Then the phone rings, and Chris answers. She listens for a minute, puts the caller on hold, and tells me, “It’s the Secret Service calling, and they found a stray puppy on the highway by Cannonball.” Hmmm, that’s a first, I thought. It’s also a prank call, was my second thought. Then it clicked in, that President Obama was planning a visit to Cannonball the next day. It just might be true! I told Chris she better give the green light. When the Secret Service calls, something inside instructed me to cooperate. So Chris asks the caller if they can bring the dog tomorrow? The response was, “We are busy with an event tomorrow, Ma’am.” Of course they are! But, he said, he could have the dog at the shelter within the hour. Chris puts him on hold again and relays the message. By now the call has all our attention. I question Chris – why don’t they transport the dog in a helicopter, and by the look in her eyes I knew she did not want to have this conversation with whoever was on the other end of the phone. Fair enough, plus I am still not convinced the caller is not pulling our leg. So I took the phone and said, “Is this REALLY the Secret Service?” A very polite, “Yes Ma’am,” was the response from the Secret Service Agent (I’ll call him SSA). Ok, so the real President of the good ol’ USA did not actually call us. But a kind-hearted member of his Secret Service did!

June 12 was a long, busy day at CDHS. Nothing out of the ordinary really, and we were about 15 minutes away from closing up shop for the evening. Then the phone rings, and Chris answers. She listens for a minute, puts the caller on hold, and tells me, “It’s the Secret Service calling, and they found a stray puppy on the highway by Cannonball.”

Hmmm, that’s a first, I thought. SSA:”Yes, Ma’am.” Me: “Well, I am sure you did, there are 9,000 of them down there. You are not from here, are you?” SSA: “No ma’am, I’m from______.” (We are keeping this part a secret!)

Me: “Ok, but I know you have a helicopter and you can get the dog here in 15 minutes and I have four acres you can land on!” SSA: “Yes ma’am, I do have a helicopter but I can’t use it for this. But I have a minivan and I can be there in 45 minutes and I know you are about to close but this dog is really cute and I’d really like to help her find a great home.”

Ok, I was starting to like this guy and began thinking that maybe he was not messing with us. So, I agreed to stay until he could get the dog to our door, and Chris decided she just had to stay after hours too, just to see how this all turned out!

Sure enough, about an hour later here arrives a minivan as described, and an exceptionally polite, casually dressed man steps out with a big grin on his face and said, “She slept all that way here. What a great girl!”

As he turned to lift the dog out of the passenger seat, the holstered sidearm and badge left little doubt that this guy was who he said he was, and not pulling our leg after all! So this is how Gracie (our new Secret Service friend named her on their drive) came to reside at CDHS!

We gave our new SSA friend a CDHS T-shirt. Had I been thinking, we should have sent another one to the President too! Oh, well. He in turn gave us both a Secret Service medallion and thanked us profusely for staying late and helping him with his little charge. Since he was obviously a dog lover, I asked him how many dogs he had at home and he grinned and said, “Three.” I told you I liked him!

When he first found the puppy, he called his wife at their home thousands of miles away and asked her to locate a shelter, and obviously she found us and gave him our contact info. He promised to send CDHS a donation, and he has since done that, plus sent a couple of Texas Roadhouse gift certificates to Chris and I! How nice is that? While his duties must take him away from home for long periods of time and be incredibly stressful to boot, he still took the time to care about a stray dog alongside a highway in rural North Dakota. I guess there isn’t such a thing as an ordinary day in this business. Extraordinary people remind me of that all the time!

Helping pets and people with our PET FundCDHS has started a new fund – the PET Fund. PET stands for Providing Emergency TLC.

We will have $1,500 in the budget every year for this fund that will be used to help community members when they have a pet-related emergency. For example, last summer a woman ended up in a local homeless shelter, but could not take her animal there. We housed the animal for about a month until she could reclaim her pet. Another example, during the flood of 2010, we took in a few animals for owners that could not stay in their homes – until the flood waters had receded and they were able to go back home.

Other examples of use for these funds would include a disaster such as a fire, where people lost their belongings and needed to replace their pet supplies; or, possibly a person who became ill or injured and needed a pet sitter to provide for their pet for a few days. With our PET fund, we would be able to help with partial costs on those types of situations.

Although the amount is not large, we want to help the pets and people in our community. If you are interested in contributing to the fund, please mark your donation with “PET Fund.”

Focus On All Fours3Doing great things for pets and people.

