This evening is an opportunity to recognise and reward a select group of individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities. The focus of the CO3 Award ceremony is to give prominence to the accomplishments of individuals who exceed the scope of what is expected in their organisations and communities. It is a rare moment in our calendar to pause, applaud and be proud of the leadership excellence that exists within our sector.

Everybody who has been shortlisted this evening falls into the category of being exceptional. These are words that I do not use lightly. Extraordinary individuals who are leading forward, who are living and breathing a strong values base, whose drive and determination has been translated into leadership and success. Whose commitment to the community has been expressed in leadership positions which have positively impacted on changing and saving lives. To everybody who has been shortlisted be proud of this prestigious recognition.

PAUL BRAITHWAITE Programme Leader, Building Change Trust

Paul Braithwaite is Programme Leader with the Building Change Trust in Northern Ireland, leading their work on Social and Democratic Innovation. Since joining the Trust in 2013 Paul has developed and delivered a number of new initiatives for the Trust using research, grant-making, facilitated dialogue and international learning exchanges to stimulate new collaborations and initiatives around the themes of deliberative democracy and social innovation. These have included a Civic Activism Programme, the NI Open Government Network, Social Innovation NI and the Techies in Residence Programme, as well as emerging new initiatives on Participatory Budgeting and Citizens’ Assemblies.

Prior to joining Building Change Trust, Paul’s background was in international development, a subject in which he holds a Masters degree, and he worked for international NGOs for around 10 years including periods based in Pakistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo where he developed and managed programmes with local civil society on themes including civic engagement, participatory governance, gender equality, bonded labour, human rights and disaster preparedness and response.

NIGEL CRAWFORD Executive Director, Quilter Cheviot

Nigel is an Executive Director at Quilter Cheviot and Head of Belfast Office. Whilst managing portfolios on a daily basis, he also has responsibility for a highly skilled team of Investment Managers and administrators.

The team is committed to providing clients with a very professional service, fine attention to detail and is focused on delivering portfolios which are tailored to individual client requirements. Nigel is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.

Nigel has over 37 years’ experience in the financial services industry, 20 years of which has been specialising in private client investment management. In 2008, Nigel was instrumental in the establishment of the Belfast office. He has a long track record of managing portfolios for Private Individuals, Charities, Pensions and Corporate clients. He has built an excellent team of very professional colleagues who have a proven long term track record of managing portfolios to achieve client desired outcomes. Nigel previously worked at Northern Bank Limited, where he was Senior Investment Manager.

ANNE DONAGHY Chief Executive, Mid and East Antrim Council

Anne was Chief Executive of Ballymena Borough Council since January 2009, until taking up the position of Chief Executive of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in February 2014.

She has a rich background of experience across Local Government, and for many years has successfully fulfilled a range of posts from front line service delivery, to strategic planning.

Anne is also the SOLACE Rep for the PCSP and has a keen interest in reducing crime and improving the quality of life. Anne has been a key champion and advocate of community planning and has delivered Putting People First, the first community plan for the Mid and East Antrim area. Community safety and cohesion is one of the plan’s key priorities. Anne sees the Support Hub model as an excellent vehicle to help some of the most vulnerable citizens in her area.

Anne is a member of SOLACE, the Institute of Directors (IOD), the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and a member of the Institute of Public Health.

MARGARET HADDOCK Chief Executive, Orchardville Society Margaret has been employed by Orchardville for over 20 years and has been employed in several positions within the organisation. She was Deputy Chief Executive for over 14 years and is now the Chief Executive. She was awarded an MBE for her work with disability in 2014.

Her vision of preparing young people and adults with learning disability for employment and greater independence is firmly embedded in Orchardville through the Social Enterprise and Supported Employment models. Margaret has spearheaded Supported Employment not only in Orchardville, but throughout NI and Europe. Margaret is Chair of the Northern Ireland Union of Supported Employment (NIUSE) and President of the European Union of Supported Employment (EUSE) and uses her role to promote the vision of assisting people with significant disabilities and disadvantages access real employment opportunities, of their own choice, in an integrated setting with appropriate ongoing support to become economically and socially active in their own communities.

Margaret continues to grow Orchardville’s range of services in line with service user demands and has grown the organisation geographically over the past years. When she is not working to promote Orchardville, supported employment and the rights of people with learning disability, Margaret enjoys spending time with her family, travelling and is known to play a mean hand of Bridge!

DAVID LANE Managing Director, Ecclesiastical Insurance

David Lane was appointed Managing Director of Ecclesiastical Insurance, Ireland in January 2012. David leads a team of 35 people based in Ireland. He is a member of the Ireland Management Oversight Committee and several of the Ecclesiastical Group Management Boards

A graduate of University College Dublin and a Certified Insurance Director, he has 30 years’ experience in the insurance/financial services area.

David started his career with the insurance broker Coyle Hamilton (now Willis Ireland) before moving into a more general financial services role with Irish Life Finance Group (now KBC Bank).

David set up and developed the Transamerica Insurance Finance Company (TIFCO) business in Ireland and moved to the insurance division of General Electric as the General Manager of their Irish business in 2000.

He spent 12 years with GE (later to become Genworth Financial) in several senior roles across Ireland, UK and Europe, the last of which was Managing Director – Western Europe.

