READY, STEADY,…SEW!

France – 3 July 2014

M6

M6 is remaining true to its reputation as a constant

innovator by launching Cousu Main, (French for tailor-made). Presented by Cristina Cordula, the

new show will tap into the current interest in DIY programmes showcasing skilled amateurs and the renaissance of sewing.

Backstage wantedto find out more.

The judges Amparo Lellouche, Julien Scavini and host Cristina Cordula (right to left) assess a garment created by one of the contestants

In Cousu Main, M6 shows that sewing is defi nitely not just a pastime for grannies. On the contrary, all it takes is time, skill and experience, as opposed to money. Anyone can take it up and it’s hardly surprising that sewing classes and workshops are springing up all over the place, offering people an opportunity to tailor their own unique creations at very little expense. The phenomenal surge in sewing’s popularity is also being highlighted - and fuelled - by hundreds of blogs, expert publications and web tutorials on the subject. Moreover, sales of sewing machines in France have skyrocketed by 300 per cent since 2011, with 18,000 sold in 2013 alone!

“As the channel that launches most of the new formats, it was natural for us to explore this very real phenomenon and offer viewers a unique show focussing on this trend which is new to TV,” explains Anne-Sophie Larry, head of the channel’s External Flow Programmes Unit, and continues: “M6’s aim is to air an innovative and entertaining show that ignites people’s enthusiasm and from which they can learn new things.” The channel also believes that having the programme fronted by Cristina Cordula (see box page 7), with her legendary sunny disposition and expertise in fashion, “should help to create a warm, laid-back atmosphere for the programme,” Anne-Sophie Larry adds. And the catchphrase “Ready, steady…sew!” with which she starts each new challenge, is surely bound to gain cult status.

Cousu Main will bring together 10 contestants aged between 24 and 60, and from very different backgrounds, to share their passion for sewing. They will be presented with a number of challenges, ranging from the creation of very straightforward pieces to highly sophisticated garments, and they will have to prove their ability to make stylish,

high-quality items of clothing or use their imagination to transform basic items into spectacular one-offs. Throughout these challenges they will be watched and judged by sewing and design professionals Amparo Lellouche and Julien Scavini (see box page 8), who will assess their technical expertise and judge the originality of their designs.

The judges will then pit the contestants against each other in a grand fi nal that will see one of them crowned sewing champion. The winner will see his or her designs presented in a book, along with their sewing patterns, stunning photos of the garments in question, and numerous tips and explanations on how to produce such end results.

As Anne-Sophie Larry explains: “For this newshow, unlike any other ‘The Best…’ formats, the idea is to help viewers learn something new by immersing themselves in the process of clothes-making featured here with a modern touch.” Accordingly, Cousu Main will give viewers plenty of tutorials and present practical tips and tricks of the trade. In each episode, viewers will learn the basic essentials of sewing from professionals Amparo Lellouche and Julien Scavini and benefi t from step-by-step guides on how to create wonderful clothes.

In addition to offering a modern take on sewing, M6 also made sure that Cousu Main would not be a format that merely targets women or appeals to a niche audience. In the words of Anne-Sophie Larry: “The programme has been designed to encourage all viewers, not just sewing fans, to be creative. With its broad range of contestants and, above all, the participation of three men passionate about fashion designing, Cousu Main will unstitch all the popular clichés about sewing that are very far removed from the truth.”

The show will also give Cristina Cordula a chance to stretch herself as a presenter. She told Backstage: “Cousu Main is an opportunity I seized without a moment’s hesitation. For the fi rst time I will be fronting a programme, rather than being the expert people ask for advice. It was tremendous working with the judges and amateur designers. The fi lming was great fun, the atmosphere was relaxed, and we all really laughed a lot together.”

Cousu Main is the French adaptation of the British format The Great British Sewing Bee, which airs on BBC Two. The second series of the show ended in early April in the United Kingdom, and was watched by an average audience of 2.7 million viewers. The British press was full of praise for the programme, which was co-produced by Love Productions and the BBC. “The longer it went on, the harder it became to resist. After a while, even the sight of people doing some last-minute ironing ends up somewhere between hypnotic and genuinely exciting,” wrote The Telegraph, whereas The Times described the format as providing “the traditional delights of this genre: triumphant craftsmanship; unexpected disasters; and the joy of watching a programme put together to both entertain and inform.”

Cousu main will air on a weekly basis on M6 after the summer holidays.

LEARNING FROM COUSU MAIN

The various challenges faced by the contestants, and the advice offered by the judges and Cristina Cordula are designed to help viewers of the programme learn basic sewing techniques by:

Explaining the techniques used and helping them grasp new vocabulary, like brocading, binding off, serging and more

Telling fascinating anecdotes about the history of clothes making which reveal that:

Skirts have not always been made just for women: in the olden days they were unisex garmentsCodpieces were not always discreetly hidden away: during the Renaissance, men used them as somewhere to keep their handkerchiefs…or sometimes even fruitShirts were originally worn as an underwear beneath day-time clothing to prevent the soiling of outer garments

Presenting the various phases in producing a piece of clothing: choosing the cloth or material (texture and pattern), cutting it, using a sewing machine, the fine art of finishing (zippers, fly, buttons and more), making adjustments on a tailor’s dummy or live model, pattern alignment, and so on

In 2013, she got actively involved in Les Reines du Shopping, which was the most successful new programme airing before access primetime that year and remains highly popular, with almost a million viewers tuning in on average from Mondays to Fridays. THE JUDGES

Amparo Lellouche was born in 1945 in Spain. She trained to become a designer at Guerre Lavigne College, now known as ESMOD in France. She has worked in the fashion business for 40 years, designing for such big names as Lolita Lempika, Emmanuelle Khan, Diamant noir and then Balenciaga, where she stayed for more than 20 years, passing on her passion and expertise by mentoring such prominent stylists as Alexander Wang and Josephus Thimister.

Born in 1986, Julien Scavini initially studied architecture before switching to a prestigious tailoring school. In just a year he learned the basic skills and qualified as a tailor, with flying colours. He then swiftly made a name for himself in Paris, where he opened his own boutique in 2012. He has also been blogging about his passion for a number of years at stiff-collar.com and is a regular contributor to Le Figaro Magazine.

WHAT CONVINCED THEM TO DO THE SHOW?

“We were delighted to see the launch at last of a programme focussing on sewing and design. We were also both very keen to share our wide-ranging experience in this domain with viewers, and enable them to benefit from our professional outlook. What’s more, we were both curious to find out how good the contestants would be and were genuinely impressed by their creativity and ability to turn out pieces within very challenging time limits.”
