Fundulus grandis grandis Spawning a Giant- by Joe Doyle

One evening had a knock at the door. Fish friends from the north had stopped by to see what new fish I was working with. I was handed a bag of fish as my guests entered. Was told they were collected in a ditch behind a new housing plan north of Tampa Florida. Fundulus grandis grandis was the species, also known as the Gulf Killie, a big killifish. They were about 3 and a half inches in size, about half full grown. Two females and a male. Was told they were probably big enough to spawn, but hadn't seem any signs. Set up the trio in a 10 gallon fish tank, sponge filter, floating mop, and a tablespoon of baking soda per 5 gallons to make water hard. No heater added since it was summer and secured a tight fitting lid. Being wild fish use to living outside, I really wasn't sure how they would react to aquarium life. They ended up constantly trying to jump out, even with the lid on the tank. Fed the group frozen blood worms, frozen mysis shrimp, frozen adult brine shrimp, spirulina flake, liver flake, tetra min flake, black worm pellets, shrimp pellets, everything I tried they ate with voraciously. Found one egg in the mop after a week, which I moved to a deli cup full of water from parents tank. 2nd week no eggs. Thought I'd try a different setup with the mop and tie the mop with rubber

bands in 3 spots evenly spaced. Found 12 eggs after one week. 18 after second week. As time went on, the largest batch of eggs laid in the mop measured 35. Eggs took a good month to hatch. Tried incubating eggs on damp coconut fiber for a month, which didn't work out too well. Best hatch rate was achieved with wet incubation. In their natural habitat, the water in the ditch would drop in the evening and raise again in the morning following the cycle of low tide and high tide, exposing the eggs every day to the elements and rewetting. Wasn't quite sure how to recreate this senario. The eggs were extremely resilient and tough. kept fungus eggs out of the container as bad eggs turned solid white. Let some batches sit up to 5 days without water changes, just before hatching. Had no effect, all the eggs hatched. Very prolific fish. The fry were fed micro worm size food for the first week, then offered bbs. Fry grew fast. Raised multiple batches together for up to a month. The fry were a tan sand color and blended in to match the backgound. They reached 3/4" in a month, and 1" and a quarter in 2 months. Very hardy little fry. Passed on the adults to another breeder. Maximum size on these fish are 7". Saw a full size 7" live specimen at the American Killifish Association (AKA) in Denver. Was so big! Had to get rid of my trio before they got that big. Horticulture Award Program

Submissions for November 2016Tom Heisler: Anubias barteri Var. minima - Flowering 20 pts.

Target Fish Breeder Report Skiffia francesae is a golden goodeid that’s entertaining to observe in the aquarium. As they are a target fish, they are diminishing in the wild. Once the Skiffia are on a diet of live and frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. The courting ritual of the males showing dominance over another as they shimmy to set a stance, then they chase the females. After about 6 weeks, the female Skiffia body squares up, after 8 weeks nearing delivery. Before the fry are delivered it is best to offer guppy grass for them as a hiding spot. The fry where offered golden pearls to eat. Water Temperature of 75-80° F is a factor in breeding, they also prefer slow water movement. Renae Johnson
