Corrections to the previous issueIn the June 24 issue, the story titled “Like a wet ninja” stated that the Medusa platform can dive down to 5,500 feet. It can actually dive down to 6,500 feet. Also, the photo caption names Justin Marshall as a person on the boat, but that person is actually Adrian Flynn, Marshall’s Ph.D. student. A source misidentified him.

Last summer, we stayed indoors and drank and featured the best-kept secrets in local nightlife, from hookah bars to homemade burgers.

This year, we decided to help out guys who usually fail at impressing us on first dates. But awkward daters of either gender can use our

tips to get sweaty this summer.We hope you impress the one you’re crushing

on and enjoy what South Florida has to offer other than the movies and dinner.

When you think of second-date material, you should think of running over hundred-year-old alligators.

This can be done in a romantic way with airboating. Usually lasting an hour, airboating can be a semi-cheap, creative idea for an afternoon in the sun.

This is best for a second date, primarily because there’s no way you will actually be able to talk to your date. It helps to get to know who and what you’re dealing with on the first date. When you’re airboating, the boat is so loud that everyone gets to wear goofy ear muffs. There’s also not much privacy, since you will be sharing a boat with about 10 other people.

There are a few things to know before you go.Make it an early morning. Most places close by

4 p.m., so try to make the 10 a.m. ride. You’ll be

cooler and have a better chance of seeing alligators. Surface temperatures have been known to hit 120 degrees in the mid afternoon. The best clothing attire is beachwear. Bring sunscreen because you will get sunburned, despite the cool air you get while you’re moving.

Prepare to be whacked in the face. No, not with that – get your head out of the gutter. Since the airboat has a flat bottom, it can ride over pretty much everything, including plants and gators. The best advice is to prepare to duck from the plants and keep your mouth shut from the bugs.

Loxahatchee Everglades Airboat Tours is the closest place to the Boca campus to go airboating. At the very end of Hillsboro Boulevard, it’s about a 30- to 45-minute drive. If you’re running late, we did some testing for you. You can successfully go over the speed bumps at 55 mph in a low-riding Honda

Civic. Beware, though – since the area has recently become part of Parkland, the cops are out and in force.

Remember to go on their Web site, www.evergladesairboattours.com, for coupons. If you pay full price for the ride, you’ve been scammed. They usually have a 25-percent discount or a “buy one, get one half off” type of deal.

There are other places, but this one is closer and has a totally corny museum that everyone just has to go see. Stuffed gators, foxes and boars are on display, along with fish and turtles. The highlight of the museum is all the old newspapers hanging on the wall featuring articles about airboating successes and tragedies. They make for good reading.

So before you unleash your gator, try to take her to see a few gators that call our western backyard home.

Usually, a guy would shy away from bringing his date to a male-dominated place like a shooting range. There are just too many options there for her. However, the shooting range may bring you some bonus points in the “fun and creative” category.

If you decide you want to introduce your lady to the world of ammo, make sure you precaution her. The shooting range will never be a good idea for a blind date or as a surprise. Let her know that it will be loud and that it will make her adrenaline rush.

These two factors combined can either be a good thing and get you laid or be a bad thing and get you snarled at.

After you’ve confronted her and sold her on the idea of going shooting for an afternoon, take her through the process if she’s never done it before. Most likely, she’s in it just to learn about it and do something daring.

If she’s been to a shooting center and loved it in the past, no need to read the rest of this article. Go show her how you use your pistol.

For our new girls, take her to Dixie Guns and Ammo in Pompano Beach to buy yourself some

ammo. If the sketchy building and men with guns in their holsters don’t scare her away, you’re almost in the clear. The men behind the desk are actually very warm-hearted and helpful. Your lucky lady may get the chance to hold an AR-15 semi-automatic assault weapon (unloaded, of course).

The Arizona Shooting Range in Fort Lauderdale is one of the few shooting ranges in South Florida that we recommend you hit up. It’s an indoor range within a plaza, so if she hates the idea of shooting a gun, you can walk next door to the Asian restaurant and salvage whatever is left of your date.

A game of minigolf is cute and innocent — but you can turn it into a sexy competition by diverting each other with innuendos of golf terminology.

Adventure Mini Golf in Lake Worth is the perfect spot for things to get a bit naughty. The greens are actually kept in good shape, and there are streams and waterfalls throughout that hide what you might be suggesting to each other.