DONAL LAVERTY Consulting Partner, Baker Tilly Mooney Moore

Donal Laverty is the Consulting Partner in Baker Tilly Mooney Moore and leads the Organisational Transformation Consulting service. Donal has just over twenty years’ experience of working in consulting and industry in senior positions. He specialises in organisation review, organisation design and restructuring – including options appraisal, operational and systems modelling, design assessment, evaluation and implementation planning, managing, transition and benefits realisation.

In his career, Donal has been a HR Director of a major logistics company as well as operating as head of consulting on a global scale. He has acted as a trusted strategic advisor to many well-known organisations as they have designed and implemented major change programmes. His work revolves around creating more effective and higher performance organisations with tangible results at the bottom line.

For nine years Donal was based in London where he led a range of major change consulting assignments on behalf of a range of private and public organisations including central government (Education and Health); local government and the NHS. He has worked extensively with the Third sector in supporting organisations transform their service delivery and operating models to achieve financial sustainability. Donal has also worked extensively in the corporate sector with a particular focus in financial services, banks and professional services sectors.

GORDON MCDADE Director, Gordon McDade Consulting

Gordon is an experienced Executive Coach, mentor, mediator and consultant, with particular experience in the third, community and voluntary and faith sectors. He spent twenty five years as a church pastor in a variety of contexts from inner city to suburban and rural, leading large staff teams and driven by a passion to see faith communities engage meaningfully with their local contexts through creative community projects. He trained in coaching at Queen’s University, Belfast and has worked with senior leaders in the third sector through CO3, in personal and leadership development. He is also an experienced Mediator and works as an Associate of Mediation Northern Ireland and more recently with Tides Training.

He has experience of consultancy projects especially in the faith sector, currently working in the lower Shankill helping churches to engage with their communities and more widely in the Diocese of Connor in a parish development role within a fresh expression of faith community called Space within St Patrick’s Parish, Jordanstown. Gordon is convinced that the faith sector has real potential for community transformation. He also graduated in social enterprise from the University of Ulster Business School and works with Social Enterprise NI in helping to develop entrepreneurs and new businesses. He works for Urban Expression, an organisation which seeks to plant faith communities in impoverished parts of cities. He is a member of the Corrymeela Community and a trustee of Family Mediation Northern Ireland.

NEIL MCLEESE Director, Personnel and Training Services Ltd

Neil is a Director of Personnel & Training Services Ltd which is a locally based consulting firm that supplies outsourced HR support, recruitment services, training and development programmes and workplace mediation services to a wide range of clients across Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

Neil has worked within HR since 2003 and prior to joining Personnel & Training Services Ltd was HR Manager for the Builders Merchant, JP Corry (part of the Saint Gobain plc group). In this role, he was responsible for the organisation’s HR function across its all-Ireland branch network.

In addition, Neil was also a Director of a Belfast based charitable organisation and was a committee member for the NI Branch of the CIPD.

Neil’s experience is supported by a BA Degree in HRM, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Human Resources Management, NEBOSH General Certificate and membership of the CIPD.

SHARON POLSON Head of Policy and Innovation, Department for Communities

Sharon is Head of Policy and Innovation in the Department for Communities Voluntary and Community Directorate. The Voluntary and Community Directorate supports a vibrant, effective and more sustainable Voluntary & Community Sector (VCS) which contributes across a range of policy areas enabling the VCS to deliver positive outcomes for citizens in Northern Ireland.

On secondment from Invest NI since December 2014, she heads up a team responsible for investing in support for enterprise and innovation in the Voluntary and Community Sector. Specific initiatives include future RISP support; Community Asset Transfer (CAT); social innovation with DfC leading a Social Innovation Working Group; investments in Inspiring Impact - a UK wide programme to imbed impact practice in the Voluntary and Community Sector and; Social Enterprise Hubs supporting new social enterprise ideas, bringing about more economic and social benefits to communities across Northern Ireland.

BEST NEWCOMERAwarded to a leader who has made an outstanding contribution to their organisation, or the wider sector, during their short time in post (less than four years). Finalists in this category will be able to show outstanding passion, dedication and solid commitment to the Third Sector and the organisation they lead. They will have a clear understanding of how to develop and implement long-lasting strategies that positively impact on the Third Sector.

The person will have demonstrated dedication, professionalism and integrity throughout their career, and who has produced an identifiably profound effect on the sector through their leadership over at least a 20-year period.

Charlotte Dryden is the Chief Executive of the award winning Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast, a dedicated music hub for the city. Charlotte has been involved in the Northern Irish music community for more than 15 years and has a background in leadership, music and festival programming, venue and event management, music media, as well as working with key music industry bodies and not-for-profit organisations. Since 2008, she has worked at Oh Yeah, rising to the position of Creative Development Director and then CEO. She initiated several of the key programmes at the centre including Women’s Work, a unique and groundbreaking festival for Belfast celebrating women. She has been a driving force for diversity and change in music and is passionate about promoting the contribution that Northern Ireland makes culturally, artistically and musically. In 2010 Charlotte was presented with a special achievement award at the Belfast Media Group Top 40 Under 40 Awards for her services to music in the community. Charlotte was also a finalist at the Belfast Telegraph Arts Category at the Woman of The Year Awards in 2012.

