Meet Ryan.

Ryan joined the Abilities family in July 2016. A recent graduate, his family was looking for a

program that would be a perfect fit for his needs. After taking a tour, they were positive that

they had found the program that would assist Ryan in reaching his fullest potential.

Anyone who meets Ryan comments on his infectious smile and laugh. Although he is non-

verbal, this has not hindered him from developing relationships with his peers and staff. He

loves to be a part of activities. Whether it be singing or playing instruments or just listening

while reading group takes place, he shows that he enjoys the interactions around him.

While Ryan uses a wheelchair, he does not let that slow him down. In recent months, Abili-

ties staff worked with Ryan’s mother and Abilities Occupational Therapist to implement

using a walker within the program. Not only does this provide Ryan the benefit of making

sure his muscles stay strong, but it has allowed him more freedom. He loves moving around

the program and often makes a game of it with “chasing” staff. His peers happily cheer him

on.

Ryan’s family has commented that he loves coming to program. How can they tell? They say

his eagerness to get up and get ready far exceeds what he demonstrated when in school.

His eagerness to come to program gives them peace of mind.

YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP RYAN, AND MANY OTHERS, TO REALIZE THEIR DREAMS.

A message from our PossAbilities Campaign Chair:

Because of stories like Ryan’s, I am honored and privileged to be the Chair of Abilities “PossAbilities” Campaign. We have watched this organization grow in providing critical services for people with disabilities. Every day Abilities assesses the strengths and needs of each individual to support them as they work toward their goal. Known for developing new and innovative ways to provide unique opportunities for success, Abilities truly stands out as being a leader in assisting those with disabilities. But without support from family and community stakeholders, it will be difficult for individuals to fulfill their dreams and goals. With your financial support, YOU are the key to unlocking PossAbilities. I invite you to join us in partnering with this amazing organization, truly committed to empowering the success of individuals with disabilities, and to our community.

Meet Carrie. Carrie began her journey with Abilities when her

family searched for a program that would challenge and support her

desire to be successful. Carrie shares her story below:

“I love coming to Phillipsburg Abilities everyday. Things I love most

are my friends, staff and supervisors. My staff help me with math,

writing skills, my self-help needs. In school I didn’t get out of the

building much. At Abilities I go out and explore other things. I have a

goal to plan my own outings once a month for somewhere I choose.

When I went to school they didn’t think I could write so they taught

me to type instead. Since Abilities started Occupational therapy, I

asked my therapist if we could work on my writing skills. I now am

writing sentences and able to do math by myself. I feel so confident

now. My mom and dad are so proud of me as well as my family. I now

work on a tablet almost everyday at the center.

I love the fact that I continue to grow everyday and my mom and dad

see my improvement in my skills. At Abilities, I feel like I am

challenged to keep learning new things everyday.” - Carrie

CURRENT LOCATION

Tammy takes pride in being able to volunteer in our

food pantry and give back to her community. At the

same time she learns skills leading to success, through

supports from our Abilities Team.

In 2001 a new

Quick Chek was

being built on

Stiger Street in

Hackettstown and

Keith wanted to

work there as the

coffee host. That is

where he went for

his first job… and

now 17 years later,

and still receiving

employment

support through

Abilities, he’s still

there. Keith makes delicious coffee, keeps the area

cleaned and stocked and provides amazing customer

service. Keith believed in himself, Abilities believed in

Keith and he followed his dreams and ACHIEVED his

goal.
