MY PLACE IN ST. ANDREW'S JUNIOR SCHOOL

Working in Saint Andrew's Junior School has definitely been a challenging and rewarding experience for me. This mission school has always been a special part of my life. The reason is because I did my primary school education in this very school. My teachers had enriched my childhood life through their dedicated effort in their roles as teachers and role models. Thus, joining the school as a support staff is special; it is like returning home to a big family.

Hospitality is one of the hallmarks of Saint Andrew's Junior School and it is most heartening to discover that it is still very much alive and prevailing. The warm and liberal reception I received from the principal and her staff was most encouraging for it gave me a sense of acceptance and belonging. It also reminded me of what Saint Andrew's stands for - a school with a vision for "missions". Clearly, I see that my "mission" in the school is to reach out to the children. So far, working with the children has been very fruitful and satisfying. I have always known that children are very special people; well , that fact became a reality when I started becoming their friend.

My immediate goal at this point of time is to establish myself as a friend to the school. I wish to be a listening ear to the students as well as the staff at any time and hope students will feel free to approach me to talk and share with when faced with difficulties. My aim is to be that someone who is ready to empathize and help. Thank you Saint Andrew's for giving me the opportunity to serve you.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS BY MY YEE TECK PENG, CHAIRMAN, BUILDING COMMITTEE

Our Distinguish Guest of Honour, The Honourable Mr Eugene Yap Giau Cheng, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Member of Parliament for Mountbattan and a fellow Saint; Mrs Eugene Yap Ngo Eng; The RT. Rev(Dr) Moses Tay, Bishiop of Singapore and Chairman of ST. Andrew's School Board of Governors; Mrs Cynthia Tay; Mr Jacob Ballas, patron of the St. Andrew's School development project; distinguish guests, ladies and gentlemen, fellow Saints,

staff and pupils of St. Andrew's School.

Good afternoon and welcome to the blessing and ground breaking ceremony for the building of the new St Andrew's Junior School.

Let me briefly trace the history of St Andrew's School. In 1950, two Anglican Catechists, Mr Sim Owee and Mr Tye Kim, ran a private scho9I in Chin Chew Street.

On 8 Sept 1862, under the work and influence of a missionary, the Rev Edward Shermann Venn, the Anglican Church adopted the private institution of Sim Owee and Tye Kim. On that date, the private institution became

St. Andrew's School.

The school grew. On 10 Sept 1863, St Andrew's School moved to Upper Hokkien Street.

On 22 May 1872, the Colonial Chaplain, Canon J A Beccles, successfully applied to the government for financial aid. St Andrew's became a grant-in-aid school.

The school continued to grow and in the same year, shifted to VICTORIA STREET.

There was no stopping of the growth of St Andrew's School. In 1875, under the leadership of the Colonial Chaplain,

the Rev George Frederick Hose and the School Superintendent, the Rev Eil liam Henry Gomes, St Andrew's had to move again. This time to a larger campus in Stamford Road, where the present National Library is situated.

The school continued to prosper and grow. In 1940, under the leadership of the Rev R KS Adams, the school had to move once again. This time to Woodsville.

In 1978, St Andrew's School had to discontinue the pre-university classes. The Anglican Church, together with the Presbyterian and the Lutheran churches, built the St Andrew's Junior College, at Alexander Road, to take in preuniversity pupils from the various schools.

37

Because of the continuous growth and also the development of the Jalan Toa Payoh Pan-Island Express Highway along the south side of our school, in 1984, St Andrew's Secondary moved to its present site in Potong Pasir.

Today, 22 May 1993, marks another milestone of the growth of St Andrew's School. On this site, the north end of our playing field, along Francis Thomas Frive, will rise a new and modern St Andrew's Junior School. It will be completed by January 1995.

The new St Andrew's Junior School is built according to the MOE/PWD standard plan P100.

It will have 36 classrooms and all the other standard facilities.

With the basic standard features, our consultant architect, Dr Ho Kok Hoe, an old boy and also a well known artist,

has incorporated into the new building things traditional to the Saints.

The large arches along the corridors of the ground floor, the fish scale walls, the salmon pink colour of the school walls, a balcony at the second level of the school facing the quadrangle and in this new school, 4 towers, one at each corner of the school building. At the top of each tower there will be a glass panel with the school crest.