Since returning to Northern Ireland in 2015 Annette has led VIable Corporate Services as Chief Executive Officer developing the organisation to deliver a range of professional back office services including Human Resources, Bookkeeping, Payroll, Procurement and Strategy. VIable has grown significantly since 2015 and currently delivers services to a range of 3rd Sector organisations across Northern Ireland with all profits from VIable being re-invested by shareholders Voice of Young People in Care (VOYPIC) and Include Youth to assist them in delivering improved services to their young people.

VIable is focused on scaling the efficiencies of out sourcing professional back office services to third sector organisations. This approach to back office services ensures that clients receive value for money as well as create efficiencies in allocating finite human resources by upskilling inhouse teams and focusing on delivering outcomes to their clients.

Over 19 years’ experience in the not for profit sector in both local charities and larger NGOs in UK and Ireland with some time spent in Boston Mass USA in the early days. Experience includes 12 years in senior management positions. Key areas of experience are in: Strategy and Organisation Development, Brand and Marketing, Fundraising (public, private and Institutional), organisation management, project design, planning and implementation.

As Director in War on Want NI, she oversees organisation strategic development and management in Northern Ireland and countries of operation, reporting to the Board with responsibility for the overseas operations including overseas office, project delivery and compliance. She is currently leading a significant strategic change of direction for the organisation which will be launched in Spring 2018.

Margaret Kelly has been Director of Mencap in Northern Ireland since September 2015. She has over 25 years’ experience in the voluntary and community sector, working primarily with families and children’s charities. Margaret has previously held leading roles in Barnardo’s NI and The Fostering Network. She has worked with the NI Assembly and a range of government departments on the development and improvement of policy and practice for families. Margaret has extensive experience in commissioning, managing and publishing research, as well as ensuring that both policy and practice are underpinned by an evidence base.

Gail started in Play Resource as a summer student worker in 1990. In 2002 she was offered a post working as a part time administrator under a temporary contract. After the contract ended Gail was employed in another Arts organisation – Arts for All but returned to Play Resource when she became a PA to the Co-ordinator in 2004. In 2007 Gail became the Deputy Director of Play Resource. In October 2014 she became Director. Since her appointment she has been instrumental in driving the organisation forward and raising its profile. This has been achieved through reviewing each area of the organisation and implementing new marketing strategies

Dawn was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly from March 2007-May 2011, representing the East Belfast constituency, first as a member of the Progressive Unionist Party and subsequently as an independent. Born in Belfast, Dawn joined the PUP in 1994 and first stood for the party in the elections to the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996. Dawn was involved with various rounds of peace process negotiations before, during and after the Good Friday Agreement.

Since becoming CEO of Victoria Housing Estates in October 2016, Dawn has lead a programme of intense change in the charity including a restructure of the organisation, its staff and systems and the publication and implementation of its first ever strategic and operational plans.

In her spare time Dawn continues to serve as a trustee for various charities who work to tackle health and socio-economic disadvantage and exclusion.

Brenda Kelly, born in Northern Ireland and a Graduate of Queen’s University of Belfast, has worked for over 25 years in the voluntary/community sector and local government both in England and Northern Ireland. Brenda has a talent and strong track record for developing projects and initiatives from scratch and building them to become lasting and sustainable services. She is an innovative, strategic thinker who harnesses her networking skills to build relationships and develop strong partnerships.

She is passionate about supporting people and organisations to build their skills and develop their capacity in order to be better able to deliver their work in local communities. Brenda believes that by building the skills of local groups and people that communities become more empowered and resilient. Brenda is the National Manager for Northern Ireland for Sported, one of the leading Sport for Development charities in the UK, helping more than 3,000 community sport and youth groups survive and thrive. Sported members use the power of sport to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people and build stronger, safer communities.

Frances has extensive experience of leading programmes of support to organisations on using evidence and measuring impact. She currently leads on NCB’s provision of this support to the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust and to a number of Government Departments on their Programme for Government delivery plans. Her work includes a programme of Outcomes Based Accountability (OBA) capacity building and support with implementation of OBA across directorates in SEHSCT and across all Policing and Community Safety Partnerships. Similarly, on behalf of Colin Early Intervention Community, Frances leads on implementing OBA with a wide range of key stakeholders (for example, commissioners, funders, service providers).

Frances is also responsible for the development and delivery of NCB’s training and support curriculum which operates across the public, community and voluntary sector and focuses on improving the use of evidence to make better decisions on programme design and delivery to secure better outcomes for children. She has supported the use of evidence and impact measurement on all projects within the cross-departmental £30m Early Intervention Transformation Programme, ensuring that improved outcomes for children and families remains the focus at all times. Frances is a researcher by background and at NCB has led on a number of influential studies for example: Childminding in Northern Ireland, which examined childminding practice and quality in Northern Ireland; Next Steps, a study examining the reasons why some young people become NEET (not in education, employment or training); ICT and Me, which explores young people’s use of ICT and their educational attainment and The Dissemination of Best Practice Research recently commissioned by the Dept of Education (forthcoming).

