Held in idyllic Basel (Switzerland) between 18-20th Feb 2014. 16
Students from LBS had the opportunity to meet with five
innovative healthcare companies: Actelion, Boston Scientific,
Novartis, Nestle & Roche Diagnostics. Visiting these companies
highlighted the breadth of opportunities within the healthcare
industry and the diversity of people within it. The students also
had the opportunity to interact with LBS alumni working in Basel
and gained an invaluable insight into working within healthcare
after LBS.

INTERVIEW WITH A NOVARTIS INTERN
Priyanka Kashyap:[email protected]
Q: Where did you intern and why? A: I interned
at the Novartis in Basel. I wanted to work with
Novartis as they are one of the leading
healthcare companies and I really liked the team
when I met them during the Healthcare Swiss
Trek in 2013. The project itself was very inter-
esting as it looked at trends in healthcare by
focusing on a few countries representing differ-
ent healthcare systems and economies.
Q: Most valuable thing you gained? A: There are
two important things that I learned during the
internship. One was developing a strong under-
standing of the different healthcare systems
across the world and second was getting a
sense of the dynamics of working in the
headquarters of a large corporation. I believe
both lessons were very valuable.
Q: Most challenging aspect ? A: Per-
sonally, I found the pace of work very
different when working within a large
global company versus when working
in consulting (my previous experience).
It is useful to plan your project to ac-
count for the dependency on others
within the organization. My manager
was very supportive and helpful so it
was much easier to complete the pro-
ject as planned but it can sometimes be a
challenge.

Sugar Tax. The WHO has suggested we
should aim to eat less than 5% of our
calorific intake in the form of sugar. The
WHO’s official recommendations remain
at 10% at present but policymakers are
seeking to minimize our sugar
consumption. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-

In the UK, Chief Medical Officer Dame
Sally Davies has also suggested a sugar
tax may be needed to help fight rising
obesity levels. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-

Second hand smoke. There are no safe
levels of second hand smoke! It was
shown that if both parents smoke it can
effect a child’s health in the future. It is
suspected that up to 300 000 kids visit
GPs each year in the UK with smoke
related illness. British MPs have
supported a ban on smoking in cars
carrying children. Similar bans are already
in place in states such as California, some
areas of Canada and Australia .

HIV Research. Researchers at the AIDS
Research Center at Rockefeller University
have found that monkeys injected with
long – acting HIV medication were
protected against disease. Could this be
translated into humans and improve
adherence to anti-retro viral treatment? www.nytimes.com/2014/03/05/health/

More exciting news in the fight against
HIV—researchers are hopeful after
successfully eradicating the HIV virus
through the use of anti-retroviral
treatment (ART) shortly after birth in an
infant born in California . This is the
second case where it has been
demonstrated that the use of ART
following birth in HIV positive newborns
can be curative.…………………………………….. www.nytimes.com/2014/03/06/health/second