Our school field is pretty low. Part of the building work will be to raise the level of the entire field by 2 metres of earth. Our playing field has shrunk. In the good old days, we had 2 playing fields. One for the Junior School, now part of the Toa Payoh Pan-Island Express Highway and the other for the Senior School, where we are now. Mr Eugene Yap knows this field pretty well. He played Rugby for the Saints. We still can have a rugby field but it may have to be in a East/West direction.

One of our aims is to build a stadium at the west side of the field. The government is building a jogging track/ exercise park along the Kallang River from the Toa Payoh flyover to Braddell flyover. With this, our schools will

enjoy a beautiful outdoor environment. The patron of our development project is Mr Jacob Ballas. The Chairman of the funding committee is Mr Koh Boon Hwee.

The cost of building the Junior School is $13.4 million and the two extension blocks of the Secondary School is $4.6M. Our share is $4M. The funding committee launched its fund raising programme with a grand Fund-Raising Dinner at the Shangri-La Hotel in April last year. I am very pleased to announce that in 1 year, our last financial report shows that we need another $600,000 more to achieve our target. The Funding Committee will not stop there. The members will continue to raise funds for future projects.

We are indeed most grateful to the Government for the generous grant and to all our Well Wishers and Saints who have contributed so generously and unselfishly towards our building fund.

In his address at the official opening of the St Andrew's Secondary School on 3 Nov 1984, the Honourable Dr Tay Eng Soon, Minister of State for Education, urged St Andrew's to go single session. We are most grateful for his advice, direction and encouragement. With this in mind, we embarked on the extension of the Secondary School

The two extension wings of the Secondary School will by ready for occupation in January 1994 and the Junior School, January 1995. We look forward to go single session as soon as the buildings are ready for occupation. St Andrew' will always continue to upgrade and provide good facilities for our young citizens so that they can grow up in wisdom and stature in the spirit and tradition of St Andrew's School. Once upon a time, we - the primary, secondary and pre-university-were located under one roof in our well-beloved building at Woodsville. now, though we may be located in different places - in the words of our School Hymn - we are "one family unbroken "and with "one heart, one voice upliftng, we glorify the name."

SPEECH OF MR EUGENE YAP, DEPUTY SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT AND

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR MOUNTBATTEN

ON 22 MAY 1993, AT 5.30PM AT ST ANDREW'S JUNIOR

SCHOOL - GROUND.-BREAKING CEREMONY

The Rt Rev Dr. Moses Tay, Bishop of Singapore and Chairman of the Board of Governors, Principal, Teachers, Old

Boys, Parents, Friends, I am very happy to be back in my alma mater to officiate at its groundbreaking ceremony.

Being an old by of the school, this ceremony holds a very special meaning for me. It marks a special occasion

in the school's history - we are taking a step to bring the school forward in time, to ensure that the school keeps

going UP & ON!

In this day and age, our schools must not be left behind. And here in St. Andrew's, I can visualize the school

bringing up the next generation of citizens, i.e. the workers, the leaders of tomorrow. Here, even in the Junior

School, we will see the nest where the Principal and teachers are actively involved in the nurturing of young

people, moulding the minds, the skills and the character and attitudes that go with it. Education is a tool to

determine the total person. In St. Andrew's, with this next step we can expect that together with the new and

additional facilities for our Junior School, will come changes and new challenges ahead.

Now in the era of the 90's, we have to be prepared to bring our children into the 21st century. By the way, it is not

too far away, it is about seven years away. I think, for the 21st century, the winning formula lies in the word

COMPETITIVENESS. We have to steer the course of education in such a direction that our young people in our

charge will be able to cope with the times when they will be living, holding responsible jobs and making the

necessary decisions to keep Singapore running successfully in the first league of economic survival where we

will be competiting with advanced countries such as Japan, some European countries and America. Whatever it

takes for a nation to survife, it always starts at the beginning, in the schools. Hence, even at the Primary level,

perhaps more crucially so, those who hold the reins of their education, have to see ahead to ensure that what we

bring up in our schools will be products who will be happy and proud to have been through the education

system that we have designed for them. Theirs is not the choice, the choice lies in our hands, the educators now.

