That same year, Bentall Kennedy also selected the same charity organization as the company’s charity of choice. The Children’s Cottage Society is dedicated to preventing harm and neglect to children and building strong families through support services, respite programs and crisis nurseries. They are a recognized leader in providing effective programs and services to help ensure Safe Children in Healthy Families. Since 2013, we have raised nearly $18,000 for Children’s Cottage through your participation in our building events such as the Wine and Beer Tasting and Stampede breakfasts. We have also collected clothing, food and other needed items worth $3,000, and raffled off seven donated iPads at our Stampede events with the proceeds going to Children’s Cottage. Bentall Kennedy has been a great supporter of the Society by helping with funding, furniture, electronics, donations, and employee volunteer hours. Bentall Kennedy was particularly active when the organization’s Crisis Nursery in Bridgeland was heavily affected by the June 2013 floods. Bentall Kennedy donated $15,000, construction materials, furniture, electronics and hundreds of volunteer hours altogether worth almost $100,000. Earth Day 2016Let’s get planting!

Earth Day was first celebrated in theUnited States in 1970. The first nationalEarth Day Canada occurred in 1990 withan estimated 3 million Canadiansparticipating in the celebration.

Now Earth Day is celebratedglobally in nearly 200 countries. The main purpose of worldwideEarth Day is to unite people of manydifferent cultures for the single purposeof caring for the earth.

The theme for this year and a goal of the global Earth Day Network over thenext several years, is Trees for the Earth. Let’s get planting. To honor thisyear’s Earth Day, we will again be donating $2,000 - $500 per building – tosupport planting trees in Alberta through Forest Recovery Canada.

About Forest Recovery CanadaForest Recovery Canada (FRC) is a national planting program that facilitatesplantings in an effort to establish contiguous forests across Canada. Workingwith more than 85 planting partners, including conservation authorities, stewardship councils, forestry consultants and local community groups,Forest Recovery Canada supports increased forest cover in ecologicallysignificant areas and enhances the country’s natural biodiversity throughtree planting.

Plantings delivered through this program, with the supportof partners like Bentall Kennedy, contribute to a widerange of ecological benefits including: habitatrestoration, offsetting forest fragmentation, restoring areas affected by invasive species, and enhancing the health of watersheds.FRC also identifies planting sites whereplantings will establish greaterconnectivity between forestedareas, in turn enhancingcapacity to sequesteremissions.

Environment WeekPreserve, protect, andexplore the environment!! This year’s Environment Week is June 6-10.We will celebrate with activities meantto raise awareness among our tenantsregarding sustainable options that canhelp the environment.

What Is CanadianEnvironment Week?Canadian Environment Week is a time forgrassroots action to help preserve, protectand restore our environment. This annualevent provides us all with an opportunityto celebrate the progress that has beenmade but also to encourage further effortsall year long.

Who StartedEnvironment Week? The idea for Environment Week emergedin 1970, when former Prime Minister JohnDiefenbaker (PM from 1957-1963) notedthe “tremendous energy, enthusiasm andinitiative” of young people concerned aboutpollution. Diefenbaker approached the Houseof Commons with the concept of settingone week a year aside to focus onenvironmental issues.

Later that same year, Tom Goode, a Memberof Parliament from British Columbia, pursuedDiefenbaker’s idea by introducing a bill todesignate a "Canadian National PollutionAwareness Week". The bill was passed bythe House based on considerable supportfrom the public and all political parties.Royal Assent was given in March 1971.

To draw attention to all aspects ofa healthy environment, the name"Canadian National EnvironmentWeek" was chosen.

AROUNDTHE BUILDINGMake your own green cleaning products!Natural cleaning products are better foryou and for the environment. Many areavailable in the same place that youpurchase non-green products. But anotheroption is to make your own, easily doneand often with products you already have.

The basic supplies you’ll need to makeyour own green cleaners include:

• Distilled white vinegar

• Baking soda

• Olive oil

• Borax (sold in a box in the laundry aisle)

• Liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner'sbrand, found in most natural foods stores)

• Essential oils (super concentratednatural plant oils found in natural foodsstores, usually in the cosmetics section)

• Microfiber cleaning cloths

• Newspaper

Here are a few basic “recipes”and techniques to get you started:

• Glass: Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1 quartof water in a spray bottle. Spray on glassand wipe clean with old newspaper or alint-free cloth.

• Countertops and bathroom tile:Mix 2 parts vinegar and 1 partbaking soda with 4 parts water.Apply with a sponge, scour, andwipe away.

• Floors: Mix 4 cups of white distilledvinegar with about a gallon of hot water. If desired, add a few drops of purepeppermint or lemon oil for a pleasantscent.

After damp mopping the floors, the smellof vinegar will dissipate quickly, leavingbehind only the scent of the oil.

• Wood furniture: Mix equal parts oflemon juice and olive and oil. Apply asmall amount toa cloth, and rub onto thefurniture in long, even strokes.

• Toilet bowl cleaner: Sprinkle a toiletbrush with baking soda and scrub away!Occasionally disinfect your toilet byscrubbing with borax instead. Wipe theoutside of the toilet clean with straightvinegar.

• Disinfectant: Mix 2 teaspoons borax,4 tablespoons vinegar, 3 cups hot water, and 1/4 teaspoon liquid castile soap.Wipe on with dampened cloth or use aspray bottle. Wipe clean.

• Mold and mildew: Wipe with straightvinegar.

• Air freshener: Sprinkle essential oil ona cotton ball, and stash it in a corner ofthe room out of the reach of children.Lavender is a relaxing scent that is greatfor bedrooms, and cinnamon, clove, andcitrus oils are great for the rest of thehouse. You can stash a few in the cartoo — try peppermint, which mayhelp you to stay alert.

Spring cleaning your officeSpring always feels like a time of fresh starts. Get a fresh start at work by spring cleaning youroffice space. Here are a few tips to get you started...

• Make a habit of being organized. Schedule five minutes into your daily calendar to go through all of the things that you have on your desk.

• Do it in sections. Any task can seem daunting if you do it all at once. Take it in sections.Even if you only clean a little bit of your office space, you’ll feel better than if you don’tclean at all.

• Ditch the ink. What’s more frustrating than reaching for a pen, only to find out it doesn’twork? Non-working pens seem to outnumber the working ones by a five-to-one marginGo through your pens. If it doesn’t work, toss it out. Life’s too short for scribbling and shaking.

• Sort your papers. Your email inbox isn’t the only one that’s overflowing.Go through thatstack of papers that’s been growing since the last time you cleaned your desk (probably round the first of the year!). Make a system and keep up with it.

• Clean your computers and other electronics. We use them every day, spill coffee on them, and sometimes take them into the bathroom with us. Take a few minutes and clean yourelectronics (with special wipes for your screens, a keyboard cleaner that picks up junk inbetween the letters, and even a spray can of air should do the trick).

• Contain the cords. At the very least, find a way to contain all of the cords that are runningfrom your various (newly cleaned) electronic devices. You don’t have to do anything fancy, just go find some binder clips for that hip “industrial” look.

• Organize your emails. The inbox full of papers only gets filled every so often. But every daywelcomes you to hundreds of new emails demanding your attention.Keep this organized, even if you’re the only one who sees it.
