When I Read…….

By: Emily Byrnes (3C)

When I read, I feel like I am in the story. I feel like I'm going through every emotion like

happy and sad things the characters are going through. To me, every book is like a new

adventure. Sometimes I get so carried away, with reading I can finish a book in one or

two days. I’m not very picky with books, as long as they are very, very, very “ big”. My

favourite kind of books are “scary” story, and “adventure” books. I also have a lot of clas-

sics like Peter Pan, Black Beauty, Anna Of Green Gables, A Little Princess, and Robin

Hood.

Books inspire me. Books inspire me so much I have decided to write my own book. Some-

times my teacher gives me a chance to tell my own creative stories aloud to the class. I

feel really great when I see myself as a storyteller! I have asked some kids in my class

what they do they think of my stories. Here is one of the responses, “It was awesome. I rate

it 10 out of 10! I actually think I have a very good chance of becoming an author when I

grow up. All because of Books!!

January 27th, 2017 was Family Literacy Day! In honour of reading and writing some of

our students have written their perspective on reading. Massey students are always

nurturing their minds and hearts through books.

How I Improved in My Reading

By: Hailey Powell (3C)

Hi my name is Hailey. I would like to share how

I improved in my Reading . I am in grade 3, my

teacher’s name is Mrs. Bhandal. To give me confi-

dence, she gives me a chance to read aloud pic-

ture books to my class. I felt very excited, but nerv-

ous also for the first time. After that, I felt more brave

to read aloud and now I am able to figure out even

difficult words. I also listen to my friends read during

‘Read to Someone’ time. My teacher also reads

with me and sends books home to read with my

parents or brothers. They read one page and I read

the other page. Reading is fun because I like to

read funny books. When I read or I listen to read

aloud, I learn different things, like when Emily read

the book about New York City, I learned that Em-

pire State building is 102 floors high!

How I Learned to Read

By: Priya Sur (3B)

Did you know that black panthers are strong swimmers and can climb trees?

Well I do because I learned to read!! At first, it was hard to read. I didn’t understand some

words. I started to read with my teacher, with my family and on my own. I even read under

a blanket with little lights! Reading is important because if something important happens

you need to read about it. Reading helps take you into your imagination because that

takes you somewhere else. I used to read normal books but now I read chapter books. To

read chapter books I had to practice a lot. Now I’m in grade 3 and I'm a terrific reader.

Guess what reading is actually fun! Once you start to read it may not be easy. I always say

everybody's different. If it’s your first time reading there's nothing to be afraid of. It's O.K to

make mistake because it is part of learning!

P.S. Don’t forget to read!!!

Green Screen Club By: Yug and the Green Screen Club (Grade 3)

Did you know that there is

a Green Screen club at

Massey Street P.S.? Do you

know what a Green

Screen is? Well, a Green

Screen is actually…. a

Green Screen. The back-

ground of the screen is green so that we can use a computer to

put any background images we would like. Right now our club is working on a green screen

background of a news report. We are learning from Grade 5 experts and it is so much fun!

The grade 3 and 4 students are meeting weekly to learn the value of leader-

ship. Under the guidance of Mrs. Bhandal and our volunteer, Mrs. Persaud,

the students are participating in hands on learning opportunities.

Fun Program. It is a unique program that offers children the opportunity to get involved in

physical activity while allowing them to set and meet their personal goals. Students will run/walk 40 KM during the month of April at school and at home. The final 2KM will be complet-

ed on Sunday, May 7th, during the final 2KM of the Mississauga Marathon 12:30 p.m at Hia-

watha Park. There is lots of parking at Carmen Corbasson Community Centre where the

shuttle picks up runners. Parents will be responsible for getting their children to the event

and have it signed by a parent, teacher, or coach. If you would like your child to partici-pate in the Mississauga MaraFun Program, please fill out the attached registration form and

return it to school with the registration fee (cheques payable to Mississauga Marathon).

Once your registration form and fees are received at school, your pledge form to start col-

lecting funds for Massey Street PS’s Physical Education program and your Participation Rec-

ord will be sent home, along with, further race-day information. Ms. Twinney will register all

participants and will pick up race kits and distribute to all students before race day.

Celebrating Faith and Culture Backgrounder February 2017

The Peel District School Board is a mosaic of many cultures and faiths from all over

the world. To commemorate this diversity, the board recognises special faith and

culture days of our communities. February 2017 has several special faith and cul-

ture days to celebrate and remember: ________________________________________________________

February - Buxwlaks and Bear Moon in Aboriginal Spirituality

Buxwlaks is celebrated by Nisga'a people of the Nass Valley in Northwest British

Columbia. It is the season of blowing needles of the evergreens. The wind shakes

loose the foliage from frozen trees and heralds the approach of new growth and

the New Year.

The second moon of Creation is called the Bear Moon by the Ojibwe people. This

month the stories related to the spirituality and cultures of the Six nations are re-

told in the communities.

February 1 - Vasant Panchami in Hinduism

A North Indian celebration, Vasant Panchami is celebrated in honour of Saraswati, the

Goddess of Learning and Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth.

The fifth day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Magh is Vasanta Pan-

chami and the first day of spring. Hindus celebrate this festival by holding ceremo-

nies to venerate Saraswati, goddess of wisdom and knowledge. People dress in

yellow and get together with their families. Marigold flowers are featured in reli-

gious services. Symbolically, the education of children in their first year begins on

this day.

February 1 or 2 - Imbolc in Wicca

Imbolc is the second major Sabbat in Wicca. It celebrates the sun's increasing

Dear Massey families:

Massey Street Public School is pleased to again offer The Families and Schools Together

(FAST) program where you and your family can come to the school for 8 weeks beginning

Wednesday, April 5th to Wednesday, May 24th from 5 pm to 8 pm for dinner and participate

in family activities. There are no fees associated with this program, as it is funded by United

Way of Peel.

The reasons for offering this program are simple:

v It provides the children with an entirely different perspective of their school. They see

the parents and school staff having fun together, which has nothing to do with their

schooling.

v Research proves that the more connected parents are with their children’s school,

the better the child does I school. We believe that a partnership with the parents of

our students is vital to the school community, and FAST provides a wonderful oppor-

tunity to build these partnerships.

v The FAST program can strengthen and enhance the bond between parents and their

children. Research also shows us that strengthening this bond at the primary school

age is a deterrent for problems down the road when children enter their teenage

years.

If you are interested, please sign and return this permission form by February 10, 2017 so that

our FAST Coordinator can contact you and provide you with more details.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the FAST Coordinator, Niki Dawe, by

phone or email.

* Phone: (W) 905-791-9392 or (C) 416-826-8641 * Email: [email protected]

Thank you,

The Massey FAST Team
