Unmask a Child’s Future

Good evening! On behalf of the 40,000 children and teens served throughout Delaware, thank you for joining us for the 5th Annual Masquerade Ball “Unmask a Child’s Future!” This evening is about recognizing and celebrating the significant accomplishments of our Clubs, the life-changing programs and opportunities they provide to our young people and the Great Futures we are committed to building one child at a time.

The Masquerade Ball has become a model for the state. The county-wide efforts of planning and telling the story of this event continues to demonstrate the value of working together for a common goal. The commitment of our Sussex County Unit Boards, Staff and Event Committee make it possible for our Clubs to continue to offer scholarships and meaningful programs for children and teens throughout Sussex County.

Boys & Girls Clubs help kids achieve great futures by providing a safe and fun space, engaging Club Experiences with caring youth development professionals to guide them along the way. Your support continues to make this daily mission possible.

Our award recipient this evening, Fred Hertrich, IV encompasses the best of our communities and shares our vision of providing Club members life enhancing youth development experiences, building a foundation that sustains them for a lifetime. It is because of you; our donors, volunteers, sponsors, Clubs and community partners, that we fulfill our promise to more than 40,000 children and teens across Delaware.

Thank you for the numerous ways you elevate and improve the work of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware.

Enjoy the evening!

Sincerely,

John S. Wellons, President & CEO

The 2019 Great Futures Award is presented to Fred Hertrich, IV for his outstanding contribution to the community, exemplifying the highest ideals of organizational stewardship.

Fred consistently meets the needs of the community, enhancing the quality of life for Delawareans and inspiring others toward community service and responsiveness.

Fred and the Hertrich family have been proud sponsors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware for over two decades. Their contributions have spanned 3 generations and across the entire state. The Hertrich’s were instrumental in building the Western Sussex and Milford Clubs; contributing to general operating funds, funding sports leagues, donating to scholarships, and supporting countless special events like the Masquerade Ball.

As the Hertrich family has grown throughout the years, so has their support of the Boys & Girls Clubs. Fred has personally been involved in several projects, including sponsoring the New Castle Boys & Girls Club’s Basketball League, a 1931 Club Sponsor of the Masquerade Ball, and leading a significant Capital Campaign for the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club. In 2018, Fred and his team coordinated and sponsored one of the largest Boys & Girls Club summer field trips, taking 600 kids and 100 chaperones to the Delaware State Fair. This generous sponsorship included transportation, lunch, admission, t-shirts, as well as planning and leading a packed itinerary - full of educational opportunities and countless first experiences for many of the children.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware is honored to recognize Fred Hertrich, IV for his commitment to help strengthen our communities and for making a positive impact on the lives of young people in Delaware.

Shay Honaker, Running for Great Futures!Shay Honaker is a native of South Florida who grew up coming to Delaware each summer. He currently lives in Rehoboth and works alongside his family at Print Coast 2 Coast in Lewes. Shay began his journey with two simple words, “What if?”

“What if you lived up to your potential? What if you let go of the fear, self-doubt and negative thoughts that have held you captive and you chased after your dreams?” He began to ask himself, “What if?” “What if I too could build the mental fortitude to run an ultra-marathon?”

He took his first step, signed up for, and ran the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach, Virginia and has since continued to enhance his training, skills, healthy habits and desire to excel.

Shay’s sense of personal responsibility to our community and the future generations here in Sussex County has transformed his dream into so much more than a race - - to helping kids craft a life where they can find their purpose and live out their dreams.

Shay will run the Coastal Delaware Marathon on April 14, 2019 as his last training run before The Dunes 100 on April 27, 2019. Proceeds raised will benefit Rehoboth Beach Boys & Girls Club.