If you have been to the shelter lately, you have noticed a change to our landscape. A 30 x 50 concrete slab, framing, trusses, air hammers, construction guys, the whole bit. Yes, we still plan to eventually move to our Yegan Road property in Bismarck. We have some money to raise before that becomes a reality, so for now we need to go on with business as usual at our current location.

It has yet to be decided if we will keep this property, as well as Yegan Road, or if we will eventually sell this property. Either way, we must continue to provide services at our Mandan facility to the best of our ability.

The former “basement house” that we gutted and currently use for storage flooded this Spring, and coupling that with its advanced age, deterioration and those dangerous concrete steps, that building is not worth saving! The annual Rummage Sale we hold every August has grown to mammoth proportions, and we need LOTS of storage for your donations prior to the event. Plus, we have ongoing storage needs for shelter records, pet food, pet taxis, lawn equipment, etc., and our garage will not hold it all.

We decided that adding this new structure is a definite enhancement to this property, whether we keep it or sell it. We arranged for Eagle Rigid Span to construct this simple, yet much needed storage building, and will soon be happy to fill it with your rummage sale donations and other storage items.

I have to tell you, because our current office/cat building is in such poor shape, having a second solid structure nearby should we have a catastrophic failure of our cat facility provides some peace of mind too. While we have gotten by for many years in a building held together with zip ties and duct tape, we had little choice but to invest in the Mandan property at this time. We are striving to meet the demand for the services we provide, and those requests come to us by the dozens every day. We provide these services due to our donors generosity, and survive solely with our communities continued support.

Updating our shelter grounds

Capital Campaign Update The Central Dakota Humane Society is working diligently on our capital campaign to build a

new shelter. We have hired Jim Miller, from the Miller Group in Fargo as our Campaign Coordinator. He will help us to conduct preliminary feasibility study work, develop a list of interviewees, finalize our case statement and other assistance as we need it.

We would all love to move into a new building tomorrow, but we are finding there is much more involved in conducting a capital campaign than we anticipated. We want to do it right so we are being careful. We can do this….with your help.

Surrendering A PetIf you feel you can no longer keep your

pet:• Ask friends, family, relatives, co-

workers and anybody you know to help get the word out that you are looking for a home for your pet. There is a good chance that somebody might know somebody who knows somebody, and so on, who is looking for a pet. It will be a much smoother transition for your pet to move from your home into a new home versus going to a homeless animal shelter.

• Put an ad in the newspaper. Remember, you don’t have to give your dog away to the first person who answers the ad. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, or even ask to see where your pet would be living. Use your best judgment when interviewing potential new owners, and go with your gut feeling about people.

• Place a giveaway ad on www.bismanonline.com.

• Make giveaway flyers to hang around town. Ask store owners if you may place flyers in their store. Try to post flyers in high traffic locations - grocery stores, animal supply stores, veterinary clinics and gas stations, for example.

• Call your local humane society. Try to use this as a last resort. Owner-surrendered animals have a harder time adjusting to shelter life, and in many cases, become depressed or develop anxiety.

Your Pet’s Welfare:Please remember, you made a promise

to your pet when you took it into your home. Your pet has provided you with a gift of love, and although there are sometimes circumstances beyond our control, you owe it to your companion animal to ensure they are in good hands for the remainder of their life.

Central Dakota Humane Society 4 Bismarck-Mandan’s No-Kill Shelter

You may have seen the recent media coverage about The Summer Trio – a group of Mandan girls who decided to do some fundraising over the summer. They set up a kool-aid and cookie stand and in only two hours raised more than $300. And, what’s even better for us, they decided to donate the money to CDHS! What an awesome gift.

I continue to be amazed at the charity of our community’s children. These three girls are a great example. They could have easily kept the money they raised for themselves, but they decided someone else needed it more than they did.

The shelter receives letters all the time from young kids, complimenting us on what we do, and including small amounts of money. It may only be $3, or even just $.75, but it’s what they felt they could give. We appreciate every letter and monetary gift. Every bit is used to help the animals in our care.

Every school year, we have classes full of children visit the shelter with needs list items. We have church youth groups send us letters with donations of money. We have Girl Scouts making blankets for the pets. It’s obvious that these kids work hard to contribute to the shelter. They plan their fundraising events, advertise them and they carry out the events. They collect the money or needs list items and they deliver them to the shelter. It’s a lot of work.

There are children who accept donations to the shelter rather than get birthday presents, kids who hold lemonade stands and donate their earnings, and kids who collect spare change on the ground to help the animals.

