Making a Difference — MIT student use

“… OCW was one of the main reasons why I decided to come [to MIT] … I knew the contents of the courses, had a look to the materials, and a good understanding of what I was going to get ... that's the reason why I ended [up] here, and not in Stanford or Columbia.”

— MIT graduate student

“Even before joining MIT last year I started watching and enjoying many of your superb lectures. Needless to say, they were much better and captivating than anything I had attended before on the subject. These lectures have really enhanced my appreciation for physics.” — MIT student in Department of

Materials Science and Engineering 15

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds

›77% of MIT’s faculty are now participating in MIT OCW

›60% of MIT faculty are using MIT OCW to revise courses and advise students

“Is My Course Suitable for OCW?”

› Too busy

Incremental effort is minimal – typically no more than a few hours. OCW staff handles the rest.

› Not stable yet

Start with a baseline version. Many OCW courses are updated every couple of years.

› Not enough content because it’s [ a seminar / mostly labs / project intensive / chalk & talk lectures… ]

OCW is flexible in content. We can capture additional material during the term.

› Forthcoming texbook

Let’s discuss. OCW version needn’t conflict, as textbook is often a different “derivative work”