Other schools will face similar challenges and schools have to rise to the occasion to provide the necessary

inputs-be it in E.C.A. or the co-curricular programmes-but appropriate inputs there must be. Hence, as with

other schools, St. Andrew's will need to build into the existing school network or programmes the means to

develop in pupils the various qualities which will stand them in good stead to prepare them for their adult life

which will be very different from today. Not only are they expected to work successfully in Singapore, they are also

expected at times to adjust very quickly and adapt to live in countries outside of Singapore and carry on working

and raising a family as successfully.

How do we do this? Young children are exuberant and curious, with an innate love for adventure. They should be

encouraged to look beyond the confines of school and home for fun and adventure. Strengthen their spirit of

promote sports that challenge the individual to build not only his physical fitness but also mental toughness and

emotional resilience. Pupils should be exposed to rugged sporting activities like rugby, sailing , rock-climbing ,

boxing, martial arts, etc which develop grit and a spirit of adventure. To imbue in pupils a broader and global outlook,

exchange programmes with neighbouring countries could be organized . This would contribute to their better

understanding and appreciation of different cultutural traditions and values. Develop the creative and entrepreneural

spirit and the willingness to take risks by allowing pupils to experiment and make mistakes. Be tolerant of the mistakes

made and treat them as learning experiences for the pupils .

I am confident that St Andrew's will prepare its pupils well to live and work in the society of the future. In so many

ways , St Andrew's is like any other school in Singapore in its concern to keep up and to get on with the task of

education of the young. St Andrew's is like other schools in its pursuit of academic excellence. Which school in

Singapore isn't trying to do that? But what stands out in the school is the way it goes about the business of education.

Perhaps, I should say how the Principal and the teachers go about nurturing the young .

St. Andrew's is founded upon the Christian faith and its tradition steeped in Christian love. This is the hallmark of

St. Andrew's and I know this has coloured the school 's educational goals, particularly, that of moulding of character

and the inculcation of moral values. I know I can expect to see this special feature of the school continuing into

the 21st century. Over the years, the school has been supported by two pillars of strength in its task of maintaining

this tradition: the Old Boys' Association and the Parent-Teacher Association. Between these two bodies, they have

made it possible for us to look forward to a new Junior School with its new facilities for teachers and students. May

God be praised for dedicated old Boys and concerned parents .

The new Junior School will be concrete proof that St. Andrew's is moving ahead with the times, and growing from

strength to strength. Our children are our only resource, and if we can continue to build our education on a firm

foundation, as upon a rock, then when the storm of life breaks, the school , as in the body of students , will stand firm

against the test of time. A lot goes into nurturing and development of the young, and I must say and with pride, the

tradition here is non like any other.

On this note, I wish to congratulate the Principal , staff, pupils and parents , the Board of Management and Old

Boys for the efforts put in to realise your vision of building better facilities to meet the needs of your pupils .

SPEECH BY MR. LAWRENCE TEO, SCHOOL SUPERVISOR.

ON FRIDAY 2ND APRIL 1993

AT THE PREFECT'S COMMENDATION SERVICE

Parents, Teachers, Students. This year our school is 131 years old . Our school has such a long and illustrious history which very few schools in the country can match. Each one of you are a part of this tradition because you are here today. Our school has produced some of the finest scholars and sportsmen for our country for many years and one day some of you sitting here today will add to that list. Today , however, I so not want to focus of these high achievers but I want to talk a little about the average student that SAJS strives to produce.

What is education? Today you see everyone comparing how well they have done for their exams, and what kind of schools they want to to to. There is a tendency to win &! all costs.

This, children and parents is not education. Acad~rnic achievements are important but they are not the beginning and end of education. It is only part of education .

I believe that every child has a natural talent. It is up to the school and the parents to recognise this ability and hope the child to develop these talents to their fullest. These talents need not necessarily be academic.

Education is the development of the total person which includes spiritual development, moral development, and physical and mental development.

Jesus Christ taught us to love one another, and to learn to exercise patience, goodness, and self control. He taught us to be concern for each other and to help those that are less well off than ourselves. The spirit of sacrifice cannot be more emphasized than Jesus' death upon the cross to pay for the sins of mankind. A man without a soul is no better than an animal. Wild animals tear each other apart. The spiritual development that this school inculcates in our children brings out the humanity in them. We teach our students to be caring and concern for there fellow beings.

