As years passed, interest waned. The reasons are understandable. Many of the “older set” in EDW who knew Jim have died or become less active in Council affairs. Younger members, especially those who never knew Jim, have multiple invitations to play golf for worthy causes; for example, tournaments run by their own parishes. Therefore, due to insufficient support, there will be no tournament beginning next year. This announcement should not be seen as a complaint or criticism. The decision to close down the tournament is, simply, “one of those things.” Nobody is to blame. Times change. People change. The chances to contribute to worthy causes are constantly expanding. EDW should take pride in having raised thousands of dollars for the fight against pancreatic cancer - - - and then move on. Scotty Skotek

ANNUAL MEETING PREPARATION BrothersIn years past at the annual meeting some members asked very good questions that required

detailed responses. Unfortunately the board wasn’t able to answer the more detailed questions on the spot. The board would need to consult the club’s staff, the “books” or the records to accurately answer these detailed questions. After the meeting the board would research the answers and try to get them to the brothers who asked it. This would often leave the rest of the members in the dark.

This year we want to help eliminate that situation. We’ve created an email account [email protected] . If you have questions regarding the budget or any other aspect of the club that you can reasonably assume the board would have to gather the information in advance we would like to ask you to please submit your question(s) to the board by December 23 so that we can provide you and the rest of the brothers a detailed answer to your questions at the meeting. You deserve proper and accurate answers to legitimate questions at the annual meeting. We hope this new feature will enable that goal.

During the debate/Q&A portion of the meeting the board will answer the submitted questions first and then proceed to answer other questions from the floor.

We will need the questions emailed to [email protected] no later than December 23.RespectfullyThe board

“A BIG THANk YOU FROM THE WWII VETS FROM TYLER TExAS WHO CAME TO OUR MAIN HALL THE PAST OCTOBER 2013”

From Sam Anderson, the Group Leader……. Dear Knights of Columbus, Again thank you for your tremendous help with our veterans last week. It may not be readily apparent, but our veterans love coming there. It is very relaxing and enjoyable. This trip that was especially true. Let me give a quick explanation. On the Friday we came to KOC, we had been to Arlington National Cemetery and had a wonderful experience. We tried to get to Iwo Jima, but it was closed. We were willing to tear down the wooden barricade, but our bus would still have had to go in the grass and the driver was afraid he would get stuck. So we missed that. We then went to WWII where the bottom fell out and our veterans didn’t get to see much. Because of the weather, we then went to Navy and the Newseum. The Newseum was great, but not necessarily what they came to see. So they were slightly discouraged when we arrived at KOC. But their spirits lifted quickly with what you provided: a dry room, excellent hot food, beverages, encouragement, and wonderful entertainment. You can’t imagine what it meant to them. Please share our thanks with all those that helped: the swing dancers, the band, the cloggers, the chefs, the greeters, the waitstaff, the bugler, etc. It was all AWESOME! THANK YOU AGAIN! We did get back to WWII, as well as the Air Force, Vietnam and Korean Memorials the next day in the dry so it ended on a high note as well.

KNIGHT LIFE4

Greetings! Thanksgiving is upon us and before long, it will be Christ-mas! Time sure flies when you are having fun. That’s what we like to do here at LUK – have fun!!!

Speaking of fun . . . I hope you found time to stop by the Tenth Annual Halloween Party. The Old Council Home was decorated spectacularly and the costumes, as always, were fantastic. Everyone seemed to have fun, seeing old friends, checking out costumes, and dancing to MS Project. Overall, I consider this another successful event. At midnight, we had the judging of the best Halloween costumes. Please check out the photo of the winners in this issue of the Knight Life.

I want to thank everyone that helped to make this party a success by decorating, setting up, cooking food, bartending, dressing up, and clean-ing up. Thanks to the Knights that moved all of the decorations down from and back to the attic. Special thanks to PGK Art Gamotis, aka “the Webmaster,” who went out of his way arranging his schedule to create magic with webbing. Because he had to work the night we planned to decorate, he volunteered to decorate the front hall ceilings and stairs on his own. Art is LUK’s Knight of the Month! As I always say, many hands make light work. We, once again, proved that LUK, the EDW K of C, and the Columbus Club make a great team.

LUK is sponsoring the annual EDW Christmas Tree Decorating event on Saturday, November 30 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Everyone, young and old, are invited. Please stop by and bring the kids to turn the Old Council Home into a Christmas wonderland. Please bring a new Christmas ornament to spruce up the tree. If you are looking to downsize your old decorations and trying to find a new home for them, please contact Katie McCarthy. This is a traditional family event, so please grab the kids and stop by.

Snacks will be served! LUK is having its annual Christmas party meeting on Thursday,

December 5. All LUK members (past and present), friends of LUK, and potential new members are welcome to attend. Everyone who wants to participate in the Christmas gift exchange is asked to bring a wrapped gift worth $20. This is a great meeting for potential members to attend.