Jim graduated in Housing from the University of Ulster in 1995, and since then has held a number of positions in the social housing sector incorporating housing management, policy, finance, and property maintenance & investment. He has over 15 years Senior Management experience in Social Housing, and has held the post of Interim Chief Executive at Ark Housing Association since January 2017 where he embarked on leading a programme of organisational renewal. Jim gained a Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Leadership in 2014 and is also a former Non Executive Director of the Council for the Homeless N.I.

Jim O’Callaghan joined Housing Rights in 1989 and is currently Head of Operations for the charity. As a member of the senior leadership team Jim oversees all the organisations’ quality and impact work and is responsible for monitoring service and client data.

Jim previously held local and national roles in Citizens Advice Bureau and has over thirty years experience of working in the voluntary and community sector. He helped establish the Children’s Law Centre in Belfast and sits on the Board of Advice NI.

Outside his work with Housing Rights Jim has enjoyed holding various positions with a local GAA club.

Director of Football Development – responsible for developing and delivering Let Them Play, a ten-year youth football strategy 2015-2025 for Northern Ireland which reaches 70,000 young people. Let Them Play has doubled participation figures since 2014 and has mainstreamed disability football targets, health and education targets, promoting football for all.In 2000 Michael became the youngest European A Licence Coach in NI and in 2004 he became the youngest member of the Irish FA’s Strategic Leadership Team. Michael is the man responsible for the Irish FA’s international award winning Football For All campaign which transformed the face of NI football. In 2016 Michael set up the Irish FA Foundation, a charity which uses football as a hook to promote health, education and good relations.Michael has a master’s in Communications and a degree in Sports Studies from Ulster University.

Martin Flynn has been the Chief Executive of Open College Network Northern Ireland (OCN NI) since June 2015. Prior to that he was the Acting Chief Executive for a period of 18 months. He took up the post during challenging circumstances and has made an outstanding contribution to the success of OCN NI during this short period.

During his time in post, Martin has positioned OCN NI as one of the leading Awarding Organisations in Northern Ireland and achieved externally regulated status for OCN NI from both Ofqual and CCEA Regulation. The organisation works closely in partnership with education and training providers to develop and award professional and technical (vocational) qualifications from Entry Level to Level 5 across a wide range of subject areas. He also successfully registered OCN NI as a recognised charity and is committed to ensuring that learners of all ages and abilities maximise their potential.

Margaret Henry leads the overall strategic planning and direction of thrive audience development (formerly Audiences NI). She is responsible for developing partnerships across the cultural sector and delivering good governance, impact and sustainability. She has extensive strategic marketing and leadership experience across the public and cultural sectors and was previously Head of Marketing for BBC Sport and Radio 5live. Margaret is on the Board of Building Change Trust and was previously Chair of the Old Museum arts centre and Community Relations in Schools.

In January 2015, Heather joined Northern Ireland Hospice, located in north Belfast, as Chief Executive Officer. She commenced her nursing career in 1993, studying at the prestigious Queen’s University Belfast and later working at the both the Royal and Mater Hospitals in Belfast.

As a senior nurse leader with over 20 years’ experience, Heather has worked in the public and charity sector, specializing in palliative care and leadership, both at a clinical level and at a leadership and management level. Committed to lifelong learning, she completed with distinction the MSc (Hons) in Executive Leadership in 2011 (Ulster University), equipping her to lead strategic organisational change programmes resulting in high quality, effective and efficient services delivered by an expert workforce. She has expertise in charity and clinical quality governance, quality improvement, project management and transformational change.

Originally from Scotland, Margaret lived and worked in Switzerland and Canada for some years before settling in Northern Ireland.

In over thirty years in Further Education she had varied responsibilities, being at one time or another responsible for General Education, Catering, Hairdressing, Music, Performing Arts, Art and Design, Recreation and Leisure and Adult Education, including Basic Skills and other courses suitable for returners who had been out of education and training for a long time. Seeing the pride and pleasure gained from progress made once the initial step had been taken is always gratifying.

Margaret has been a member of numerous public bodies, including an eight-year stint on the Western Education and Library Board.

Norman was originally appointed to Council in June 2009 but stood down in January 2010 to temporarily take up the position of the charity’s Chief Operating Officer, a position from which he retired in April 2011. Appointed at the AGM in 2011 as Chairman, Norman has a wealth of business and professional experience gained whilst working for many years in a range of finance positions within the Northern Ireland Health Service.

Noreen has worked as a television, radio and newspaper journalist in a career spanning four decades. A former Religious Affairs correspondent for BBC Northern Ireland, she was also a reporter there for many years, covering a wide range of stories during “The Troubles” and in the period following the conflict.

Before joining the BBC, she worked for national, regional and local newspapers in Northern Ireland and in Britain after graduating from Ulster University (then called the New University of Ulster) with a degree in History. An award-winning journalist, Noreen also taught post-conflict journalism to television and radio journalists in Kosovo and Serbia. She now works as a freelance journalist based in Belfast.

She has served for almost 12 years on the board of Nexus NI. It is a local charity that provides specialist services and support to victims and survivors of sexual violence including those who have experienced rape and sexual assault. It offers counselling in thirty centres across Northern Ireland including Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Portadown and Enniskillen.

