UnpluggedRoulet Report

Christmas is next week, and we will finish 2012 and begin 2013 within 10 days. Many times the last 10 days of the year finds few people at work. A lot of people take off during the holidays, while several employees probably stay around during the holidays because it is a quiet and relaxed time.

2012 has been a very busy year. It has been one of the largest construction years, outside those WFEC built power plants. WFEC ended our lawsuits with members this year, and electric service began to our members in New Mexico. All in all, 2012 will go down as one of WFEC’s most successful.

And, 2013 looks very positive. Additional member load growth, adequate funding for construction, improvement in the economy, and continued stability for the future are likely.

Whatever your plans for the end of the year, hopefully you will enjoy the holiday season and be ready for 2013. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The Sperry–Piltz Ice Accumulation Index, or SPIA

Index, may come in handy next week as a winter

storm may or may not blow over Oklahoma. The

SPIA Index is a forward-looking, ice accumulation

and ice damage prediction index that uses an

algorithm of researched parameters that, when

combined with National Weather Service forecast

data, predicts the projected footprint, total ice

accumulation, and resulting potential damage

from approaching ice storms. It is a tool to be

used for risk management and/or winter weather preparedness.

The SPIA Index is to ice storms what the Enhanced Fujita Scale is to tornadoes, and 10321 what the

Saffir–Simpson Scale is to hurricanes. Previous to this hazard scale development, no such ‘forward-looking’

ice accumulation and ice damage index had ever been utilized to predict – days in advance – the potential

damage to overhead utility systems, along with outage duration possibilities, from freezing rain and/or ice

storm events.

One of the developers of the Sperry-Piltz Ice Accumulation Index is our very own, Sid Sperry, Director of

Public Relations, Communications and Research at the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives

(OAEC), Oklahoma City, OK. He has worked in the electric utility industry for more than 32 years. Sperry

began his career at Alfalfa Electric Cooperative in Cherokee, Okla. in 1980.

Energy Efficiency Tip

Your heat pump can use 10 to 25 percent more energy if it’s not properly maintained.

This includes regularly checking and replacing the air filter when it’s dirty to keep

parts from working too hard or even becoming damaged.

Keep brush and plants tidy around the outdoor unit, and dust the return registers

inside. For more details on heat pump maintenance, visit EnergySavers.gov.

At this holiday season, our

thoughts turn gratefully to

those who have made our progress

possible.

You can’t tell it by the photographs, but a great time was had by all, well...almost

all, at the Anadarko Employee Activity Christmas party, which was held earlier this

month. Close to 300 employees and their family members 09771 enjoyed good

food, fun and fellowship at the Anadarko High School Cafeteria. Santa made a special appearance and posed

for pictures with all the children and a delicious brisket meal was provided by Fishes-n-Loaves Catering of

Anadarko.

WFEC employees continue the time honored tradition to deliver Christmas cheer to several Caddo County residents in need through the local DHS Office. WFEC employees in Anadarko exhibited the true meaning of giving by providing everything that is needed for a wonderful Christmas for six local families, which included 17 children this year.

This tradition began many years ago and every year at Christmas, many WFEC Anadarko-based employees elect to sponsor a child by purchasing gifts for them, or donating money towards gifts and supplies for food baskets to provide a delicious Christmas dinner for each family. Several employees then take the time to organize all the gifts and food baskets, making sure that each family has plenty. Santa’s little helpers then wrap all the gifts and deliver them to Dee Sage for distribution for several unsuspecting families in the area.

Many thanks to everyone at WFEC for the gifts and donations for these local families in need of some Christmas cheer, and may you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The manner of giving is worth more than the gift.

Santa’s helpers and WFEC employees, Charlie Dunbar, Greg Butler and Phil Kirk help load up all the presents and food for distribution to local families in the community.

Be Prepared for an Emergency

From blackouts to big storms, the items you need to get through a worst-case scenario may already be in

your home — just not stored in one place. Since every second counts in a true emergency, corral these

basics in a portable container in the area of the house where you’ll seek shelter, but within easy reach for

evacuation: three days’ worth of food and water, a first aid kit, battery-powered (or hand-crank) flashlights

and radio, batteries (if needed), trash bags and duct tape (for sheltering-in-place; see ready.gov for details),

regional maps, and any personal sanitation or specific family needs, like pet supplies. Your only specialty

buy: medical masks to protect against air-quality problems and infections.