They have two courses to choose from, so you can personalize your putt-putt skills. The

easy course will keep your mind on flirting by letting you give each other hands-on lessons on how to putt properly. The more competitive couple can turn up the heat a bit on the hard course by teasing each other while trying to stay under par.

The best time to go is on weekdays, when it’s slower. You can spend as much time as you want giving each other lessons — or distracting each other. On the weekends you might be hurried along since it does get busy, but it’s still fine to go if you’re up for a quickie. Either way, at the end of the game you can buy the winner ice cream or a snack at the entrance counter.

If you’re not ready to turn in for the night, Palm Beach Strike Zone bowling alley shares the same parking lot and is open until 1 a.m. on weekends.

You can grab a game or two of bowling that will ensure another round of comments about putting your fingers in holes, which might make the night end with just the things you were hinting about.

There are so many companies to choose from in the $30 to $35 range. It’s a cheap date, and the best part is that if you catch anything, you can cook her some dinner.

Flamingo Fishing in Fort Lauderdale was our main boat to charter, but because we are college students, we are never on time. The boat leaves promptly at 1 p.m. After doing some research, we found Fishing Headquarters, which had a boat leaving at 1:30 p.m. A short walk and $35 later, we were sitting on the side panel of the boat ready to leave the Intracoastal.

You’re almost guaranteed to catch at least one fish on this boat, but don’t tell her this — when you reel in

a big one, she’ll think you’re the man. If she’s never been fishing before, you can get the opportunity to help her learn how to hold a reel and how the process of fishing works.

If you have never been fishing before, google it. A lady likes it when a man can teach her how to do manly things.

You should encourage her to bait her own hook, but don’t force it on her. After all, dead fish are slimy and gooey, and she may have just gotten her nails done.

There are a few things to do before you even step foot on the boat. Check the weather update on The Weather Channel or www.weather.com. If the swells in the ocean are at least five feet, you may want to reconsider going fishing that day. After all, the best way to woo a girl is to not make her throw up.

Take any kind of motion sickness medicine and

encourage her to take it too. If you’re too manly to take medicine in front of your girl, take it in the bathroom or when she’s not around. The last thing you want is to throw up in front of her. For all you broke college students out there, the Walgreens version of Dramamine, Wal-dram, works just as well and costs a lot less.

If she catches a fish, encourage her to reel it in herself. Don’t be upset if she catches a fish and you don’t — although that probably won’t happen.

Remember that you will be on a boat for four or five hours, so try not to make any plans after the boat ride. When you get off, tip the boat hands and they’ll clean and filet your fish so you can take it home and cook some lovely dinner for your girl.

Get her a glass of wine and … yeah.

There’s no need to empty your wallet to take your summer squeeze on a vacation when you can fake it.

Fort Lauderdale is a great getaway spot, but as locals, we don’t get to enjoy it like the tourists do. At the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort and Spa, though, you can just show up in some crazy outfit and do just that.

Dress like you’re from out of town with some obnoxious tropical prints and a huge backpack, and just have a look of awe on your face the whole time. No one will question whether you’re from here.

Try out Aloha Watersports, a beach sports equipment rental company located on the beach at the resort. There are metal detector, boogie board and surfboard rentals, as well as the water weenie ride, a long, tube-shaped object you straddle, for

$20 to $50 a person for each activity.If you want to splurge a bit, they also offer rentals

on boats, waverunners, parasailing, and scuba or snorkeling dives that are by reservation only. Be prepared to spend between $70 and $200 for the rentals and another $200 for the dive reservations.

After some exciting ocean adventures, take it easy for a bit on the beach’s hammocks or shaded lounge chairs.

This kind of special treatment is what any girl wants to enjoy, and you’ll feel like you’re living the life of luxury when the booze cart comes around for you to purchase made-to-order drinks without leaving the beach.

Make sure you spend some time by the pool because cookies and lemonade are given out around 3 p.m.

Once you have your snacks, make your way over to the abundant seating available on the enormous outside patio area. This will give you some alone

time in a more secluded setting. If the day is going well so far, it will probably get better.

When the sun starts to set, your minivacation isn’t over yet. Just a 10-minute walk down the street is the bar-happy area of Fort Lauderdale at State Road A1A and Las Olas Boulevard.

You can go back to being locals and enjoy the oceanfront strip. Places like Fat Tuesday usually have a good college crowd. It’s known for its frozen concoctions, and when you purchase a drink in a signature cup, refills are available at a discount — even when you bring it back the next time.