Stanley J Goudie, CBE joined the teaching profession in 1973 and left in 1985. During his time in post-primary education in Northern Ireland (NI), he was a teacher of science, a head of science and the vice-principal of a purpose-built, community high school in County Antrim.

In 1985, he joined the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) as a specialist inspector of physics. Shortly after his appointment, he was posted to Omagh in County Tyrone, where he remained the District Inspector for Schools in the Omagh area until 1996. In October of that year, he was promoted to Principal Inspector for science in NI and, in the following year, left County Tyrone to live again in County Antrim. In October 2001, Stanley was promoted to Assistant Chief Inspector with responsibility for Policy, Planning and Improvement; on 1 September 2008, he was promoted to Chief Inspector of the ETI, based within the then Department of Education in Bangor County Down.

Stanley retired from post in February 2011. Later in 2011, Stanley became a Trustee with the charity, Action for Children, and established, and then chaired, the NI Committee for Action for Children. His six years as a Trustee came to an end in December 2017.

Stanley is married to Heather and has a daughter Zoe and a son Lee, and two (beloved) grandchildren Benjamin and Philippa. He loves gardening and DIY, and his favourite holiday locations are the North Coast of NI and the Vendee region of France.

Sid served an apprenticeship as a compositor, studied at Ruskin College Oxford, was a trade union official and Deputy General Secretary of NIPSA before serving as Chairman of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Chairman of the Local Government Staff Commission. He was also Chairman of the Public Service Commission and a Civil Service Commissioner.

In a voluntary capacity Sid has served as a charity trustee on the Board of Habinteg (NI), Threshold (the mental health charity), as Patron of the Council for the Homeless (NI), as President of the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (NI), as Chairman of the Rethinking Construction Centre, and as Chairman and Board member of the Lyric Theatre. He is currently Chairman of NIACRO and NI Co-Ownership Housing Association.

Joanne Ballentine is project lead for Northern Ireland Hospice “Hospice Enabled Dementia Partnerships, (HEDP)” which is a three year project funded by Atlantic Philanthropies to improve access for people with Dementia to Specialist Palliative Care.

Joanne has been a Nurse for over 30 years and has worked as part of the dynamic Northern Ireland Hospice team for the past 17 yrs, holding various nursing roles within the organisation. She came to HEDP project in 2015, with specialist qualifications in Palliative Care but has since developed knowledge and skills in Dementia, focusing on the palliative symptom management and end of life support of persons with Dementia and their Carers.

Aidan Byrne is the Co-Founder and Chair of Street Soccer NI and the Manager of East Mission’s Homeless Service. Founded in 2013 Street Soccer NI uses football to tackle homelessness. The Charity applies football as a hook to engage homeless people and then builds support packages around each player. Street Soccer staff provide support in housing, employability, mental health, and addictions to their players. The Charity has continuously grown and developed over the past 5 years and now has projects across Northern Ireland reaching over 100 people each week. One of Street Soccer’s flagship projects is the annual Homeless World Cup Team for Northern Ireland.

For the past 5 years Street Soccer has provided 4 months training and support to the team and brought them to compete in a ten day international tournament. This is an amazing opportunity for some of our society’s most vulnerable people to make positive changes in their lives.

Roseann Kelly is CEO of Women in Business NI (WIBNI). It is the largest and fastest growing business network for female entrepreneurs and senior business leaders in Northern Ireland with over 2250 members spread throughout all industry sectors. Roseann joined Women in Business NI soon after the organisation was formed in 2002 as a voluntary Director; she held the roles of Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Company Secretary during that time. She has been Chief Executive of WIBNI since 2009 overseeing a period of rapid growth and a successful sustainability strategy.

Roseann sits on the Department of the Economies Ministerial Strategic Advisory Forum. She also sits on the Expert Panel for the Review of Apprenticeships and on the Youth Training Review Panel. She is Chair of Diversity Mark NI Ltd, Vice Chair of Womens Tec NI and Committee member of both WINET and the Women’s Fund for NI.

Bernadine has worked in the private and voluntary health sector in the North and South of Ireland for more than 20 years and is a Registered Nurse with additional qualifications in Health Service Management and Sustainable Investment in the Third Sector. This course initiated an interest in Social Innovation.

Bernadine was initially involved with Alzheimer’s Society as a volunteer, joining the team as Service Improvement and Business Development Manager in 2009. After a period as interim NI Country Director, this was made permanent in May 2012. As well as this role she is the interim Co- Director of Campaigns and Partnerships.

A graduate of Ulster University in BSC Sports Coaching and Development and currently studying an MSc in Sports Coaching at Ulster University. Very passionate about football and the power of football to make an impact in the community for football and greater social outcomes. Andrew joined Irish Football Association in May 2016 as the Youth Development Co-Ordinator and has worked his way to become the Community Development Officer.

Andrew’s role is to work alongside UEFA’s strategic social responsibility plan and the IFA’s commitment to football for all. This requires him to present on sensitive issues and communicate the IFA Foundations’s work through the media team including their aims and objectives and how they deliver on projects. Andrew represents the IFA values of Social responsibility, community cohesion, education and community outreach and developing volunteers. Creating a team that provides football for all.

