Corning Matrigel for 3D Cell Culture Corning Matrigel Matrix, a hydrogel based on an extracellular matrix (ECM), is suited to 3D and organoid cell culture and to other cell types and functions. Matrigel is a reconstituted basement membrane extract from Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) mouse tumors, and it contains the prominent cb-40230cECM molecules found in basement membrane. These components promote cellular viability, proliferation, function, and development of many cell types, as well as subsequent cellular responses that are more physiologically relevant (compared to cells grown in 2D environments). Corning also offers other natural ECMs, including collagen, laminin and fibronectin.