The kids in school and church do all kinds of events: hat days, used book sales, rummage sales, bake sales, charity days, lollipop sales, recycling cans. We must also thank the teachers and group leaders who contribute a lot of creativity, dedication and generosity to these events. Their guidance is what helps the kids understand the value of charitable giving.

We are truly blessed to live in a community that puts value in giving back to others. If this generation of young people is an example of what our future holds, it will be a bright future indeed.

Thank you to the St. A’s Health Info Management Department for their very generous donation.

Thanks to the Mandan Middle School Wranglers Team. They sent a great donation to CDHS. You guys rock!

Lewis and Clark Grade School students sent CDHS a nice donation from their can recycling project. Thank you!!!

CDHS received funds from the BSC Jean’s Day fund. Whoop! Whoop!

Thank you to Alyssa Fortney. She accepted donations for CDHS for her birthday instead of getting gifts for herself. Such an awesome gesture for the critters!

What an amazing group of fifth-grade students in Julie Seifert’s class at Shiloh. They raised more than $825 with their rummage sale project and donated it to CDHS. High five!

The fifth-grade students in Mrs. Clarke’s class at Roosevelt Elementary in Mandan donated their gum day proceeds to CDHS. By paying one quarter for gum every Friday, the kids get to have gum. One quarter at a time, they raised more than $65 for the animals. Amazing!

Thank you to the Simle SADD group for their donation of supplies and cash. Another amazing group of young people helping animals.

The Fort Lincoln Elementary Student Council raised more than $310 with their bake sale. Yet again, proof that we have amazing kids in our community who are willing to work hard and help out those in need.

The employees of Gate City Bank participated in an internal employee “90 Acts of Caring.” From this great event, CDHS received donations of dog, cat, office and miscellaneous shelter supplies. Thank you so much for caring!

Capital Credit Union to the rescue

Capital Credit Union is currently conducting the Loan Rescue Community Challenge. Go to Capital Credit Union and refinance your outstanding loans. They will work to get you a better interest rate and save you money. When they reach their goal of $500,000 in saved interest for their members, CCU will donate to local charities and CDHS is one of them! You get to elect the charity you want the donation to go to, so be sure to pick CDHS!

Mandy’s CornerBy Mandy Schaaf, Volunteer and Event Coordinator

Summer is here, kids are out of school and a summer vacation is hopefully on your calendar! We do have a few more important dates for you to mark on your calendar. Our Furry Freestyle and Family Fun Day at Raging Rivers WaterPark in Mandan is Sunday, Sept. 7. After that, make plans to attend our annual Shaggy Shuffle walk for the animals on Sunday, Sept. 21. This event will be at the State Capitol in Bismarck and is one of our biggest fundraisers. Both of these events require the assistance of our great and hardworking volunteers and we’d like you to share your ideas on how we can make the most of both of these events. Even if you haven’t volunteered at either of these events previously, what are you waiting for? If you’d like to get involved in either or both events just give me a call at the shelter or email me at [email protected] and I’ll let you know how you can help!

Another opportunity for you to assist CDHS is during our Annual Dog Days Deals Rummage Sale. We will be setting up for this event on Wednesday, Aug. 13, starting at about 8:30 a.m. at the shelter. The rummage sale will be Aug.

14 through August 16. CDHS was lucky enough to have our rummage sale set-up selected as one of the projects for the Missouri Slope Area United Way Day of Caring. If you aren’t familiar with this important community day celebrating volunteerism, every year projects requiring volunteer assistance are submitted to United Way for consideration. United Way then recruits hundreds of volunteers who sign up on the United Way website and select the project they are interested in helping out with. CDHS generally has about 50 volunteers (this includes our volunteers who I contact), as well as many, many other community minded helpers. If you are signed up with CDHS as a volunteer and would like to help with the setup of the rummage sale you can either offer your services by contacting me or by going to the United Way website at volunteerbisman.com and clicking on the Day of Caring tab located in the orange toolbar at the top of the page. You can then scroll down the page until you get to the Central Dakota Humane Society project. If you sign up through United Way you will receive a free t-shirt

for your help. We will be providing a yummy lunch for all the volunteers during the Day of Caring and Captain Freddy’s is providing drinks and food starting at 4 p.m. All volunteers (including youth) can attend this fun after party!!

Last, but not least, if you are a critter companion, don’t forget to mark your calendar to come out to CDHS at least once a week and visit our lovable pets at the shelter. Remember, even in the summer our shelter pets still need socialization and our dogs need to be walked. Just a few hours a week can mean the world to a shelter dog or cat. And if you haven’t gone through the dog walking class or a kitty orientation, mark your calendar for Aug. 9 or Sept. 13 to attend one of our free orientation sessions.