Andrew currently plays football for Linfield FC in his spare time. He also enjoys a night out and loves Bruce Springsteen.

Chris Cupples heads up the work of Christians Against Poverty in Northern Ireland. Christians Against Poverty passionate about releasing people from a life sentence of poverty, debt, unemployment and addiction. Working with the Church to bring good news, hope and freedom to thousands of people every year.

Chris has been leading the work of CAP in Northern Ireland for the last eight years - growing the network of local services from five to forty five in this time. He now leads a team of over 70 frontline staff who support hundreds of local families tackle poverty and it’s causes.

Chris is a keen road cyclist and loves good coffee!

Having graduated from the University of Ulster, Magee in 1991 with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Housing Management, Colm went on to complete the Henley Certificate in Management in 1992. He returned to the University of Ulster, Coleraine in 1999 where he obtained a M.Sc. in Social Administration & Policy.

Colm joined Supporting Communities, a NI wide voluntary community development & tenant support organisation with a dedicated staff of 25, in 1994 and during this time he has held various positions within the organisation including that of, Liaison Officer and Area Manager.

Colm took up the position of Chief Executive of Supporting Communities in January 2014 and since then he has been instrumental in leading the organisation and driving it forward through: the development of a new governance model, including a new Board of Management; a renewed staffing structure; the compilation of revised Strategic and Business Plans, investment in a Leaning & Development model for staff; creation of a new brand for the organisation in 2015 as well as the launch of a new trading subsidiary in 2017.

Gary McMichael is Chief Executive of ASCERT, a charity addressing alcohol and drug use and related social issues. He founded the organisation in 1998 to provide support in the Lisburn community and has developed the organisation over the past 20 years to become a leading service provider across Northern Ireland.

Gary represented the voluntary sector on the team that developed the alcohol and drug strategy for Northern Ireland and is a member of its steering group. He Chairs the Belfast Drug and Alcohol Co-ordination Team and is a member of the NI Alcohol and Drug Alliance.He has served on boards of a number of charities over the years including most recently VOYPIC and was a trustee of the NI Fund for Reconciliation. He has also had extensive involvement in civic and political roles.

He was an elected member of Lisburn City Council for twelve years 1993-2005. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum for Political Dialogue 1996-8 and was a principal delegate in the political negotiations that resulted in the Good Friday Agreement 1996-8. In 1998-9 he served on the NI Civic Forum and has served on the board of the Labour Relations Agency 2011-present. He has an BSc in Management Practice.

Barry Smyth has worked in the Voluntary and Community sector for 20 years.

He spent 11 years working with the Simon Community. In this leadership role Barry was central to the delivery and development of a range of homeless services throughout Northern Ireland and the development and support of multidisciplinary teams.

Barry spent 2 years as Operations Manager with the Suffolk and Lenadoon Interface Group (SLIG) where he supported the SLIG Management Committee to develop and deliver its Peace Building strategy while leading a diverse team of professionals in its implementation. This took place against a challenging political and social backdrop.

Since 2012 he has been Operations Manager with the Alzheimer’s Society and has led in the development and introduction of new dementia services in Northern Ireland, providing guidance and motivation to those managers who ensure the delivery of quality services to people affected by dementia.

Barry is also a voluntary Board member of MACS Supporting Children and Young People, which requires him to support and advise their Senior Leadership Team in their endeavour to provide a range of homeless and counselling services throughout Northern Ireland. This role has also involved him guiding individuals or teams on areas of work that he has had specific knowledge or skills in.

Ricky Wright is the founder of Vineyard Compassion, a Coleraine based charity that brings together a range of community based projects that offer a holistic approach to tackling poverty and its underlying root causes. He gets the opportunity to work with many wonderful people whose lives regrettably have been devastated in one way or another. As an innovator and social entrepreneur, Ricky has developed a range of projects and social enterprises to increase the impact of the charity, bridging gaps in service provision and meeting the needs of the most vulnerable. In 2015, he identified the need for a purpose-built facility for the charity and over the past 3 years has taken the lead to raise just under £1million in a capital fundraising campaign with over £750,000 raised from volunteers, supporters and the local community. The new facility has been project managed by Ricky and will be completed in February 2018, marking it a significant milestone for the charity and providing a platform for future development and further expansion.

Fiona Greene is Director of Care and Secondary Prevention for NICHS and as such is the senior lead for the development and delivery of services to people affected by chest, heart and stroke illnesses across Northern Ireland. In 1994 Fiona obtained her degree in Law from Queen’s University Belfast and since then she has worked in the third sector.

Previous roles have included Advice Services Manager with Gingerbread NI and Senior Manager with Victim Support NI, responsible for Policy and new service development. Fiona has been with NICHS since 2008, joining as the Area Manager for the Southern and South Eastern Trust regions. She is currently Chairperson of the Long Term Conditions Alliance Northern Ireland and is also the voluntary sector representative on the Armagh and Dungannon Integrated Care Partnership. She is passionate about working in collaboration for improved outcomes for service users.

Paula Heneghan has been a Registered Nurse since 1987, she has held various nursing roles across acute and community sectors with both voluntary and statutory organisations. Paula joined Marie Curie in 1995 when she left Health Visiting to take up a post in Palliative care. As a Regional Manager Paula has worked continuously to improve and deliver care to patients. She has been instrumental in introducing new innovative ways of working such as the Marie Curie Rapid Response services which improve access to care for palliative and end of life care patients in their own home.

