Hydropoweris the future

While the ongoing electrification transformation continues to have a wide-ranging impact across the energy sector, it brings new opportunities for renewable energy.

RENEWABLES ARE NOW MAINSTREAMRenewable energy is in a rapid transition period and is on track to becoming a fully commercialized, unsubsidized energy source. While many factors—including government incentives and specific market rules—affect how renewable energy can deliver outcomes for customers in a given region, renewable energy is competing successfully in the marketplace against fossil fuels in terms of cost of electricity (LCoE).

Wind energy is now the second-largest contributor to renewable capacity growth, while hydropower is projected to remain the largest renewable electricity source through 20231. Given the need for grid flexibility to accommodate more renewable energy, and the diversification of energy players, the hydropower industry continues to create value with new small-scale and hydro pumped storage projects.

VAST EXPERIENCE, HUGE INSTALLED BASEGE Renewable Energy has the largest installed base of hydropower storage units in operation. With more than 30% of the world’s hydro storage plants equipped with our technologies, we can provide a solution adapted to meet your specific needs in a variety of environments.

With a broad portfolio ranging from 30 MW to 400 MW per unit with heads up to 1,000 meters, GE Renewable Energy has a solution that will fit your specific site configuration. As one of the world leaders in this segment, we can supply not only pump-turbines and motor-generators but also the full electrical Balance of Plant (BoP), including power converters, transformers, High-Voltage (HV) switchgears, synchronous condensers and circuit breakers for new greenfield plants as well as the installed base.

HIGHER FLEXIBILITY AND REACTIVITY Thanks to GE Renewable Energy’s know-how and R&D expertise, our engineers have pushed the boundaries of design with the latest generation of pump-turbines. These solutions combine high performance, high hydraulic stability, and low vibrations.

Furthermore, our innovative pump-turbines are not only flexible but also reactive: Only 90 seconds are needed to switch from idle to full load for units up to 400 MW.

INNOVATIVE VARIABLE SPEED SOLUTIONS FOR EXTRA FLEXIBILITYGE Renewable Energy continues innovating with variable speed solutions that provide an extra-level of flexibility to the grid, delivering a more than 30% pumping power adjustment and a wider operating range.

For years, hydropower storage has offered a cost-effective way to provide large-scale balancing and grid services, with improved predictability on cost and performance. New hydro storage technologies—such as variable speed capability—give plant owners even more flexibility and quicker response times.

Furthermore, hydropower storage solutions also deliver ancillary services to improve grid stability by providing grid frequency support in both directions, reactive power compensation, and voltage support, as well as inertia and black start capability.

Hydro storage solutions

Countries around the globe have set ambitious renewable energy targets and grown increasingly reliant on sources such as wind and solar. However, to ensure that production consistently equals demand— a mandatory condition on the grid—power must be available when the wind isn’t blowing and when the sun isn’t shining. Conversely, when production is greater than is needed, stored excess energy can help increase overall profitability. Effectively managing the intermittent nature of renewable power requires solutions that offer additional flexibility.

The world’s largest renewable energy resource is hydropower, which accounts for roughly 16% of global electricity generation capacity. More than 10% of the hydro installed base provides hydro storage, making it possible to store great quantities of immediately available potential electricity and provide greater flexibility and stability to the energy network.

90’’ ARE NEEDED TO SWITCH FROM IDLE

TO FULL LOAD FOR UNITS UP TO 400 MW.

We live in a changing ecosystem where the needs for flexibility

and storage will increase the value of hydropower assets.

Large-scale hydropower solutions

Emerging economies and developed countries are actively seeking solutions to secure a renewable energy production, large and stable enough to support a sustainable and modern lifestyle, for all, everywhere. Today, hydropower accounts for half of all renewable energy installed capacity and nearly two thirds of all renewable energy generation7. It is one of the few power generation technologies which can completely transform a country’s energy profile with just one plant.

In Uganda for example, the Bujagali hydropower plant, located on the Nile River, near the town of Jinja provides 46% of the country’s electricity generating capacity. With 250 MW, the hydropower plant almost doubles the previous existing installed base of the entire country.

GE’s technology is central to many record-breaking hydropower plants including five of the world’s highest capacity hydro installations in operation: Three Gorges and Xiangjiaba in China, Itaipu and Tucurui in Brazil, La Grande power plants in Canada…

GE Renewable Energy’s portfolio covers a variety of hydropower plants, from high to low head and run-of-river configurations. Our teams work to make sure your hydropower assets deliver maximum performance, reliability, and performance, all through one dedicated point of contact to ensure effective coordination with all stakeholders during project development and beyond.

ROBUST DESIGN FOR ASSET RELIABILITYGE Renewable Energy’s patented hooped runners require fewer outage inspections. The ability to withstand mechanical stress better than forged or cast runners translates to as much as a 90% vibration reduction8.

The hard coating used on our Pelton turbines combines a broad knowledge of hydropower machine behavior with our analysis of the impact of sediments on equipment. This robust coating solution protects the hydraulic profile of the turbine against silt damage.