Thanks for all you do for CDHS and have a great summer!

Tails of Success

GeorgeHere is George having sweet dreams with his baby duck!

AnnaAnna is doing wonderful in our

home. Although she is blind, she knows her way around the house without bumping into very many things. In fact, about the only time is when she gets in a hurry. She gets along very well with our other three dogs and we love her dearly. She is pretty much potty-trained and only has a few accidents. She has bonded well with both of us and life wouldn’t be the same without her. Thank you for saving this precious dog.

CarterMy family decided to give up Starbucks for Lent this year and

instead set aside the money they would have spent and give it to two worthy organizations. It didn’t take much for me to convince them that Central Dakota Humane Society should be one of the organizations.

Thank you for taking care of me when I was sick. And thank you for taking care of so many other animals. My best friend, Henry, thanks you too. Oh yeah, and my family – Mark, Lynae, Madelyn and Ternes.

LollipopWe are so lucky to have been able to adopt Lollipop! We have

shortened her name to Lolli. She has been a wonderful addition to our family. She is such a beggar and is too cute to resist. She is great with people, and is learning to play with her new sister, Nia, who is a toy poodle. Potty training was a challenge for a short while; there were a few accidents. One morning she has an accident on our bed and I told her I was going to give her back to Sue. She looked at me with those big eyes and I told her I was kidding! She gives the best kisses, and loves to snuggle. We love her very much!

SteubenGreetings from Steuben! He is

doing wonderful. He is the most playful cat ever and has really opened up to all of us. He is friendly with the kids and so playful and loving. He has many toys he loves to play with. Steuben is such a big cuddle bug at nighttime. He loves to roam the entire house and is such a good cat. He is getting pretty big already. I’m glad that we got to adopt him and give him a wonderful home that he loves.

Please help BayleeBy Sue BuchholzPhoto by Jolene Podoll

Baylee is a three-year-old female Yellow Lab who came to us as an owner surrender due to not getting along with their other dog. When we later obtained her medical history, we learned that Baylee had seen a veterinarian months prior for a leg injury, something that we were not informed about. However, no further treatment was given to her at that time.

So we made an appointment with Dr. Tom Bettenhausen at Pinehurst Animal Hospital to give his expert opinion on exactly what her condition is now, and what we can do to fix it. The diagnosis was that not just one knee was diagnosed with CCR, or Cranial Cruciate Rupture, but that one is completely ruptured, and the second knee is most likely soon to follow! Then those tendons will break, and the joint will be completely bone on bone. Of course, this will make any movement very painful!

Baylee is a very happy, sweet dog, and we will do all we can to give this girl a pain-free life. There is no good age to spend the rest of your life in pain, and Baylee is still a young dog with a long life ahead of her. The corrective surgery she requires to fix this problem permanently is a bone plate to stabilize the joint, and after she is healed she should be a much happier dog! The surgery is expensive, and the rehab takes a few months, but we know that Baylee is worth every effort on our part to give her a happy life from here on out. She will have surgery on both legs at the same time, and Dr. Bettenhausen has agreed once again to work with us to discount the cost of the surgeries. Our goal is to raise $4,000 to complete this mission, and as our supporters always do, we know we will reach this goal and make this happen. Our newsletter reaches a lot of people, and if everyone reading this chips in a little, it will be a painless way for all of us to relieve Baylee’s pain! It’s a win for all! We will keep you posted on her progress. Please earmark your donations in Baylee’s name, and we thank you so much on her behalf.

JorgeJorge Costanza has became quite

an accomplished cat in the few short years that she has lived with us. She can distinctively tell the difference between a tuna can and any other sort of can being opened. She is undefeated at foot races up and down the stairs (though some have come within whiskers of beating her). Lastly, she holds the record for most consecutive days getting a nap in on the couch. We couldn’t imagine our house without this family member.

RascalOur pooch, “a Bismarck

stray,” came to us from CDHS in the fall of 2005. The staff estimated our puppy would weigh 50 pounds when full grown, but he actually weighs about 90 pounds. He’s a mutt to be sure – we figure part lab, shepherd and/or border collie. Rascal is very friendly and likes to use his big waggy tail to introduce himself to any stranger he sees. But now and then he acts tough too. He’s very protective of his “mom,” and sorta goes ballistic whenever another dog walks by. We sometimes call him Rowdy or Psycho Dog because he’ll grab a toy and vigorously shake it until the passing dog has left the neighborhood. He really is a smart dog and knows lots of tricks. We are sure he could out-fetch just about any dog in Bismarck/Mandan. And he knows lots of words too. He starts growling if we tell him he needs a “bath.” And he runs to the door hoping for a ride if he hears the word “pickup.” Rascal has been a good friend to our family.

The Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Network spent the evening of Wed. July 9th sprucing up the grounds at CDHS. Some of the YPN members attended a special dog walking class to learn about CDHS and our volunteer dog walker policies and procedures while some went straight to work trimming trees, pulling weeds, putting down mulch and cleaning up the shelter grounds. Much like a makeover show, YPN provided 16 hard-working volunteers who labored and made quick work of a number of projects that would have taken all summer to accomplish. CDHS is so grateful for the hard work and helpful attitude that this enthusiastic group of volunteers seems to take where ever they go. CDHS has been lucky enough to be the non profit for the year that YPN chose to assist with projects like this as well as other fund raisers and volunteer tasks. We are a little sad they will now be moving on to support another worthy non-profit organization but know we have developed some lasting relationships that will benefit CDHS long after 2013-2014.

ABUSE AND NEGLECTUnfortunately animal abuse and neglect is still very much a

problem in our society. If you see a group of kids kicking a cat, if your neighbor’s dog is left outside with no shelter, food or water, if you suspect an animal may be suffering from abuse or neglect, please don’t hesitate to speak on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.

Report abuse and neglect to:• Animal Control (Bismarck 223-1212 and Mandan 667-3455),• County Sheriff (Burleigh 222-6651 and Morton 667-3330),• State Veterinarian (328-2654 or 328-2655), or• Central Dakota Humane Society (667-2020) or your local

animal shelter or law enforcement. To report abuse or neglect and remain anonymous, call 701-

224-TIPS (8477).We at CDHS share the frustrations of many people who call to

report abuse or neglect. In North Dakota, humane organizations do not have legal jurisdiction. We do not have the authority to investigate complaints or remove animals from bad situations. We must report complaints of abuse or neglect to local law enforcement.

Be a Hero:Report animal abuse and neglect as well as injured or stray

animals. You may prevent suffering or even save a life. Indeed, you may be the only one who can.

Spay or Neuter ... One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in seven years.

One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in six years. An estimated eight to ten million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each

year. Millions are abandoned, only to suffer from illness or injury before dying. It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated $2 billion a year to round up, house,

euthanize and dispose of homeless animals. As many as 25% of dogs entering shelters each year are purebreds.Approximately 55% of dogs and puppies and 71% of cats and kittens entering

shelters are killed, based on reports from 1,038 facilities across America.Every unspayed/unneutered pet potentially contributes to the problem. Please

spay or neuter your pet for their health and safety and to assure a better world for pets and humans alike. Every litter hurts!

By Sue Buchholz • Photos by Jolene PodollPhoenix came to us May 27, a single, stray kitten found near Lincoln. She was about eight

weeks old, sick, weak, bone-thin, and her eyes were severely infected and matted completely shut. She was so flat and boney, she reminded me of a dead bird. If I was forced to make a wager that day, I‘m afraid I would have hesitated to bet this kid would even survive. Over the years, though, these animals have taught us many things, and we were not about to count her out.

We were off to the vet immediately, where Dr. Barb Espe at Heart River Animal Hospital began to work her magic. Antibiotics, eye medications and syringe feeding began that day, and every day after for quite some time. Phoenix was always a good eater, which improved her body condition in short order, but those nasty eyes were our biggest worry. Appearing grossly swollen with icy blue/grey backgrounds, it was a long time before we could even tell if she had eyeballs left at all.

Slowly she improved, and as she did we changed her meds. Antibiotic for a time, then a steroid for a time. Antibiotic “a”, followed by antibiotic “b” ten minutes later, on and on and guess what? Eyes appeared. Badly scarred eyes, but eyes. We could tell she had limited vision. That, along with her feisty will to live made us push on. Another med change, and guess what? The scars began to get smaller and smaller. Like a roller coaster cresting its highest peak, the last phase of her healing came rushing at us at top speed, and daily we could see the scarring on her corneas getting smaller. To everyone’s total amazement, today we have a new and improved Phoenix. You have to look at the progression photos to really believe this incredible transformation actually took place. The end result today looks like she has had completely normal eyes her entire life. No scars at all. Perfect vision. How cool is that! Phoenix, you go girl!