The second quality which we want to inculcate in our children is moral uprightness. Our children are taught to be honest and truthful. We encourage them to speak freely if they believe that they have a view that is correct. We believe this quality is important if we want to produce responsible citizens of the future.

The third quality is physical and mental excellence. Through games we encourage our children to build healthy bodies. We also strive to teach our children their daily lesson so that they will do well in their exams. We give them every opportunity to develop their academic abilities. I have personally requested all teachers in the school not to neglect any child whether he is at the lower, middle, or higher end of the class. Teachers must show love and concern for their children. I have said to all teachers that when they teach in SAJS it is a calling and not just a job. I have been blunt enough to tell them that if they are looking for a job they should try elsewhere. Here in SAJS we want teachers who care. I am personally concerned that we have the right attitudes towards our pupils.

But, I have a word for all parents who are here that the school alone cannot succeed in developing all these qualities in your child. You have an equally important part to play. Your child spends as much times at home as in school.

· We can monitor him while he in school but once he is at home you have to play your part to see that he does his homework and keeps up with his school work. One word of caution - the tuition teacher does not absolve you

42

Page 23: UP ANDO...BOARD OF GOVERNORS L to R : Mr Lawrence Teo, Mdm Jacqueline Oehlers, Mr Yee Teck Peng, Bishop Moses Tay, Mr Harry Tan, Mr Tan Soo Kiang, Mr Wong Yew Meng (Seated) L to R

from this responsibility. Please also feel free to talk to his class teacher and monitor his progress at regular

intervals and become friends with their teachers rather than adversaries. Your child will benefit in the end.

Finally, I want to conclude by saying that this service is unique. I believe that we are the only Junior School in Singapore to have such a service. To the boys who are chosen to be prefects I say discharge you duties honestly and fairly. Do not bully the other students but rather set yourselves as examples for the rest of your schoolmates to follow. This is an opportunity for you to develop your leadership qualities.

Remember the things you learn now because they will stand you in good stead in the future. Proverbs 22 vs 6 says, "Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it"

May God Bless all of you and your families.

The proud parents.

During the homestay I bumped into my fellow Singaporeans on several occasions during sightseeing trips . We also got together on the 31st of July for a performance at the Fukuoka Futaba Elementary School. After our performance, Crystal , Joan, Rahayu , Shafiq , Ivan and I went ice-skating.

The 2nd of August was the big day! Prior to going to the Fukuoka Dome, we stopped at the Fukuoka Tower to have a 'birds-eye' view of the city. The view was magnificent.

We arrived at the Fukuoka Dome and assembled at the orange coloured stage. Then we changed and put on make-up. After the Korean play, it was our turn . We started our performance by giving a short speech . Introducing ourselves and explaining the dances that were to be performed. Then it was SHOW TIME! 11

Everything went off well , but when my turn came, my timing was slightly off. But no one seemed to notice. And what's more? Well , Subashini 's and my dance, and the finale was shown on the big screen in the Dome. After our performance. we were mobbed and asked for autographs, and after which I had the T-shirt given to me by the organisers signed by my new-found friends. We watched the other performances, and for a short while the organisers opened a portion of the Dome and we enjoyed the sunlight and fine drizzle. That night I went to bed tired , sleepy, but very happy.

The following day my host family were kind enough to take me out for last minute shopping.

On the 4th the time for goodbyes arrived . With a heavy heart I said goodbye to my kind host family and said "Domo arigatou gozaimasu", words alone could not express how I felt. The trip back was uneventful and in Singapore our fans (our parents) were there to greet us. We went home, unpacked. and went to sleep with mixed feelings . Sad that such an experience had come ot an end. but happy to have been fortunate enough to have gone.

I will remember Fukuoka as the most friendly and best city in the whole wide world. The Japanese are so friendly (and I miss their food) . They say in the years I will still remember the trip . I will never forget it.

p -COMPUTER CLUB REPORT

After the recruitment drive in January '93, the club has a strength of 20 members from the Pr 6 and 6 members from Pr 5. The poor response in Pr 5 is due to reasons like; most of the boys are already committed to another activity, transport problem excetera.

The boys were taught to use the software "Printshop". Every week, they would use the program to print Birthday Cards, Calender, notices and posters. The Pr 6 boys even played Chinese Chess on the computer during their leisure.

