Information for students

Paper 1 – READING AND WRITING

What do I have to do in the test?Write your answers on the answer sheet. You will not have time to transfer your answers at the end of the test.

Part 1• You have to match five sentences (1-5) with the correct notice (A-H).• There will be an example and two extra notices you will not need to use.• Read the sentences and notices very carefully; ones which have the same words do not always

have the same meaning.• Don’t worry if there are some words you don’t understand in the notices. You are only

expected to understand the gist (main idea) of each notice.

Part 2• You have to read some sentences. The sentences make up a short story.• In each sentence there is a gap with three multiple-choice options.• You have to choose the correct word to fill each gap from the options A, B or C.• The words can be verbs, adjectives or nouns.• Read each sentence carefully before choosing the missing word. Make sure you understand what

the sentence means before deciding on your answer.• You should not spend more than 5 or 6 minutes on this part of the test.

Part 3• There are two parts to part 3. For questions 11-15 you have to choose the best phrase/

sentence to complete a two-line dialogue.• For questions 16-20, you have to complete a dialogue by choosing the correct missing

sentences from a list (A-H).• There will be an example and two extra sentences you will not need to use.• Here you should read the whole dialogue through once before deciding on your answers.• You need to look at what the person says before and after each gap to make sure the

sentence you choose fits properly.

Part 4• You have to read a text and then answer seven multiple-choice questions. There will be an

example to help you.• Read the instructions carefully. Sometimes you have to choose between ‘A’ Right, ‘B’ Wrong

or ‘C’ Doesn’t Say. Sometimes you will have a choice of answers A, B or C to choose from. There is usually only one text but sometimes there may be three short texts.

• Read the questions quickly and then read the text all the way through before you try to answer the questions.

• This is not a vocabulary matching exercise! You have to read each part of the text very carefully to find the correct answer. The correct answer will be the one with the same meaning (not necessarily the same words as the text).

• Don’t worry if there are some words you don’t understand. It may be possible to guess the meaning from the context. The important thing is to focus on understanding the main ideas.

• You may need to spend a little longer on this part of the test (but not more than 15 minutes)

Page 7: untitled []€¦  · Web viewMake sure you know the spellings of words like these. For some other words it does not matter if you spell the word incorrectly. You will not lose marks

KET Practice Tests Extra - Blackcat © 2011 De Agostini Scuola S.p.A. - Novara

Information for students

Part 5• You have to read a text with some missing words.• You have to choose the correct missing word for each gap from a choice of three multiple-

choice options.• You should read the text all the way through to get a general understanding before trying to fill

the gaps. Decide if the text is about the past, present or future.• Then look at the multiple-choice options. Decide which word fits best. Look at the words

before and after each gap to help you.• You should not spend more than 10 minutes on this part of the test.

Part 6• You have to read five sentences which each describe a word. You must identify the words and

write them in the correct place on the Answer Sheet.• There will be an example to help you.• The first letter of each word is given.• You must spell the word correctly.• There is only one possible answer for each word.• All the words are connected to the same topic.

Part 7• You have to complete a letter by filling in the gaps.• Read the letter all the way through so you understand what it is about before you try and fill

in the gaps. There will be an example to help you.• You should only write ONE word for each gap.• You should not spend more than 10 minutes on this part of the test.

Part 8• You have to read some information (e.g. a notice and an email or a ticket and an advertisement)

and use this information to complete some notes, a diary or some kind of booking form.• You must pretend to be the person completing the information – so when it says,

Name: ................. for example, don’t write your own name!• You only need to write one or two words.• Sometimes you will be asked to write down a date or a price. You need to read the two pieces

of information carefully to get the right answer because there may be more than one date or price given.

• You must spell all the words correctly so be very careful not to make mistakes when copying words.

Part 9• You have to write a short note, email, postcard or message.• You must read the instructions carefully and write down the THREE pieces of information

asked for.• Sometimes you have to follow instructions and sometimes you will have a short note, email or

message to answer.• Use your imagination. It doesn’t matter if what you write is true or not. The important thing is

to give all the necessary information and to write complete sentences.• Don’t worry too much about making spelling or grammar mistakes. In this part of the test the

examiners want to see if you can successfully communicate a message in English.• You should not spend more than 10 minutes on this question.

