Mobile TechnologyTeacher Use Out of and In Classroom
Research Problem•Computer ratios in schools
dropping.
•1:1 a goal in many areas.
•Small mobile devices being used in many places.
•Teacher pedagogical style dictates how tech is used in classrooms (Weston & Bain 2010 and others)
Research Question Formulation
•Schools are introducing (or allowing) mobile technology into classrooms.
•Teachers are still the ‘gate keepers’ of use. (Bebel & Kay 2009)
•How do teachers use mobile technology in their personal lives?
•How does mobile technology get integrated into classroom practice?
Theoretical Framework
•Fini (2009) argued that users choice of tools depend on personal preference and comfort in an online class setting.
•Does this hold true for choice and use of mobile devices for teachers in classrooms?
•Determining teachers comfort and skill level with personal tools may indicate how they chose to integrate in classroom
Evidence and Collection
•Instrument to collect data being developed.
•Survey that will ask about teachers use of mobile devices in personal use and in classroom use.
•Data gathering in a school with iPods in use in classroom as a pilot project.
•Instrument validation.
Indicators and Framework
Communicational Order
InformationalOrder
Epistemological Order
Technical Order
1.Frequency of use2.Confidence
Social Order

Survey Instrument•Questions to address mobile use.
•What devices teachers have.
•How they use them.
•Frequency and Confidence.
•How they are used in classrooms.
•Will be combination of several other surveys. (Pew 2010, Milken Exchange, Fini, 2009)
Summary
•Does teachers personal use of mobile technology predict classroom use?
•May be able to draw some ideas from the data and look for connections.
•Instrument validation based on frameworks will allow it to be used in other studies.
