Taking a deep breath in, I open the door.

pile of papers and folders on her desk and smiles.

She says, “Hello, you’re just on time! Please have a seat.”

Smiling nervously, I sit in the chair before me.

Future Interview “Your application looks very

promising,” She says as she pulls out a manila folder from the pile.

“You see there was only one thing that we questioned.” She pulls out a paper and reads out loud,

“Relevant experience and achievements. Your reply was, ‘unpaid assistant for many years’. Well, I would like to know, what you mean by this.”

In life we have one view. We view our own personal world around us. We focus on our personal world.

We focus on school, work, friends, bills, family, etc…

We hear the news and stories about how the world around us may affect things, but we stay focused on our main priorities.

There's nothing wrong with focusing on important matters, however, there is something grater then our own personal priorities.

Something that needs help, care, and to be changed

Our View

The Change “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do

something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”-Edward Everett Hale

There is so much we can do in today's society. We haven't consider the fact that we CAN do so much. Even as one person. We can make a difference

and a change for the greater good in this world. We are the only ones who can stop ourselves.

This change is something easily obtained through an open mind, and a willing heart.

This something is known as what I like to call an Unpaid Assistant.

Page 9: Unpaid assistant

Unpaid AssistantTo be an unpaid Assistant is to be a Volunteer.

The skill of knowledge gives us the key to make a change. We learn so that we can do something in life. This skill is something that can make a

difference, if we use it properly. One of the many ways we can use this skill is by volunteering. If we put our self out there with a giving heart, we can learn from the people around us. This can not only change the world we help, but our own life as

well.

I have learned this over the years. I have volunteered at many places throughout my life- Thrift stores, hospitals, soup kitchens, and helped local out reaches. I’ve been

to Alaska and Kentucky to seek and help people who live in poor situations and homes. I’ve worked with groups of people making food for the homeless, building

ramps for the disabled and I’ve sang to the elderly.

My current project was to serve food to the homeless. Prepare a tray with utensils, a napkin, and a plate. To bring a comforting smile and to help someone in need;

becoming an overall friend and comfort. To accomplish this I would volunteer at my local soup kitchen.

Soup KitchenHere is a photo of Eileen (my mentor) and her husband Moe.

Eileen has a giving heart and works with her local church as the head of the soup kitchen aka ‘Party for the Homeless’.

These are the four main women who run the soup kitchen

She and many others have been volunteering and keeping the homeless well fed now, for over a year!

People in the community help by donating lots of food, drinks, and even volunteering themselves.

Soup KitchenVolunteers and My Experienced Goals

This experience really has broaden my view on other people by “stepping in their shoes.”

Eileen has said that she has learned so much from the people she serves. They have really let her look into their world. She says she wants to help them and anyone else that she can.

Communicating and taking time to get to know the homeless has taught me to be patent and be willing to listen to people and learn from them.

Eileen is a Christian, and dedicates her life to her faith. She believes if she can also reach out to others, her Christian faith can influence them in a positive way.

My beliefs are the same as Eileen’s. She has influenced me to have the same faith and care like she has for others.

The community has helped Eileen many times by donating and volunteering.

The people I work with are dedicated and have a heart for helping others. They have reached out to so many people in need. They make a difference and I am proud to work by their side.

AwarenessI’ve learned so much through this experience.

I wanted to be able to share them with others. I wanted to bring an awareness that could

motivate, inspire, and encourage others to get involved and help. This would not only mold our

worlds future but our own futures as well. So how could I

deliver this awareness? How could I show that everyone could

make a difference, a change, a new

beginning and both walk away with a

better future?

My AchivementBeing the change

Through this project, I have learned that you can not force change. You can not go back in time and change what has

been done. However, I want to prove to everyone around me that you

can help and make a change in the course of how the world performs.

We can not only gain knowledge thru these experiences but give faith to those in need.

We can make a better tomorrow by seeking for a better today.

"Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from what you can do."-JOHN WOODEN

Page 17: Unpaid assistant

Future Interview I can’t hold back a smile as I say, “My experience and achievements have been volunteering, and keeping people aware of the importance of unpaid assistant.”

“I see,” The head nurse says,” So you volunteered, and you brought an awareness to it?”

I nod with a slight grin and say, “I have volunteered at many places throughout my life. The experiences

have made me who I am today. How I view life, think on issues, and even voice my opinions. A few years ago I created a website to help others understand the importance of being a volunteer. It gives detail of how it not only changes them, but the life around them. ”

Page 18: Unpaid assistant

Future Interview She smiled, “Wow!” She replied. “That’s very interesting. I would have never imagined that volunteering could really change someone as yourself. It seems that you are very caring and responsible. I can respect your view points and your logic. Can you jot down the link to your website? I’d like to take a look at it.”

I nodded and said, “Not a problem. I can-”   A loud beep cut me off. The head nurse picked up her pager from her desk and frowned slightly.   “I have to take this.” She said remorsefully. “How about we pick this up

tomorrow?” She smiled. I blinked in confusion then replied,   “Does this mean…” I trailed off hoping I wasn’t wrong.   “You start at seven.” She said shaking my hand. “Don’t be late.”
