NEWS

CIMA May 2009 exam resultsWe are very pleased to note that the global pass rates for both of the managerial level management accounting papers, P1, Performance Evaluation, and P2, Decision Management showed good increases when compared with previous exam diets. Also at managerial level, papers P5, Integrated Management and paper P7, Financial Accounting and Tax Principles both showed improved pass rates. However, the global pass rates for papers P4, Organisational Management and Information Systems and P8 Financial Analysis dipped slightly from previous diets. The pass rates for strategic level and for TOPCIMA remained broadly similar to previous diets.

There have been some excellent student performances from around the world, proving that dedication and study can produce exemplary results, with four international prize winners. We are very proud to have an international prize winner from Hong Kong, Mr Wong Yim Fai from Jardine Matheson Ltd for Paper 1, congratulations!

Complaints against individual members and registered studentsOver the past three years, the number of complaints received by CIMA against individual members and registered students has risen quite markedly and these are managed through the disciplinary process by the Professional Conduct team at London HQ.

These complaints come to CIMA from a variety of sources, but mainly from employers of in-house management accountants; clients of management accountants in private practice; members of the general public; persons acting in a public capacity (such as the police, insolvency services and other accountancy institutes ) and, CIMA itself also takes forward complaints.

The nature and type of complaint can vary quite considerably and the Institute’s Byelaws require that these are promptly, thoroughly and fairly investigated via the disciplinary process in order to protect the public, maintain confidence in the profession and uphold proper standards of conduct. They also require that appropriate sanctions are imposed if a complaint is upheld.

The starting point in defining a complaint is the concept of 'misconduct' as set out in Byelaw section 1(x) and more widely addressed and illustrated in contextual terms in the Code of Ethics. The current categories of complaint reflect the range and scope of the allegations which are considered by the independent conduct committees (Investigation, Disciplinary and Appeal) and include breach of fiduciary duty; criminal conviction; failure to deal professionally with a client or employer’s affairs – or with the public; failure to respond appropriately to a superseding accountant; use of unfair methods whilst sitting a CIMA examination; misrepresentation of qualifications; and, behaviour unbefitting a CIMA member or registered student.

CIMA does not, however, intervene in service issues or in commercial or contractual disputes between a member and a client.