Please join Ladies U-Knighted in wishing a very happy birthday to . . . me, your LUK Vice President, Jo Wood (Dec 24). I would like to take this time to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving and a Blessed Christmas. Please take some time out of your busy schedules to reflect on the reason for all of these special holidays. Be safe and have fun.

GRAND kNIGHT’S REPORT My Brother Knights, Family Members and Members of the

EDW Community,May the blessings of this Holy Advent and Christmas season

be upon all of you. Remember that the infant of Bethlehem is the reason for the season. The angels told the shepherds “do not be afraid.” Our faith journey is never-ending. We must not be afraid to explore our faith further. Each of our parishes offers classes or talks about one aspect of the church or another. Let us not be afraid to avail ourselves of these opportunities in 2014.

We have a number of Christmas events on campus this month. You will find more detailed information on these events elsewhere in this edition of Knight Life. The highlights are the Breakfast with Santa on the 15th, the Council Christmas Party on the 19th and the New Years’ Eve party on the 31st.

Our annual Thanksgiving Charity dinner was another tremendous success. I want to thank IPGK Thom Galvin and Marijo and all those who volunteered and donated to make this event a success. We partner with various businesses and other community organiza-tions to help pull this event off.

I want to thank Father Joe for presiding, PGKs Vince Long and Art Gamotis for assisting and all those who attended our Memorial mass on November 8. In his homily Fr. Joe told us that while we are somber when we think of our deceased brothers we must also view the Memorial mass as “a celebration of hope.” It is the hope that we will share in the resurrection and in the kingdom of heaven.

After mass we had a nice Supper Club dinner. Thanks to Gary, Maria and the staff that night. Those of you who missed that special evening should plan to attend next year.

The notice of the Annual Meeting of the Columbus Club is elsewhere in this edition. I would just like to point out that there will be at least one (1) Columbus Club meeting in December (on the 5th). The second is scheduled for the 24th. Please check the website (www.vakofcedw2473.org) to see if we reschedule that one as campus will be closed Christmas Eve.

Thank you brother knights for your support this year of our council and its many varied activities. God Bless all of you and Merry Christmas!

Stephen J. McTeagueGrand Knight

NARRATIVE FOR THE PROPOSED 2014 BUDGET FOR THE COLUMBUS

CLUB OF ARLINGTON INC. Christopher Bannon Treasurer Enclosed in this December Knight Life is the Columbus Club, Inc., proposed 2014 Budget for the review of Council members pursuant to the By-Laws, Article V, Section 7. This budget will be presented at the annual meeting of the Corporation, which will be held on January 2nd, 2014 for membership approval. The following table presents a 3 -year portrait of corporate income and expense compared with our proposed 2013 budget to give you as members our financial history. If we used baseball terms, 2013 has been a rebuilding year. The Co-lumbus Club Board, early this year, spent considerable time and work looking at income from facilities rental. We re-thought our pricing and rental policy, but increased income from the new pricing has been lagging. The new pricing except, for a few events, will be fully implemented in 2014. Financially, we also have not been immune to inflation in the cost of food and beverage. In 2013 we have experienced continued revenue growth from the pool and camps. As always, with the 2014 budget, we have adopted a conservative approach to budgeting. The board did a line by line analysis of the 2014 budget. The 2014 Budget is based on our projection of income and expenses for 2014. Total income from all sources is budgeted at $1,455,500 compared with projected costs of 1,388,500.There are slight increases budgeted for real estate taxes, employee benefits and several other expense items. The 2nd table breaks down some of the expenses that we incur on a day-to-day basis that are ag-gregated under “other”. The 3rd table “Real Estate, Payroll Taxes, and Insurance Explained” portrays the cost / budget of four major overhead expense areas. The one variable is parking revenue, which we were expecting in 2013, only $12,000 of the expected $52,000 paid. Negotiations between Hess Construction and our legal advisors are ongoing. We expect that income will be paid in 2014. This is not shown in the budget. The contact runs through May 0f 2014. Regarding the Parking Reserve account. There is an ongoing practice of borrowing from the parking account in the leaner revenue months of September through the end of the year. The borrowed money is re-paid over the following year after income from the pool and camp and member’s dues start coming in. There has been serious consideration on the board on how to deal with this. After the projected income of $18,500, you see the principle payment of $48,000 repaying the outstanding loan. This loan is scheduled to be paid off on or before 11-01-2016.

kENNY’S kWOTES A month of anticipation is upon us, We celebrate that Jesus is

still among us, His birth is the hope we have for redemption, Fol-lowing his words will give us salvation, Let His light shine forth this Christmas season. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.

ON THE HOOk The Fish Club Christmas Party will be Dec. 7, 2013 in the Old

Council Home. Dues are due: $15.00. Please bring an appetizer or desert.
