TRAIL MANNERS

Good manners is the grease that helps people get along with each other, avoiding friction. UNDER 16 MUST WEAR A HELMET. Be aware of the effect your actions have on oth-

ers, their horses and their property. Do not upset your co-riders’ horses. Ride at a quiet, controlled pace. NEVER PASS OTHERS AT A GALLOP. Keep a safe distance… don’t crowd others. STAY WITH A DISMOUNTED RIDER Respect the property of others. (ie: lawns, farm

fields, crops, groves, livestock, etc.) Leave gates as you found them: Open gates

should remain open. Closed gates should remain closed.

DO NOT PASS THE TRAIL BOSS or drop behind the drag rider.

Stay with the trail boss on the same side of the road. Do not split the road.

Clean up after your horse. Pick up manure or spread it depending on where you are. Do not clean your trailers out when you unload.

NO PROFANITY AT ANY SFTR EVENTS. REMEMBER! If you mind your manners others won’t mind when you and your horse return to ride.

HORSE CHARITIES

The SFTR donates to these charities once a year. These charities are badly in need of donations. Please try to send what you can to help them. Thanks from the SFTR.

SUNSHINE REPORT

and Michelle Byriel from an emergency appendectomy – good to have heard such good news and seen you at re-cent events! On a cheerful note, Carol Weng has a new 9yr old palo-mino named Paris. Can't wait to see her out on the trail and in our parades on such a fine looking horse! We also must announce there is another mule soon to be on the trails, as we welcome Leroy. Kuddos to Sandy & Jason Heminger for making Leroy feel immediately loved and happy on their farm in Davie! Locally, Gisela Alvarez welcomed a new pup, Bruno; Ralph Gonzalez now has a new foal, India's Imperial Legacy; and Jennifer Dyke's mare Cricket finally deliv-ered little Maddie. Still touch & go at the vet hospital, please send a prayer or positive thought in her direction, and know there is a Fb Go-Fund me so we may help our long-time friend from Robbie's Feed & Supply, with the ever-mounting bills. Any help would be appreciated! Send me cheerful news & info for members who could use a ray of sunshine!~Anna Kleinholz

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Trail Riders,

It has been my absolute honor and pleasure to serve as the President of the South Florida Trail Riders. Thanks to all of your support, this year has been one to re-member. To all the Board Members, Committees and everyone who helped make this year a hit, I am grateful for your efforts to turn every event into a stunning success. The friendships we have developed will only continue to grow beyond this year. Over the past two years, our Toy Drive has grown significantly thanks to our partnership with Keg South. I give my appreciation to Matt and Tiffany for their continuous support and extend my thanks to their entire crew. I would like to see The Trail Riders show support back during their time of need in true Trail Rider Fashion. I would also like to thank Vina and Sons for their commitment to our community events. Their generosity has always gone above and beyond all expectations. We have also expanded our outreach throughout the community. The Hurricane Stall Committee came together during Hurricane Irma and provided exceptional organization to help accommodate all members during this crisis. Lastly, I would like to thank my lovely wife for her patience, support and in-volvement. This year has been more enjoyable and we accomplished all this to-gether. Let us continue to push forward, taking our message and mission to new heights. I know that the future is bright. I will continue to be involved with the club and will see you on the trail.

Regards,

Nelson Rodriguez President

MARCH 31ST 2018 VIRGINIA KEY BEACH RIDE

We had a beautiful day for a perfect beach

ride. Almost 20 trailers with close to 50 horses and lots and lots of people. Everybody seems to have a great time. Unfortunately, we didn't

get so many pictures except from Robyn An-derson and crew that posted them on Facebook. I must give so much credit to the people that

have done the preparation and pick up for this event, it is sooooo much work. Augie, Andrea, Wayne and Henry, my cowboy hat is off to

you. I am very lucky to have had lots of help. Carrie Hershberger took care of check in for

over two hours comparing names to our regis-tration list at the gate of everyone coming in. Bill Goodwin and Colby Stroud arrived with

me at 7:15am to help setup all the cones, signs. hoses and the plastic orange fence. Then they stayed to the very end to help pick up all the

manure and trash and all that other stuff.. All the walking back and forth to the beach and all

over the huge parking area. Boy, it's great to

have friends. A huge Thank You to Carrie, Bill and Colby. Oh and thank you to Robyn and friends for all

the great pictures.

~Mike Maldonado

This year’s Parade of the Horse Breeds was produced by the South Florida Trail Riders for the second consecutive year. Members and friends rode 12 horses featuring Ap-paloosas, American Quarter Horses, Friesian crosses, Belgian Draft, Quarter Horse/Percheron Crosses, Paso Finos, American Miniature Horse, and a Shetland Cross Pony. We kicked-off the day’s equine events by Presenting the Colors for the National Anthem. The Anthem was sung by singer/songwriter Valerie Marie Alonso. This seventh grader is a gifted singer as well as a gifted stu-dent taking all AP courses. We started The Parade of Breeds with a grand entrance by all the horses. After exiting, riders came back one by one. While our announcer, Luisa Fernanda Escudero, read a description of the breed, its uses, both historical and present day, the riders showed their mounts at all their gaits. The crowd loved us and stayed around for about 40 minutes to see and touch the horses after our performance. Countless photos of our horses and riders were taken by adults and children who could not get enough of the horses.

