WELCOME TO MAREEL CINEMA

You are now able to book tickets to see great films further in advance. We are trialling moving our cinema programming from 1 week to 2 weeks ahead. We may lose some ability to respond to customer demand on a weekly basis, e.g, introducing new films, or squeezing in more popular films at short notice. But the major plus side is that you’re able to plan your cinema trips and book tickets nice and early! Special Screenings for the upcoming month will also now go on sale in advance.

This trial will run for the next two months and we welcome your feedback, good and bad, throughout this period. Thanks for your support! *Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of cinema programming, some details may be subject to change.

CINEMA TICKETS

Our prices vary depending on the day and time of the performance, and the type of screening. When booking you will be asked to choose between two different ticket types: adult or concession. Concessions include children aged up to 15 years old (those aged 16 and above must buy adult tickets), students (must produce valid ID), seniors (aged 60+), and people with disabilities.

Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded once purchased. Customers are responsible for checking that they have booked the correct tickets at time of purchase as mistakes cannot be rectified at a later date. Only in the event of a screening being cancelled will your ticket be refunded.

Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Mareel, the Garrison Theatre & Bonhoga Gallery. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events.

THE LEGOMOVIE (3D & 2D)Showing from: Fri 28 FebTickets on sale: Now

The Lego Movie follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as a most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. Emmet (Chris Pratt) is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which he is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie join Chris Pratt to form the cast of the first-ever full-length theatrical LEGO movie, the greatest movie ever assembled.

THE INVISIBLEWOMANShowing from: Fri 28 FebTickets on sale: Now

Nelly (Felicity Jones), a happily-married mother and schoolteacher, is haunted by her past. Her memories, provoked by remorse and guilt, take us back in time to follow the story of her relationship with Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) with whom she discovered an exciting but fragile complicity. Dickens - famous, controlling and emotionally isolated within his success - falls for Nelly, who comes from a family of actors. The theatre is a vital arena for Dickens - a brilliant amateur actor more emotionally coherent on the page or on stage than in life. As Nelly becomes the focus of Dickens’ passion and his muse, for both of them secrecy is the price, and for Nelly a life of “invisibility.”

LES INVISIBLESShowing from: Fri 28 FebTickets on sale: Now

Documentary. French language film with English subtitles. Eleven men and women born between the wars with nothing in common except their sexuality. Now in their 60s and 70s, they tell their personal stories, either shared or alone, revealing often pioneering lives through seven decades of experience. Director Sebastien Lifshitz offers us eleven personal portraits of gay and lesbian life from an older generation who often remain invisible and unheard in a youth-obsessed society. Winner of the Cesar Award for Best Documentary, and nominated for the BFI London Film Festival Grierson Award, it’s an affectionate but frank account that is in turn touching and amusing, offering an invaluable reminder of an overlooked area of our community at a time when we consider our own attitudes towards a growing elderly population.

HERShowing from: Fri 7 MarTickets on sale: Wed 26 Feb

Set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future, Her follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex man who makes his living writing personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” (Scarlett Johansson) a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature - and the risks - of intimacy in the modern world.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTELShowing from: Fri 7 MarTickets on sale: Wed 26 Feb

The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Streep), a modern woman living in present times is throwing a party for her friend Richard, a famous author dying of AIDS. These two stories are simultaneously linked to the work and life of Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman).

Having emerged successfully from the scene of the crime, he returns to retrieve a vital piece of evidence but finds himself trapped in a lift - increasingly desperate to escape before the police discover the victim’s body. Meanwhile, his lover Florence (Jeanne Moreau) is left to pace the streets of Paris, anxiously waiting and searching for him with no way of knowing what has happened. DALLASBUYERS CLUBShowing from: Fri 14 MarTickets on sale: Wed 5 Mar

Set in the late ’80s and based on a true story, Dallas Buyers Club sees Matthew McConaughey play Ron Woodroof, a carefree party animal whose life is rocked to the core when he contracts HIV from a one-night stand. As Ron faces up to his condition, he begins to explore the medical options available to him, finding out that not only is the US government actively preventing HIV patients from accessing certain treatments, but it is also colluding with the pharmaceutical industry to prescribe expensive and harmful ones. There are shades of Erin Brockovich in this David and Goliath story, but it’s a measure of his brilliance that director Jean-Marc Vallée keeps us guessing how it will play out. And McConaughey will surely be clearing some shelf space this awards season for a performance that will move viewers to tears, without resorting to sentiment or ever asking them for pity.

CUBAN FURYShowing from: Fri 14 MarTickets on sale: Wed 5 Mar

1987: A 13 year old natural born dancer with fire in his heels and snakes in his hips is working himself up to explode all over the UK Junior Salsa Championships. So it is that 22 years later, an adult Bruce Garrett (Nick Frost) finds himself out-of-shape and unloved - trapped in a downward spiral of self-pity, repression and Nando’s take-outs. Only Julia (Rashida Jones), his smart, funny, gorgeous new American boss, gives him a reason to live. Unknown to Bruce, Julia has issues all of her own and, luckily for him, she also has a secret passion. But then there’s Drew (Chris O’Dowd), his alpha male colleague and king-monkey of the office, determined to get in the way...

THE MONUMENTS MENShowing from: Fri 21 MarTickets on sale: Wed 12 Mar

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

UNDERTHE SKINShowing from: Fri 21 MarTickets on sale: Wed 12 Mar

A coolly striking brunette (Scarlett Johansson) drives a battered old van around Scotland seducing unremarkable men, whom she then despatches in a nightmarishly bizarre manner. Drawing on Michel Faber’s novel of the same name, Director Jonathan Glazer has created an eerie, dreamlike and visually compelling sci-fi horror that takes in themes of alienation, sexuality and loneliness. Johansson effortlessly holds our attention as the opaquely sinister alien, while sequences shot on the streets of Glasgow and using interactions with real passers-by add an element of authenticity that only heightens the strangeness.

STRANGER BY THE LAKEShowing from: Fri 21 MarTickets on sale: Wed 12 Mar

French language film with English subtitles. Handsome and naive cruiser Franck comes across Michel, a striking masculine and moustachioed figure, whilst swimming. He becomes infatuated and must seduce him at any cost. His desire is tested when one night he bears witness to a murder and, as a silent witness, must wrestle between his passion and his moral integrity. Stranger By The Lake is an original work that marks a new landmark in cinema. A provocative and original effort, it is an erotic mix of the comic and the tragic, deservedly winning Alain Guiraudie the Best Director for Un Certain Regard at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