Information for students

Paper 2 – LISTENING

What do I have to do in the test? You should write your answer on the question paper. You will have time to transfer your answers to the answer sheet at the end of the test.

Part 1• You will hear five short conversations between two people. There will also be an example. You will

hear each conversation twice.• You will have time to read the questions before you listen.• You must listen and choose the correct answer A, B or C.• Each of the three options, A, B and C will be mentioned in the conversation, so you have to listen

very carefully to make sure you choose the correct answer.

Part 2• You will hear a conversation between two people. You will hear this conversation twice.• You have to match two lists; e.g. the names of people and the food they like. You will hear the

information in the same order as list 1-5.• Sometimes you will not hear exactly the same words that are on the lists because the

speakers use different ways to say the same thing. For example, boat ride and river trip.• Remember that you only have to match five items on the first list (1-5) with five items from list

(A-H). Two items in this list are there to distract you and one is the example.• You may hear all of these words (A-H) in the conversation so you need to think carefully before

you choose the correct item in list (A-H).

Part 3• You will hear a conversation between two people. It may be a conversation between friends or

it may be a conversation in a shop or restaurant etc. You will hear this conversation twice.• You will have time to read the questions through before you listen. This will help you to know

what information you need to listen for.• You have to read the questions and as you listen choose the correct answer A, B or C. The

questions are in the same order as the information in the conversation.• Don’t worry if you miss one of the answers, you can listen for it the second time you hear the

recording. It is important to keep going because otherwise you may miss the answer to the next question.

• Sometimes, you will not hear exactly the same words that are in the questions because the speakers use different ways to say the same thing. The important thing is to choose the answer with the correct meaning.

• Usually all the options A, B and C are mentioned in the conversation. You have to decide which one is the correct answer to show that you really understand what is being said. You should always guess if you are not sure.

Parts 4 and 5• In part 4 you will hear a conversation between two people. In part 5 you will hear only one person

talking. You will hear both parts 4 and 5 twice.• For both parts 4 and 5, you must listen and complete the notes. There are five gaps to fill and

there will also be an example.• You only need to write ONE or TWO words.• You will have a few seconds to read the information on the question paper before you listen.

Use this time to try and predict the kind of information you need to listen for. Ask yourself: Do I need to listen for a name, a time, a date, a price, a telephone number? etc.

Questions 21-27

Read the article about the Winter Olympics. Are sentences 21-27 ‘Right’ (A) or ‘Wrong’ (B)?If there is not enough information to answer ‘Right’ (A) or ‘Wrong’ (B), choose ‘Doesn’t say’ (C).For questions 21-27, mark A, B or C on your answer sheet.

The Winter Olympics

In 1924 both the summer and the first winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix. The new winter games were very small compared to the winter Olympics we know today. There were only six competitions, including skiing races, ice skating and ice hockey.

At Chamonix there were 300 athletes, but only thirteen of these were women. At the first games of the 21st century in Salt Lake City in 2002 there were over two thousand sportsmen and women in seventy-eight competitions but still only around a quarter of these were women. The number of

countries taking part has not grown very much because there are not as many countries that have the right weather to do winter sports.

Norway won the most gold medals at Chamonix but their most famous sports star didn’t win anything. In fact she came last! However, this was because Sonja Henie was only 11 years old at the time. She went on to win three gold medals for skating in the next three Winter Olympic games.

Both the winter and summer games were in France in 1924 but that soon changed. Since 1928 the summer and winter games have always been in different countries and since 1994 they have not even been in the same year.

How can I prepare for Part 7 of the test?

◆ Practise doing this kind of exercise. Remember Part 7 is testing grammar and spelling, not vocabulary so you need to focus on the structural words like auxiliaries (have, be), prepositions (in, on, up, down etc.), articles (a, an, the), verb forms, modals (can, may, must), pronouns (she, his, it, their etc.), adverbs (well, fast, enough, quickly, many, much, ago, soon, before, after etc.), adjectives (good, nice, hot etc.), comparatives (better, nicer etc.), linkers (and, then, because etc.).

◆ Make sure you can spell these words correctly.◆ Sometimes there may be more than one correct answer but you should only write

ONE word in each space.
