical, business-focused activities and resources.
If you use social media in your business, or if you are thinking about adding social media for your business, you’ll find resources available on my website at SocialMediaDIYWorkshop.com. There are over 165 articles, along with ebooks, webinars and recordings of my monthly free conference calls, all available to help you learn and expand your social media use. Sign up for my monthly newsletter to learn about new products and services including a schedule of upcoming events.
Additionally, I’ve created a hidden resource on the website specifically for chapter members and partners. Go to http://socialmediadiyworkshop.com/ifda. I’ll use this page to share articles each month to help you learn about social media topics related to your design business.
If you already use social media, would you consider volunteering to help build a dynamic and comprehensive design resource for our chapter? Each quarter Paula Tocker will announce new opportunities for you to contribute your skills that will directly benefit the chapter.
I look forward to meeting all of you and talking about how social media can help you grow your businesses!
I would be happy to offer webinars on topics that would help our members learn how to use social media tools. I have also created a page just for IFDA! Check it out at socialmediadiyworkshop.com/ifda/

Tina Mellino isa name you will see muchof this year, she is our2012 Tableau Chair! We wanted to get to know a little bit about her so we asked her a few fun questions!
Tina, how did you get start-ed in the industry? My Mother was an Interior Designer, Artist, Jewelry Designer and incredible business woman! She educated and influenced me to appreciate architecture, design, art and all of the finer things in life! She also gave me artistic license to ‘deco-rate’ my room at the age of 11 in a color palette of, hot pink, purple and white! It was very Mod!
Whom do you admire most in the industry? I love the icons. ‘Sister Parish’, ‘David Hicks’, ‘Ralph Lauren’, Billy Baldwin, Barbara Barry. True entrepreneurs and traditional lifestyle designers.
What is your dream vacation? I would love to go back in time to experience different time periods (you said ‘dream’).
What is one thing people might be surprised to know about you? I am an adrenalin junkie and will try just about anything adventurous!

8 The quarterly news of the IFDA Arizona Chapter ifdaaz.com
IFDA Welcomes Karen Mandarino
How did you get started in the industry? I got started after I took an evening Introductory Design class at Rio Salado. I showed my semester project to a designer and she said that if business was better, at the time in 1988, she would hire me. Because of her I proceeded to get my Associates degree in Applied Sciences. When I graduated in 2001, business was in a turn down also and no one was hiring, so I opened my business Bella More Interior Design.
Whom do you admire most in the industry? I don’t admire a single designer but I feel that all designers who have earned notoriety in their design business or who are sustaining a business in this economic downturn deserve to be admired for their fortitude to keep reinventing themselves to keep doing what they love to do.
How would you describe your esthetic or style that best represents your work as a designer? I don’t have a signature style of my own. I really love all styles, each has elements that work well with the other. I also design for the client. They have something in mind or have elements that they love and I create for them what they see in their minds and then I add the WOW factor for them.

State laws regulating the VOC (volatile organic compounds) content in paint and other finishes are as variable as paint color. “The laws are constantly evolving,” says Steve Revnew, director of marketing, product development for Sherwin-Williams.

The Sherwin-Williams LEED and VOC Coatings Reference Guide is updated continually to reflect the most recent LEED, OTC, CARB, NAHB and other guidelines. IFDA Welcomes Naomi Anderson How did you get started in the industry? I was fortunate enough, in 1986, to be hired on as an account representative at an association management company in Phoenix that handled non-profit professional organizations. I was assigned ASID as one of my accounts. It was then that I fell in love with the world of interior design and learned the importance design has on our quality of life. Since then, I have remained in the design industry as a marketing/communications professional providing design business marketing strategies and implementation. Whom do you admire most in the industry? Well, that’s a really tough one because there have been so many trailblazers who have positively impacted the design industry. I would have to say however, I most admire all residential interior designers. The stories I’ve been told over the years about the incredible challenges and the unique solutions they provide are quite impressive. Several years ago I came across an astonishing list of careers in order of “level of stress” and “residential interior designer” ranked just below “air traffic controller” in the 6th position out of 50. Truly! My hat’s off to you!
What do you love most about your job? What a greatquestion, and it’s a fairly easy one for me to answer. It would be helping my clients expand and reach their maximum potentialand taking away the fear of moving beyond their comfort zone inpromoting their individual talent, product and/or services

How much fun was lunch at Vincent’s? It was a beautiful winter day and we were in the newly renovated dining room where we sipped on bubbles and satisfied our taste buds with the wonderful cuisine of Vincent Guerithault. We were joined by two gals from Ryan House as our table runneth over with wonderful pantry item donations for them to take “home”. We also honored Scott Sandler, our longest and most beloved Tableau photographer and friend and raffled off fun prizes to some lucky winners!
