unravel... a festival of yarnCelebrating all things yarn
Fri 21, Sat 22 & Sun 23 February 2020
Festival show guide & full programme
welcome! workshop schedulePlease check in at the Info Desk in the foyer 15 minutes before your workshop to let us know you’ve arrived.
Welcome yarn lovers to unravel... a festival of yarn! We are so excited to welcome you to Farnham and to this year’s festival – our biggest one yet. In Farnham we take pride in celebrating craft all through the year and love having you join us to celebrate yarn and all things yarn making: knitting, crochet, spinning, weaving and more!
New for 2020 we’ve created the Indie Maker Market, a market within our marketplace where you can discover new and smaller makers. We’ve also created the Inner Yarn Sanctum, a cosy place for you to hang out and socialise with your making, if you want to take some time away from the busy marketplace. You can find the Inner Yarn Sanctum in the Courtyard Kiln which will also be hosting our free Talks Series, sponsored by Garthenor Organic. We are grateful for their support.
Huge thanks to Jeanette Sloan and Lorna Hamilton-Brown of BIPOC in Fiber for being part of our exhibitor selection committee this year. Our curated marketplace is fit to burst with over 80 exhibitors, many of whom are brand new to the show alongside some of your favourites. We hope you’re ready to be overwhelmed by the yarny delights that await you. A further special thanks to our wonderful workshop sponsors. Their support means that many of this year’s workshops have yarn supplied – a great way for you to not only try something new, but discover a new yarn too.
Finally, be sure to check out some of the shortlisted submissions to our first ever design competition. The talent is second to none. The winning pattern, the Fireside Chat Cowl by Zanete Hussain, has been included in the show guide. If you love it as much as we do, you’ll want to cast on right away.
However you celebrate yarn, we hope you enjoy this year’s unravel festival as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together.
Happy stitching!Allison, Jo & CarolineThe Craft Team at Farnham Maltings

max alexander
Riverside Café
Max Alexander has been knitting moths since 2014 and has recreated over 50 different species in wool. Each of Max’s moths is hand knitted with Shetland Wool and the designs are as accurate as possible. Each moth is framed with small name labels in the style of a natural history display.
Max also designs and makes jewellery for knitters and crocheters. Her jewellery and cards can be found in the Maltings shop in the foyer.
Undercroft
Alison Ellen trained in textile design at Farnham Art College and worked first in hand-printed textiles. Alison approaches knitting as a way of constructing both a fabric and a 3D shape, exploring what the technique can do to alter the drape, thickness and stretch of the materials.
Alison takes inspiration from the surrounding countryside and gardens, and enjoys exploring shaping through the structure of knitting with an emphasis on construction.
Glass Box
Appropriating ancient nomadic traditions from her homeland Kazakhstan, Uriya Jurik works with found and organic media including sheep bones, felt and wool.
Drawing on wool and felt’s unique materiality, Uriya’s work embraces wool’s chaotic constitution as a metaphor for contemporary turmoil and makes palpable the holistic conception of the Universe which evolves through us - tiny, vulnerable wool fibres in the infinite interconnected tapestry of the world.