Paula is committed to the concept of partnership working recognising its importance in the development of future services. The Northern Ireland Ambulance, GP out of Hours, Emergency departments, Trusts and Voluntary sector are organisations that she has built relationships with in order to deliver robust services that support the needs of patients at the end of life.

Heather is both a registered general nurse and a registered sick children’s nurse. Completion of oncology training at Northern Ireland’s cancer centre was the catalyst for a chosen career in cancer care and subsequently the development of cancer services. In 1986 she was appointed as the first Breast Care Nurse in Northern Ireland and remained in this role until 1995 when she took up post as an Oncology Nurse Advisor with Zeneca Pharmaceuticals.

In 1999 she joined Macmillan Cancer Support, and over this past nineteen years has enjoyed a variety of roles within the organisation, culminating in her current post as Head of Macmillan Services for Northern Ireland. In this role she seeks to influence strategically and has been instrumental in leveraging significant investment and service improvements for the region, such as the Transforming Cancer Follow-Up Programme and significant investments in the Specialist Cancer Nursing workforce.

Jacquie Richardson is the Chief Executive of Positive Life, Northern Ireland’s only dedicated charity supporting and promoting positive living for anyone with and affected by HIV.

Her role sees her deliver on Positive Life’s vision to de-stigmatise HIV in NI and to reduce the transmission of HIV, provide information, education and increase awareness.

She is a skilled, persuasive, energetic and confident senior executive with almost 30 years’ experience at a senior level in the community, voluntary and not-for-profit sectors.

Dawn is the National Director Northern Ireland for Action for Children. She joined Action for Children (NCH) in July 2000 when she was appointed as Development Manager responsible for establishing the organisation within Northern Ireland.

Dawn holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Psychology from the University of Warwick, a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Studies from the University of Southampton, a CQSW and a MBA and MSc in Executive Leadership from the University of Ulster.

She is a qualified Social Worker with over 30 years’ experience working in Children’s Services including residential children’s homes, statutory child protection, specialist child sexual abuse, therapeutic services, Adoption, Fostering, Early years and has led the development of family support and 16+ services. She has worked for Coventry, Hampshire and Wirral Social Services, Knowsley Schools Psychological Services, an Adoption Agency in England and tutored on the social work training course at John Moores University in Liverpool. She returned home to Northern Ireland in 1992 and has worked for a Health and Social Care Trust and two voluntary organisations as a Senior Manager before taking up her post with Action for Children.

She has been responsible for the development of Action for Children in Northern Ireland over almost 18 years. Dawn has been actively involved in the Children’s services Planning process in NI and she sits on the Children and Young People’s Strategic Partnership (CYPSP) including chairing the Early Intervention sub group and was instrumental in developing locality planning processes. She is also currently a member of the Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland (SBNI) and chairs the Neglect sub group.

Nigel has been with incredABLE for almost 15 years, joining back in 2003 as the sole member of staff. Over the past 15 years, he has overseen the organisation’s growth and development, delivering quality projects and services to over 600 individuals with a Learning Disability & Autism throughout the Southern Trust area through a broad spectrum of projects and services on a recurring basis. The work with incredABLE has defined his life to a large extent and a cause to which he is passionately committed. The role has changed significantly over the years and opened up an enormous array of opportunities and experiences in which he has the insight, determination and drive to seek and seize opportunities to develop the organisation further and offer a greater range of provision that reaches more people, meeting their needs.

Nigel is also a board member of three other charitable organisation’s- Down Armagh Rural Transport, Ulster Friends Trustees’ and The Robert & Kezia Stanley Chapman Trust. He is married with young daughter, lives in Ballyward and enjoys travelling and the outdoors.

Gareth is the Northern Ireland Regional Director for GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operate leisure facilities, libraries, children centres and sporting venues across the UK. The not-for-profit organisation re-invests surpluses directly back into the business for the benefit of its customers and local communities.

GLL set-up a partnership with Belfast City Council in 2015 to operate the leisure centres across Belfast under the customer facing brand “Better” and Gareth has headed up the team in Northern Ireland for 3 years now. Belfast has already seen huge developments within the centres as the Council invest over £105m in new leisure assets across the city. It is an exciting time for the city and this landmark move is welcomed by Gareth and GLL, which will see a social enterprise delivery model for such a key service in Belfast.

Dave is an innovator, social entrepreneur, mentor of social enterprises, leader, trainer, motivational speaker and the Founder and Executive Director of award winning Madlug C.I.C. which was listed as one of the 50 New Radicals 2016 for innovation and social impact by Nesta UK and the Guardian.

Prior to beginning his journey with Madlug, Dave was a youth worker for over 20 years with leadership, project development and team management experience, ranging across a number of youth work positions. He also had the opportunity to complete the intensive two-year Arrow Leadership Ireland programme.

Throughout his youth work career, Dave developed the skills that have enabled him to build Madlug by helping youth leaders and youth organisations with vision and strategy, project development, idea generating, problem solving and for the past two years he has become heavily involved in mentoring and raising awareness of social enterprises.