The success of this event was a result of the great team effort put together by the following people who either rode a horse or were crucial on the ground to maintain safe conditions at all times. They are: Bonny George, Jr. Co-Chair along with me Susan Boyd, Jaylin Dorado, Victoria Dunleavy, Luisa Fernanda Escudero, Dorys Fernandez, Eddie Garcia, Bill Good-win, Anna Kleinholz, Ginger Krenz, Mike Maldonado, Lydia McDaniel, Phyllis McGrath, Emily Morgan, Lisa Morgan, Bradley Swigert, Eva Marie Tracy, Lynn Styne. I would also like to thank Carol and Gina who oversee all equestrian events at the Miami-Dade Youth Fair, for inviting us and for their unconditional support of the South Florida Trail Riders and the Miami-Dade County horse families.

AROUND THE PADDOCK... BEAUTIFUL WEATHER BRINGS ON GREAT ACTIVITIES!

Around the Paddock – The Temperature & Activity Levels are on the Rise!

Justin de Jesus took time from his baseball team games to com-pete at Lady Lake, Horse in the Park show at Grand Oaks. The youngest among seventeen entries, Justin placed 2nd in 2ft jumps. Justin & Reeses - are quite a pair! In the cutting world JC Vina on Tuff won 1st in the 15K class; and Lynn Vina took 3rd in 35K non-pro with a clean run. They fell just out of the money in Select non-pro. Come to our next general meeting and get them to tell you all about the excitement! Alani Lopez is the 2018 Fla. State All-Around Gymnastics Champion!!! Having tumbled her way through an amazing sea-son, Alani recently won the the honor in the Lakeland, Fla. State Champs. We congratulate Alani on a successful season, applaud Rolando, Leyanes & Yelani for supporting her pursuits and are so very proud of Alani for her talent, skill, & grace. Congratulations to Jose Penabella who won a photo contest from Fla. Country Magazine, with his early sunrise pasture shot. Who knew starting a cattle ranch would offer such diverse ac-claim! A big hooray goes out also to Cathy & Jeff Rosenberg's daughter, Casey, who has been hired by the Miami Marlins to be their dance coach & choreographer for the Marlin's Dance Team. Looks like we need another SFTR Marlins night so we can enjoy her talents & hard work! Jessie Brower made the Honor Roll again, and Cody Brower received an Outstanding Music Award for flute & guitar - quite inspiring! Emma Brower mean while has been riding her SPCA-rescued Dillon in a recent show at Tropical Park, and we await news of her achievements.

Emily Morgan was presented the Hobby Horse Award during the Youth Fair equestrian events, for outstanding contributions to others in her field. Loaning Blue so fellow FFA students could show, training them in the skills of handling & showing a horse, teaching grooming & anatomy, spending months prior to the show practicing with the students & Blue to prepare, and being at their show classes to lend a helping hand – what a wonderful way to pass along one's passion for horses! Christian Dean will be seeing more of our world from above – he recently earned his private pilots license. Congratulations on getting your wings, and that's why they say – the sky's the limit! We heard Jillian Penabella won the Carlton Smith Scholarship at ABAC for the 2nd year! Next it is off to a summer internship on a real beef production ranch! Local News- Silver Palm Feed is relocating to the SW-corner of SW 248 St & Krome Ave, Stop in and say Hi & welcome them to the West side! Remember your IDEAS and INPUT are very much needed to make the SFTR a club YOU enjoy! If you want a change, be part of the process. Voting will start in April at the beach ride, and in May at a ride & the general meeting. You can mail in your ballot, but it must arrive by the end of April. We tried to get more mem-bers to run for offices or the Board, and although many of you have issues, few wanted to actively address their topics of con-cern. So at least now VOTE ! Then in June, as the new Board begins planning for the year, come to the meeting and voice your ideas...it is the only way new blood, new ideas, and a positive forward path for your SFTR can begin! Thanks.

PARADE TEAM NEWS

Hello parade team. The Miami-Dade Intl. Cattle Show was very successful. I want to thank all the riders and ground support people who came out on Satur-day and Sunday - the audience loved us! Thank you Manny Alvarez for another successful show at Tropical Park. Great news, Parade Team, our new uni-forms are coming in and will be displayed at the banquet for members to try on so we can get you your new shirt. This good news is due to the two year sponsorship by Dean International Aviation (Tamiami Executive Airport). We will be giving you your shirt for free if you have purchased our current uniform shirt in the past. Hope everyone comes to the banquet to see the new shirts (child, men's, women's sizes avail). I hope you all like my choices. For those of you that joined this past year, I really hope to see you in July as we begin our next parade season - it is going to be a great year for parades and representing our wonderful club! I will be sending out emails with applications and parade dates for all of you to see, and decide which parades you will be in. Please be sure to email them back to me or send them to the PO Box. I am looking forward to a wonderful parade year with all of you joining me. Remember you can be a safety side-walker, lead-line a horse or pony, and bring juniors to participate. Come one, come all! Any questions about this year's parades please feel free to give me a call. A shout out of thanks to Ben Kroner for bringing us doughnuts this season, and Lumo Print of Homestead (updating our banner). I want to give a very special thank you again to Dean International Aviation, for having sponsored the Parade Team for two years. Thank you so much for your support!
