Server virtualization has become the norm in data centers for its higher utilization of compute resources and greater flexibility in placing and moving applications. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is also growing because it is much easier to administer than physical desktops. However, virtualization puts significantly more demand on system resources, including storage I/O, which it tends to randomize. To add, VDI is subject to periodic activities like boot storms that spike I/O demand.
