    Prerequisites for SuccessDue to the intensity and nature of our program, we request that those in recovery have been sober for a minimum of one year before seeking admission. Some may find it more helpful to have two or more years in recovery. Please note that the courses are not intended as part of a recovery program to support participant sobriety, or as a replacement for therapy. Students are expected to be open-minded and willing to learn about and discuss new and different ap-proaches for the treatment of addictions.

    Working with Adolescents: Treatment and PreventionDiscuss the differences between adolescent and adult substance use/abuse, and review evidence-based ap-proaches for working with adolescents. Relationships with parenting style and parental substance abuse are considered. Treatment methods considered are family therapies, multisystemic therapy, and adolescent CRA (ACRA). Additionally, a program for working with family members to engage resistant teens into treatment will be introduced: community reinforcement and fam-ily training CRAFT. The prevalence and nature of common co-oc-curring disorders are reviewed. Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is presented as a comprehensive model for managing concomitant disorders.     Legal, Ethical and Professional PracticeAn introduction to the unique legal, ethical, and pro-fessional issues in substance abuse treatment. Special emphasis is given to confidentiality for clients and re-cords, documentation and case notes, Federal and New Mexico law, and NAADACs code of ethics. Profes-sional issues are discussed including dual relationships, and inter-professional communication. Special issues considered include drug testing, assessment of suicide risk, notification and reporting requirements, and interactions between probation, parole, and the courts, including common issues in forensic testimony.
