THE FAIRY MEADOW COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD FOR 1975

The Rotary Club of Fairy Meadow plans to recognise International Womens' Year by making a special award for community service by a local woman.

The award is intended to recognise and provide support for a woman who, by leadership or example, has made a distinctive and effective contribution to the satis-faction of a community need which is not being met by existing organisations.

Any woman who lives or works in the Club's territory is eligible for nomina-tion. The territory is bounded by the escarpment on the west and the coast on the east, and lies between Balgownie Road and Smith Street as its northern boundary, and Gipps Road and Gipp Street as its southern boundary.

The Club's Vocational Service Committee will arrange to select from the nominees the person judged to have made the most effective contribution in the last twelve months.

The Club intends to present the award at its 1975 change-over dinner in July. Members want to ensure that the award will both recognise service and be of continuing benefit to the community. They have therefore agreed that they will provide, in the next year, support to the service which the recipient is giving, in whatever way proves to be most practicable.

Any Club member will be pleased to receive a nomination; enquiries can be directed by telephone or letter to the University Estate Manager, Mr. J.F. Bell. Nomi-nations close on Monday, June 16, 1975.

INTERVARS I TY BASKETBALL The Men's and Women's University Basketball teams were both very successful

at the 1975 intervarsity Basketball competition which was held at La Trobe University from May 12 to 16. Thirteen men's and thirteen women's teams entered the competition. Results. of the games played are;

MEN'S ROUND-ROBiN

Defeated Tasmania 46:14 (J. Mazzieri 10, W. Hammonds and H. Brandon 8 each)

Lost to Flinders 41:58 (W. Hammonds 11, R. Kennedy 8)

Lost to Monash 28:47 (W. Hammonds 12)

Lost to Western Australia 21:41 (W. Hammonds 7, R. Kennedy 6)

Defeated Newcastle 44:26 (H. Brandon, R. Kennedy, 12 each)

Lost to Melbourne 37:39 (D. Mangos 16, W. Hammonds 15)

This placed the team fifth in its division, and resulted in a bye in the quarter-final.

In the semi-final, the team defeated Newcastle 47:39 (Extra time was played as the score was 34:34 at fulltime.) (D. Mangos and J. Mazzieri, 10 each, W. Hammonds and H. Brandon, 9 each). The team went on to defeat Macquarie 43:30 (D. Mangos 16, W. Hammonds 8) in the final, placing it ninth.in the carnival.

Although the men played hard all week, it was not until the later games that the team displayed its true form with two convincing wins over Newcastle, and one over Macquarie.

Wally Hammonds (59 points) was ninth top - scorer in the round-robin and he was selected in the Intervarsity All Stars side.

The grand final was again taken out by Monash, by defeating Flinders 38:15. As the saying goes: "What do we think of referees?... they're foul. But what do we think of Flinders? ...they're ti

WOMEN'S ROUND ROBIN

The women's team performed better than the men's.

Defeated Melbourne 27:25 (L. Benjamin 9, C. Jones 7)

Defeated Sydney (forfeit)

Lost to Macquarie 14:27 (L. Benjamin 5, C. Jones 4)

Defeated New England 24:14 (C. Jones 8, C. Brown and L. Benjamin, 6 each)

Defeated Western Australia 34:6 (L. Benjamin 10, C. Jones 8)

Lost to Monash 12:35 (M. Williams 6)

This put it 3rd in its division. However, the team lost to La Trobe (16:34) in the quarter-final (C. Jones, L. Benjamin 6 each), defeated Queensland 28:22 in the semi-final (C. Jones 7, C. Brown 6) and went down to New South Wales 24:40 in the final (L. Benjamin, C. Jones 8 each, J. McLeod 6).

Thls gave the team 6th placing in the series, a tremendous improvement from being the 1974 wooden-spooners. The girls thoroughly deserved the high placing, as they played hard and well throughout all games.

In the women's final, Flinders defeated the 1974 champions, Monash, 75:61.

Page 7: University of Wollongong Campus News 29 May 1975

The carnival was a complete success, and La Trobe is to be congratulated for its wonderful organisation. There were no less than 6 Victorian A-Grade referees officiating at the carnival, and games flowed very smoothly. The social functions (3 in all) were well attended, and at the final dinner, Lynn Benjamin was named the Best and Fairest, Most Valuable woman player at the carnival - a really great honour-for Lynn and for Wollongong.

A good time was had by all, and the only question that remains unanswered is: "What did happen to Ross at the Latvian Club?"

INTERVARSITY AT WOLJANGONG IN 1977 As a result of a Universities basketball representatives' meeting held at

La Trobe University on May 11, it was decided that, subject to the approval of the Australian Universities Sports Associations, the intervarsity Basketball Championships would be held at the University of Wollongong in 1977. This is a FIRST for Wollongong, as no other official intervarslty competition has been held here before. To create a good name for the University, we hope to make this the best Intervarsity Basketball ever staged. To make a success of the venture, we will need YOUR support. The Basketball Club will need to raise some $7000, and all members of the University are asked to contribute and to assist in other ways. Helping the Basketball Club helps the University, which, of course, helps its members.

Later Issues of Campus News will outline ways in which members of the Univer-sity can help the Club.