Seamus O’Prey an innovative and dynamic leader in the enterprise industry in Northern Ireland. Currently Seamus is the CEO of The Ortus Group, a social enterprise based in Belfast focussed on social and economic regeneration. The Ortus Group comprised of a number of businesses including FLEX Language Services, Ortus Property Services, Fire Risk NI and newly opened social enterprise Roar and Explore – a Children’s Indoor Play Centre in Belfast.

With over 20 years’ experience in supporting, leading and managing social enterprises Seamus is a driving force for change in the Northern Irish economy focussed upon expanding and growing a diverse range of businesses with a strong social ethos. A director and chairman of several boards, Seamus is highly regarded in the industry as a strategic leader whose input has seen the success of many businesses within the local economy.

Mandy has been a qualified social worker for 25 years working in the statutory sector in family and child care services, sensory support and then as a senior social worker in the Royal Victoria hospital for 10 years. She holds a CQSW and PQSW and Practice Teaching award in social work and a Bachelor of Science Degree. Six years ago she was asked to help with some action research seeking the views of older people residing in Mount Vernon, North Belfast, about their day to day lives and what supports could enable a more healthy, independent life. This marked the beginning of a journey with CLARE CIC and an amazing opportunity to explore how people in communities can shape and design innovative solutions to the pressing issues of loneliness and health and social care crisis. Just over a year ago she became the Project Manager for CLARE, working with an inspiring team of staff, Community Champion volunteers and the CLARE Board who all believe in the necessity of challenging the system to deliver differently and in real partnership with communities. CLARE are a small team with big dreams.

Gillian was educated at Friends’ School in Lisburn, the College of Business Studies in Belfast and was awarded a degree in Classical Political History by the University of Warwick.

Gillian managed the implementation of a new vaccination and immunisation programme in a challenging multi-cultural urban environment within Leeds Health Authority before moving on to direct and lead the Central Services department at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London.

On returning to NI, Gillian undertook a period of post graduate study within the management faculty at the University of Ulster - during which time she represented the ‘Voice of Women’ on a House of Commons working party chaired by Tessa Jowell MP. This preceded a move into the ‘Third Sector’ and the role of Chief Executive with Cancer Fund for Children.

Charlie Mack was appointed CEO of Extern in July 2013.

He previously held the posts of Group Director and NI Director at the Royal National Institute of Blind People. Prior to this he worked in the statutory and international private sectors in England until taking up a career in the voluntary sector in NI. He was also a senior manager in the NI Council for Integrated Education and the National Trust. He completed his MBA at this time and won a prestigious scholarship for voluntary sector management at Boston College, USA.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and is a Board Member of the Local Government Staff Commission and the Big Lottery Fund. He was previously a Non Executive Director of the Fire and Rescue Service and Committee Chair at the Northern Ireland Social Care Council.

Sharon Sinclair was brought up in Portrush. She has a degree in Applied Social Science from Coventry University, and a Post-graduate Diploma in Social Policy from the University of Ulster.

Her early career was in youth and community work in England. Since returning to N. Ireland Sharon has worked in the voluntary sector including periods with AgeNI and the Community Foundation for N. Ireland.

Sharon served as N. Ireland Director of Arthritis Care for seven years where, in addition to overseeing regional services and campaigns, she was a member of the organisation’s UK management team.

For the five years prior to joining the British Red Cross, Sharon was Chief Executive of the mental health charity, Aware, where she led the organisation through a period of sustained growth and increased public profile.

Sharon joined the British Red Cross in 2011 as Operations Director for Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man overseeing a growing portfolio of humanitarian services including Emergency Response, Community Resilience, Refugee Support and Independent Living. Sharon also holds a number of UK wide roles within Red Cross.

In January 2015, Heather joined Northern Ireland Hospice, located in north Belfast, as Chief Executive Officer. She commenced her nursing career in 1993, studying at the prestigious Queen’s University Belfast and later working at both the Royal and Mater Hospitals in Belfast.

As a senior nurse leader with over 20 years’ experience, Heather has worked in the public and charity sector, specializing in palliative care and leadership, both at a clinical level and at a leadership and management level. Committed to lifelong learning, she completed with distinction the MSc (Hons) in Executive Leadership in 2011 (Ulster University), equipping her to lead strategic organisational change programmes resulting in high quality, effective and efficient services delivered by an expert workforce. She has expertise in charity and clinical quality governance, quality improvement, project management and transformational change.

This category is not selected through a competitive process but awarded by the CO3 Board. This change in approach was driven from previous feedback we received from a significant number of CO3 members.

It will be awarded to a person who has role modelled effective and committed leadership. The person will have demonstrated dedication, professionalism and integrity throughout their career, and who has produced an identifiably profound effect on the sector through their leadership over at least a 20-year period.

LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO THE THIRD SECTOR

Last year we introduced the addition of an all-expenses paid three-day leadership exchange to Sweden as the prize offered to all of the award winners. The trip was a chance for the group to listen, learn and share experiences with their Swedish peers and proved to be a huge success. Building on the success of the exchange we will again be offering the 2018 Award winners the opportunity to network and engage with our Swedish peers in Stockholm in September 2018.