When the boys had mastered the Printshop program, they were taught how to use a word processing program, "WordPerfect". This was taught so that the boys would be able to type notes for learning or any document.

Initially, the boys had great difficulty doing this because many of them had never done anything on the keyboard. They spent much of their time locating the keys. Later, when they were more familiar, they started to use two fingers instead of one.

There is much to be learnt but it is hoped that this skill will come in handy for the Pr 6 boys when they move up to the next level where they have to type and hand in projects.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH MATHS IT'S EASY - IT'S FUN

Many parents want to help their children learn Maths, but they often feel that the Maths taught in shcool today

is different from the type of Maths they learned themselves. This makes it difficult for parents to know what to do.

There has been a change of emphasis towards more practical task, towards the process of making Maths meaningful, towards encouraging children to solve problems and talk about the Maths that they are doing.

To assist parents with this change, a talk by Mr Lim Keng Boon was organised on 3 April 1993.

MINI-HOCKEY

With their tested experience and hard work in 1991 in which our players were the 'Runner-up' in the Kallang District Mini-Hockey Tournament and winners of the bronze trophy in the National Tournament. our players were better prepared for this year's Kallang District Tournaments played from 8th August to 20th August 1992. We entered two teams to play in their respective age-group matches. Both teams did well. One team emerged as the new Kallang District Champion and the other team became the runner-up.

Our participation in the National Tournament was not so successful as we were in the District Tournaments. Victory eluded us although the players put as best a performance as they could .

Our training sessions will continue on Saturday mornings and we look forward to better results next year.

D -SCHOOL CAMP

The school organised its first Camp outside the school from 16 to 17 November 1992 at the Tanah Merah MOE Campsite. A total of 200 primary five pupils accompanied by 15 teachers and 12 Senior Scouts from the Secondary School attended the Camp. The theme of the camp was "Sharing, enjoying, learning and living together' . The participants lived up to the theme by displaying the spirit of caring and sharing and team work in the various actitvities during their two day stay at the camp. It was indeed a good opportunity for the pupils to acquire skills, develop qualities of leadership, discipline, self-reliance and to widen their educational and social experiences beyong the confines of their home and school. The school intents to make this an annual event in the School's calendar of actitvities.

131 ST FOUNDER'S DAY

4TH SEPTEMBER 1993

.Guest-of-Honour

--· Mr Wee Sip Chee.

My Lord Bishop, members of the Board of Governors, officials from the Ministry of Education, Mr. Harry Tan, parents and well wishers, Saints past and present, honourable ladies and gentlemen.

When Mr. Harry Tan rang me up to invite me here today as Guest of Honour, my immediate reaction was, "Why on earth did he choose me for this role, when t~ere are many more worthy and renowned Saints to choose from? What or where is the catch?" It speaks volumes for his powers of persuasion that despite my innate reluctance to accept his kind invitation, he was able to overcome all my doubts and resistance, and make me stand here now to address you.

We are here today to celebrate the 131st Founder's Day of the School, and it is clear from the School Report which Mr. Harry Tan has just given, that St. Andrew's is still very much alive and vigorously kicking 131 years after its start in 1862.

Most students will have fond memories of the time spent in school, especially if he or she has formed lifelong friendships with fellow students in the same school. So I hope you will bear with me if I hark back to the years I spent in St. Andrew's, from 1932 when I entered Primary One class to 1946 when I got my school certificate. My schooling was interrupted by the Japanese Occupation from 1942 to 1945, but a bit more about that later.

In 1932, the campus of St.Andrew's was in Stamford Road, on the same site presently occupied by the National Library and its extensive car park, stretching all the way to its exit into Armenian Street. The classrooms and administration office of the school then did not have the luxury of being housed in the same building, but were located in about half a dozen separate buildings of different ages design. It may be inferred from this that St.Andrew's did not provide its students with a complete primary cum secondary school education when it first moved to the Stamford campus, but was able to do so only after having expanded in stages. I think it was also clear from the ad hoc manner in which the buildings were put on the Stamford campus could not be redeveloped without undue expense for and disruption of the functioning of the school.

Mr. Joseph Lee was the school principal when I entered St.Andrew's in 1932. He was succeeded by Reverend R.K.S. Adams, who had joined St.Andrerw's in 1929 as a Geography Teacher, and became the Principal on 1st October 1934.