HIGH-SPEED GENERATOR TECHNOLOGY EXPERTISEGE Renewable Energy is covering the complete spectrum of generators required in hydro applications. Pelton-driven generators tend to have higher rotational speeds that lead to particular mechanical constraints. The knowledge in electro-magnetic, mechanical and CFD calculations together with the possibility to do tests in over-speed chambers makes it possible to design and test such units.

GE Renewable Energy is one of the leaders in high-speed generator technology, for both vertical and horizontal configurations. Recently, we put in service one of the largest horizontal higher speed-generators. Our expertise in ventilation and mechanical calculations comes to the fore in such applications. We offer product features such as bent pole coils to improve ventilation of axial cooled machines, or our signature stator core clamping system to ensure reliability by preventing any loosening or buckling of long stator cores.

GE Renewable Energy and Emrgy combine their strengths around a high-performing micro hydro technology. This solution is based on both proprietary designs in the turbine and drivetrain, and off-the-shelf components, to deliver a complete water-to-wire system. It is a self-contained module made of twin turbines (2x5 kW or 2x7.5 kW), generators, electrical cabinet, and is connectable to BoP/Grid. They are assembled and mounted in a self-stabilized concrete structure requiring no civil works. The system power output is 480 V, 3-phase AC, 50 Hz & 60 Hz.

PLUG AND PLAY AT A WIDE VARIETY OF SITESMicro hydro kinetics is a disruptive technology designed to use existing water infrastructure. It is based on water velocity, making it applicable to most existing canals and waterways. It is a full plug and play technology, easy and quick to install and/or remove and relocate in the future.

MICRO SIZE… MACRO (PROVEN) EFFICIENCYThis new, highly cost-effective, renewable energy solution, has many assets. Its performance levels have been tested both in laboratory and on site. Actual power rating and instantaneous output depend on site canal (slope, lining type) and flow (m3/sec) characteristics. The equipment type that can best suit a particular site is determined based on the average water depth.

This technology is scalable by equipping an existing canal with dozens or hundreds of 10/15 kW modules.

INCREASED ASSET AVAILABILITYThe Hydro APM Edge Analytics software—based on probabilistic and physics failure models—helps detect incipient failures and monitor critical hydropower equipment degradation over time.

The software also limits downtime and carves out additional availability due to earlier incipient failure detection, enables smarter decisions in corrective actions planning and O&M action, and boosts revenue by as much as 0.5% to 2%.

A new generation of Condition Monitoring System, called APM Edge Analytics, was connected to the Pont Baldy plant. It collected real-time data that we analysed to improve diagnostics and prognostics on faults.

The plant could be repaired at the best possible time to reduce downtime.

When a hot smell from one of the generators was detected at the Rocky Reach Hydropower plant in Washington, Chelan County PUD feared what the extent of the damage would be.

The operators immediately stopped the unit. They found a burned group jumper in the winding and even though the system had not been built by us, they called the engineers at GE Renewable Energy for assistance.

Carrying out repairs on a hydro generator is a bit like surgery: every plant is different and each one is located in a unique ecosystem that lives and breathes around it. This challenge in particular was highly technical and required dextrous and swift action from GE’s engineers, who used GE’s “Pit-Stop” option for generator rehabilitation to get Rocky Reach back to peak production fast. The GE Renewable Energy team worked like a Formula 1 “Pit-Stop” crew to replace the damaged coils and return the unit to operation.

A clear need exists for modernizing hydropower assets globally. At GE Renewable Energy, we estimate that half of the worldwide hydropower plants were commissioned more than 30 years ago and would benefit from operating life extension. Moreover, new operating modes require even greater flexibility and cycling capacities. And, the latest environmental policies often push hydropower operators to modernize existing assets.

With our century of experience in hydropower, we have developed a wide portfolio of retrofit and upgrade solutions covering the entire range of hydropower asset equipment: from generators, turbines, to controls.

PLANNED MAINTENANCE FOR YOUR PLANT’S SECOND LIFEBased on decades of hydropower industry expertise, GE Renewable Energy has integrated all of our newest technological advances to create a comprehensive portfolio of hydropower upgrade solutions regardless of original technology and provider.

Technology improvements allow us to understand the overall plant lifecycle and related economics better than ever. With this insight we can propose modernization solutions to be performed during your main maintenance or overhaul period, in parallel with your usual maintenance works.

However, you don’t need to wait for a plant overhaul to improve asset efficiency. GE Renewable Energy’s short lead time approach allows for the installation of standardized upgrade solutions in parallel with usual maintenance works, bringing increased reliability, availability, and operating performance (time response).

EXTENDED ASSET FLEXIBILITY AND OUTPUTGE Renewable Energy also has developed a complete portfolio of standardized upgrade solutions that can be implemented during planned maintenance, allowing execution and commissioning in less than one month.

Hydropower plant modernization goes beyond initial performance resetting. We can apply upgrades to your turbines, generators, control systems, excitation systems, and/or speed governors, delivering the latest innovations and outcomes such as: Up to a 7% improvement in efficiency for global performance As much as a 50% increase in output for optimized peak capacity