If you want to make it a real vacation and rent a room at the Marriott, it will set you back about $300.

So grab that blanket from your car and spend a bit of time on the beach in the dark. Since you’re on vacation, it doesn’t matter who might see or hear you because you can use the golden excuse: “I’m not from around here.”

Just your clothing can tell people that you’re not a local. Here are a few pointers on getting together your tourist costume.*

Hair: Be simple with your hair — pull it back or braid it. You can even get a hair wrap or two for that cheesy effect.

Sunglasses: Cheap shades can be found anywhere. Just find a pair that looks slightly ridiculous — the more awkward they look on you, the better.

Backpack: As an adult, wearing a brightly colored backpack will pretty much put you out of place anywhere.

Pamphlet in hand: Having any sort of map, pamphlet or booklet is a dead giveaway that you have no idea where you are and you don’t have a clue as to where you’re going.

Dress: Floral print? Check. Obnoxiously bright color? Check. Not too revealing length? Check.

Beach towel: Any beach towel will do, and hanging it on the side of your backpack will give the added “I’m a traveler” effect.

Sandals: Don’t be too flashy with your footwear – simple flip-flops will do, because people up north don’t really have a need for them most of the year.

Follow most of these guidelines as well, but wear a simple-colored pair of board shorts and maybe get a cheap tank top with some annoying neon slogan like “I’m in Miami, Bitch” on it to show that you got a souvenir already and you’re proud of it.

There’s only one place, hopefully, where alcohol meets a bomb shelter. Peanut Island, known for being a boater’s party dream, was also John F. Kennedy’s Cold War bunker.

For getting to know someone in a social situation, this may be a great date.

If you’re not into drinking alcohol, you can walk around the island and enjoy the history of the Kennedy bunker. If you are into drinking alcohol, try not to get too sloshed — just enough to enjoy the day. Remember, pace yourself. It will be a long day.

Kennedy had this bunker created on the man-made island in Riviera Beach’s Intracoastal during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and it is currently on display, thanks to the Palm Beach Maritime Museum. Roughly $10 will get you into the bunker.

Getting onto Peanut Island itself is another story. If you know someone with a boat, that would be the ideal way of getting there. A nice ride up the Intracoastal with your main squeeze could be quite romantic. If you don’t have access to a boat, that’s no problem. There are water taxis that will bring you from land to the island. The drive is a bit of a haul to Riviera Beach, but it’s worth it.

Beyond the excessive drinking, the sunbathing and the museum, Peanut Island offers so much. Camping, snorkeling, sailing and charter boats to go fishing can be found all over the island.

The island houses 20 camping sites. They only provide a shower and toilet, so go prepared. You can pitch a tent either on the site or on the beach, and a fire pit on the island can make for good s’mores times … or other good times.

If everything goes according to plan, you may get the chance to show her your peanuts.

Enjoy the scenery of the water, the trees and your girl’s assets as you paddle down the Loxahatchee River.

At Jonathan Dickinson State Park, located near Jupiter in Hobe Sound off of U.S. 1, river tours are available seven days a week. Canoe and kayak rentals are available all day.

In a kayak, you can paddle side by side to see each other. But in a canoe, the guy can sit in the back and steer while the girl enjoys the scenery in front.

This adventure will have to start early, since the high temperatures will get unbearable as the day goes on and there isn’t much shade. If you go earlier, the wildlife will still be out until it gets too hot. It’s best to get there right around opening time at 9 a.m.

As a warning, canoeing will give you a chance to see how good your communication skills are. You’ll have to figure out fast how to tell each other which side to paddle on so as not to spin in circles the whole way, which can quickly get frustrating.

Both paddles are necessary to propel the canoe forward, but the back one does all the steering. You have to paddle on opposite sides to go straight, but to turn left, both paddles have to be on the right, and to turn right, both have to be on the left.

If you can get this down, then you’re ready for other tasks that involve steady, repetitious movements.

The shorter of the two tours is paddling down the Loxahatchee and into Kitching Creek, a narrow path with overhanging trees and lots of opportunities to see birds with their nests.

This option is better if you’re a beginner because paddling upstream is quite a workout, and it’s less than $20 overall for the small adventure.

If you want to plan a whole day, pack some lunch and make your way up the river to the Trapper Nelson Interpretive Site, a small preserve dedicated to the “Wild Man of the Loxahatchee.” Trapper Nelson lived in the woods in the 1950s and helped maintain the natural habitats of the area.
