Elderly of a Village Development Committee (VDC) of Okhaldunga district
deprived of Old Age Allowance (OAA) since a year after the VDC was merged
within a municipality. Elderly expressed their agony over the negligence of staff
that deprived them of OAA. This was revealed in an interaction programme
organized by District office of Women and Children, and Senior Citizens
Association.

Difficulty to Receive OAA

Senior citizens of Jaleswor-1, Mahottari and Saptari districts are compelled to
queue up for hours to receive their Old Age Allowance (OAA) through bank.
One of the many, Gazadhar Mukhiya, 85, said “it is very difficult to stand in line
for hours”. He further opined that the earlier system of providing OAA at the
door of each recipient was better. The government has introduced OAA
payment through bank to avoid corruption and irregularities in disbursement
of the allowances.

Mahalaxmi municipality of Lalitpur district decided to provide additional Rs.
500 from its fund to the resident seniors of the Municipality. The sum is in
addition to Rs. 2000 that seniors receive from the central government. Newly
elected mayor, Mr. Rameshwor Shrestha, made this decision on the first
meeting of the elected representatives of the municipality.
Similarly, according to Kantipur Daily news, the newly elected chairman, Mr.
Man Bahadur G.C. and vice-chairwoman, Ms. Manju Devi Gurung of Pokhara-
Lekhnath Municipality also decided to add 10% to OAA for resident elders of
the municipality. The chairman and vice chairman announced three major
decisions including this, during the oath taking ceremony.

Recently elected representatives of Bhaktapur municipality decided to provide
Social Security Allowance (SSA) at home of the recipient. This decision was
taken on the demand of recipients. The government provides SSA to child,
people with different ability, indigenous group including older people.

still working hard to earn their square meals. They earn Rs. 100,000 yearly by
rearing goats. Nowadays, the couple are busy living active life with their 31
goats.

Bishnu Prasad Adhikari, 76, is a successful and well known farmer of Bhojpur
district. Local farmers see Mr. Adhikari, more commonly known as “Khursani
Baje” (Chilly pa in English), as their guardian. He earns Rs. 700,000 yearly by
farming vegetables and fruits. “I spent my whole life in farm. I feel comfortable
in this occupation. The government should promote agriculture to end
unemployment among young generation” he said.

The elderly residing in Pashupati Old Age Home (OAH)-the only OAH operated
by Nepal Government, became a central point for attraction as voters in the
local election. So, candidates from different political parties visited the OAH to
impress the elderly for vote. There are more than 200 elderly in the OAH.

Centenarians exercised their franchise in
various districts of the nation in the first
phase of local level election, which was
held after nearly two decades.
Batuli Lamichhane, 15; Tulasi Kumari
Khatri, 104; Nanda Bahadur Paudel, 105;
were some of the many centenarians who voted in the local level elections in
Nuwakot district.
According to Gorkhapatra daily many centenarians of Lumjung district also
casted their votes. The oldest lady of the district, Kausila Bogati, 122, also
voted in the election.

Nonagenarian Establishes Fund for Literature

A well-known nonagenarian social worker of Kailali district, Mr. Badrinath
Bhandari, established Fund for Literature on the occasion of his 92th birthday.
The fund is the largest fund of Far Western Nepal in literary sector.

Chandra Maya BK, 86, of Thakre Rural Municipality of Dhading district is
elected as a candidate from the Dalit Quota. Karna Bahadur Khadka, 80, is
elected as a ward chairperson in Tripura Sundari Rural Municipality of
Sindhupalchok district. Similarly, Harka Maya Rumba, 61, of Makwanpur is
elected as vice chairperson. The news revealed that their activeness and
commitment for welfare of older persons are the key reasons for their success.

Woes of the VDC

Older people of a Village Development Committee (VDC) of Jajarkot district
expressed their concerned over being ignored by government programmes
and political agendas. Kharka Bahadur Khatri, 80, shared that there is no
electricity, road, heath post, school and any other basic facility in his VDC.
Locals, including elderly demanded that these issues of the district must be
raised in the local election. The VDC is one of the most affected VDC of the
district by the decade long Maoists insurgency.
Corruption in OAH Suspected

The roof of Birateshwor Old Age Home (OAH) in Biratnagar, Morang district
leaked within a year of its inauguration. The sudden development of leak in a
recently built roof has sparked suspicions of corruption. The OAH was
established with a total budget of approximately 150,000 USD granted by Lions
Club International, Lions Club Biratnagar Central and Lions Club Biratnagar
Shubham.