I do not know when the idea of proposal of removal of the entire school to Woodsville was first made but in 1935 (or maybe early 1936), word of this had gone round the whole school, with details coming in later that the campus would be on a 17 acre site, and that the school's contribution towards the cost of putting up the building would

Page 76: UP ANDO...BOARD OF GOVERNORS L to R : Mr Lawrence Teo, Mdm Jacqueline Oehlers, Mr Yee Teck Peng, Bishop Moses Tay, Mr Harry Tan, Mr Tan Soo Kiang, Mr Wong Yew Meng (Seated) L to R

be matched dollar for dollar by the Government. Reverend Adams (later elevated to Canon Adams) was undoubtedly instrumental for building Woodsville campus.as from 1936 onwards he took every possible means to raise money for the Woodsville School Building Fund such as:

1) Approaching St.Andrew's Old Boys.chief executives of companies.foundations etc. for contributions to the Building Fund.

2) Holding school fairs annually. 3) Selling grand stand seats to spectators of the gala evening procession which was held to celebrate the

coronation of King George VI in 1937 and passed along Stamford Road . Light refreshments donated to the school were also sold for the occasions in aid of the Building Fund.

4) Making students of St.Andrew's who could afford it put in their widow's mite by each one giving 5 cents each week for the form teacher to fill up one brick on his card containing a wall of 20 bricks. Did I have a card myself? Yes, I did, though it meant giving up half my weekly allowance of 10 cents for the school tuckshop. I should remark that a plate of "char guo tiow" without egg cost 1 cent in those days.

Canon Adams realized the importance of sporting activities in charter-building, and as school principal , he carried on and expanded on the sporting tradition of St.Andrew's instituted by his predecessors. He started boxing and rugby for the students to make them rugged, and in the case of rugby, to make them realise the importance of team work. As far as I know St.Andrew's was the only school in Singapore to have boxing , which remained on the school 's list of sporting activities. Today, it is still the only school to have boxing .

Among his many invaluable contributions to St.Andrew's was Canon Adam's unrelenting efforts to build up and maintain the name St.Andrew's as a premier school. He made it a business to know many people as possible: his students.their parents.the old boys and in particular people who were influential in the business world, so that he could pick up the phone and get jobs for his school-leavers.His phenomenal memory for names was a by-word among those who knew him.If he came across someone he knew but had not seen for sometime, he would pause briefly and say, "Wait a minute. You are Mr. and Mrs. So and So", and he was generally right.

School had closed for the usual 6-week long holidays when the Japanese started their invasion in North Malaya in December 1941 . As their army advanced closer to Singapore, boy scouts from St.Andrew's like myself were called up and attached to the Registry of Vehicles in Prinsep Street. One of our duties was to help direct lorry drivers with the aid of maps to the remoter parts of Singapore, to pick up people or goods and bring them to the city. On one sombre occasion I had to help the lorry drivers to pick up the fatal casualties of a Japanese air raid and bring them to the mortuary. We would knock off at 6 p.m. each day or later as the occasion demanded. One evening, the lorry I was in returned to the ROV at 8 p.m., and I found myself the only scout to head for my home off the 6th milestone, Upper Serangoon Road on my bicycle. The roads were pitch dark because of the war time blackout and vehicular traffic was almost nil because of petrol rationing . Unfortunately, the way home involved passing three cemeteries in succession , the Bidadari Christian one opposite Youngberg Hospital , the Muslim one opposite Woodleigh Park, and the Ngee Ann Chinese one (now totaly exhumed) at 5th mile Upper Serangoon. It was an unhappy, hair-raising experience. So much fQr boy scout bravery.

After Singapore fell in February 1942, Canon Adams as a priest was allowed by the Japanese to move around on his bicycle to visit the church-goers, including two Eurasian families staying in the same road as I was. When he heard I was staying along the same road , he called on my parents and me. Thereafter, he continued visiting us, to coach me in English and Math until about the middle of 1942, when he was put into an internment camp by the Japanese. I learnt from him that he was coaching a few of my classmates at the same time to prevent us from running to seek due idleness.

