Everson Elementary parent-teacher conferences comes to

our Community Building This year, the staff of Everson Elementary is partnering with our Tribe to try

something different for the usual parent/student/teacher conferences held in November every year. This year our parent/student/teacher conferences for our Nooksack Tribal families will be held at the Nooksack Community Building, 2515 Sulwhanon Dr., on Dec. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. A dinner and dessert will be provided for all families that attend and the conferences will meet in different spaces set up at the Community Building. The principal, Kevin DeVere, is really looking forward to sharing a meal and holding these important parent meetings right in our Nooksack community! The school will be sending home information. For more information, call the school at (360) 966-2030. n

After School Program helps with homework, and fun!

The Education Department’s After School Youth Program’s tutors and homework helpers have been busy checking binders, encouraging students to show us their homework and helping students get their homework done. When the kids take advantage of the great services offered during this program, they have more time at home in the evenings to relax and spend time with family. We are here to help! Please encourage your children to do their homework with the staff here at the Youth Program so they can spend more time with you. We love it when the kids use our after school services. Fridays are reserved for free choice. We also have several art activities to choose from in the classroom. And, we show movies and enjoy a popcorn snack.

Every time a child does their homework here in the classroom they get an Excellent Slip, which enters them into a weekly drawing where they can be chosen for Star of the Week honors. Our Stars of the Week get to choose a toy from the classroom toy store, receive special computer privileges and choose a buddy to have popcorn with every day after school.

In addition to homework assistance, we also offer Nooksack Language classes, fitness classes, and Behavioral Health group sessions. Please join us if you haven’t already. If your child is currently participating, please ask them about their homework and other classroom activities. Ask about their day here at the program and be sure to give us your feedback. It’s our goal to make sure everyone who attends has a safe, educational and fun experience. For more information, contact the Education Department at (360) 966-2043. n

Roy Nicol and Chance Olson work smart and get their homework done.

Ravenia Solomon and Lucille Hughes get busy on homework assignments.

Nooksack Way of Life Program produces events, books, vegetables and helpful posters

Tribe hosts Gathering of Nations EventThe Health Department’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration program recently held an event

sponsored by the Gathering of the Native Americans (GONA). Over 30 participants, with 18 being Nooksack youth, attended throughout the three-day gathering. The group engaged in team-building activities, identified focuses of concern, and created goals for their group, families, and the local community. Afterward, SAMSHA sent a Prevention Specialist to the GONA facilitators’ training workshop in Alaska. They returned with curriculum that will be used when working with youth groups and prevention teen club gatherings. You’ll find photos from this event on this page and page 6.

Community gains 800 children’s books

The Tribe has received a grant that helped our community gain over 800 books from the Georgia Perez children’s book series: Through the Eyes of the Eagle, Knees Lifted High, Plate Full of Color, and Tricky Treats. The SAMSHA team was able to distribute books to the Local Women Infants and Children (WIC) program, Mount Baker and Nooksack School Districts; also the team made arrangements to come once a week to read out loud to the After School Program at Timber Ridge. Each child was given their own book during story time in order to read along and they took the book home to share with their families.

Community Garden produces pumpkins, vegetables

The Community Garden that we’ve developed was able to grow a few pumpkins and baskets full of vegetables. One large pumpkin with several squash were given the After School Program at Timber Ridge. Two small pumpkins were given to the Head Start programs in Everson and in Deming. These vegetables were planted and cared for by the Nooksack Way of Life youth and other youth summer programs.

New posters to support healthy choices

Soon, the SAMSHA Nooksack Way of Life Program will be launching a poster campaign. The pictures taken will be of Nooksack Tribal Members and community members engaged in either cultural, healthy life styles, or proactive activities. The message is for youth to identify with their Tribe, see people engaging in healthy choices, and notice that culture is prevention. The message will say Nooksack Way of Life is Prevention: I Empower My Nation Through Participation. When these posters are published, we intend to post them around school buildings, local offices, and on public bulletin boards. If you are willing to display posters in your work space please call us at (360) 966-7704 and we will deliver some to your office. On page 9 is a great example of with Tammy Woodrich-Cooper, who works with our Tribe on Vocational Rehabilitation and she’s also a storyteller.

SAMSHA department welcomes new community surveyors to the team

The SAMSHA program has hired two new employees who will help facilitate surveys to assist the Health Department in bettering programs that are offered.

Tony Gould, shown here with his son Teighan, is a graduate from Northwest Indian College and has been primarily employed for the Nooksack Tribe for most of his career. His work history ranges from working in the Education Department as a youth tutor to providing ample transportation for the Elders Program. He looks forward to continuing his professional career working within the Tribe and is excited to be working for the community at large.

Marcia Jimmy has lived in the Nooksack community for her entire life. She is a graduate from Northwest Indian College. Her most recent job experience revolves around working with Education Department at Timber Ridge. She is also looking forward to working with the community at large.

Jesse Madera teaches us about fire safety

Tribal Member Jesse Madera, who is our Tribe’s Maintenance Manager, is also a Whatcom County District 1 fire volunteer who often teaches communities and kids about fire safety and equipment, which he also did at this year’s Nooksack Days Celebration. We thank Jesse for all of the ways he serves our community!

Snow Plowing: A reminder from the Nooksack Tribal

Transportation DepartmentWith the winter months arriving, it’s time to talk about

keeping you and your family safe when the our Tribe’s snow plow is moving through your area. Our plow will service Tribal housing sites and Tribal Buildings. In extreme snow storms, we try to help where we can, as time allows.

Please Remember:

• Maintain a 25-foot distance from the snow removal equipment at all times.

• Remind children to stay far away from the snow plow at all times and not to build snow forts in the street. Visibility for the snow plow operator is often very limited.

• If possible, keep all vehicles off main roads. The snow plow is very wide and vehicles on the side of the road will hamper our ability to safely remove snow.

• If following the snow plow in your vehicle, keep plenty of distance between you and the snow plow as it is constantly moving debris and makes sudden and unpredictable stops and wide turns.

• Every effort will be made to keep berms at driveways to a minimum, but the plow operator is not responsible for removing berms from driveways or the center of the roadway.

Tribe hosts great Elder’s Luncheon

This year’s Elder’s luncheon was a success thanks to everyone that was able to join us for this annual event. An overwhelming number of gift baskets were donated for the raffle, and all the money that was raised from the raffle will be used to fund Elder’s travel on our trips. We appreciate all of the Casino staff and volunteers who helped with everything, from set up and take down to serving the Elders their meals. We enjoyed seeing everyone from near and far, and it was great to see these experiences bring smiles to so many! We look forward to next year’s annual Elder’s event. For more information, contact the Elders Program at (360) 592-0100.