When the British returned to Singapore in 1945, I heard that Canon Adams could receive visitors at Sime Road internment camp. A classmate and I lost no time to see him there. We found him sitting on the steps of a wooden barrack in his short pants and bare- bodied with obvious signs of having been underfed .He appeared healthy otherwise. He told us that Rev. A.C. Parr, the chaplain of St. Andrew's had died in internment. and that Francis Thomas (after whom the school drive is named) was still alive . He also said that a resourceful intern in his camp had somehow at the risk to his own life smuggled in some eggs, which he proceeded to sell to his fellow inmates not for Japanese banana notes, but for promissory notes to pay him $5 per egg in Singapore after the war.

St.Andrew's began to function as a school again in January 1946, with Canon Adams as principal . He continued to serve the school until his retirement in 1856. By that time, he had left an indelible mark of himself in the

THE AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE

I can still remember the day we left, a norde of twenty-three Saints, all so spiffingly dressed in school blazers, polished shoes complete with a little Merlion tiepin. For the next three weeks, we were going to be as our principal

Mr. Tan put it, 'ambassadors' for Singapore as well as our school. As we trooped past the departure gates, I recall all of us waving to our families with promises to write each day.

The very second we arrived in Adelaide, all thoughts of Singapore were forgotten. True, the days in Adelaide were fantastic and fun-filled but it did nothing to prepare us for the fun we were about to experience in Melbourne. None of us slept a wink. We were up the entire night playing board games, waiting in anticipation for the morning and the things it would bring.

At last we arrived at the station and were received by Mr. Neville Wilson and Ms. Jennifer Barclay. A coach had already been arranged and we boarded it and headed for our first stop; Caulfield Campus, where we waved goodbye to ten saints. Half an hour later, twelve other saints and I would be designated to the Wheeler's Hill campus. This was when we finally met our hosts and their families. After all the formalities of introduction and last minute instructions by Mr. Carey, we were allowed to return with our host families. For me, this was

when the holiday actually began.

My host family the Deeneys are wonderful and since I was their 'son' for the next two weeks, the amount of love and generosity they showered me has earned them a place in my heart where only love ones dwell. Never in my life have I enjoyed being a guest so much. I will never forget how the Deeneys unselfishly made me feel a part of

their family and made my stay there an extremely memorable one. As for the Australian counterparts of the Saints in Wheeler's Hill Campus they were truly a rowdy lot. By the end of the exchange, we had all become a closely-knit bunch of friends.

School life in Australia is so much fun. The Australians take life more light-heartedly compared to us in Singapore. This carefree attitude of theirs helped all of us loosen-up and let loose our inhibitions.

Over the next two weeks, Wheeler's Hill Campus organized many excursions for the Saints which we fully appreciated. On these outings, we managed to see Australia in al l its glory. We visited many old buildings like

the Old Parliament House and the Museum

Soon it was time to say goodbye. With hugs and fond farewells we departed from Melbourne knowing for sure we would miss Melbourne and the many new friends we made there. Very soon in January 1994, the Australian boys will be back to keep their half of the bargain, so to speak. And when they do, I urge all Saints to make their holiday here as memorable as they did for us when we were there.

EDUCATIONAL TOUR OF KUCHING AN RCLMS PROJECT

15TH - 19TH JUNE 1993

The participants of the RCLMS (Remedial Chinese Language Materials for Secondary Schools} went on an educational tour to Kuching lasting five days. We took Singapore Airlines, Flight SQ186 to Kuching . When we reached

Kuching , we had packed lunch before we were whizzed off to the Kuching Museum, a treasure house that accommodates Sarawak's archaeological discoveries from the stone age. Then, we were supposed to go to Fort Margherita but unfortunately, the heavy rain made it impossible for us to proceed. After checking into a hotel , we had dinner at a restaurant. The next day, we went to the Sarawak Cultural Village which enable us to learn much about their culture and crafts. After lunch, we had an afternoon of leisure, after which we were tired but excited about the next day's programme.

On the third day, after breakfast, we visited the Semonggok Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. The twenty minute walk there was a good experience for some of us. On the fourth day, we visited a real long house. It is accessible only by road which took us one and a half hours. We then had another afternoon of leisure. After dinner, we packed out luggage and prepared to head for home the next day. On the fifth day, we went to the Kuching Airport and took flight

SQ185 back to Singapore. This indeed was a successful and memorable trip for us.
