COMING SOON MARCH 14 - 17, 2020

Page 12: University of Wisconsin - Whitewater DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ...

This is an oddly wonderful show. Despite its Gothic tone, The Addams Family checks all of the boxes for classic, Golden-Age musical fun. Beneath the monster-movie motif burbles the familiar impetuous whirlwind of young love and the fond and affectionate misunderstandings that families can fall into. Indeed, for a show that has mined the pop culture ocean so deeply for inspiration, this is also a unique story of adorable characters who are well supported with an excellent score by award-winner, Andrew Lippa and a very witty book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. We have a stage full of energetic, young performers, lovely voices under Robert Gehrenbeck's expert direction and captivating dancers translating Piper Morgan Hayes' effervescent choreography. Thank you for joining us for all the creepy kooky, mysteriously spooky and charming, heartwarming oookiness of it all! - Director, Bruce Cohen

The predominant elements in Andrew Lippa’s score are the Spanish and Latin-American musical styles he invokes for Gomez and Morticia, making their music immediately appealing. Other characters’ music fits their personalities as well—Wednesday’s is modern and impulsive, whereas Fester’s is vaudevillian and reflective (with a nod to Claude Debussy’s Clair de lune). Alice Beineke’s bitter lament seems to draw inspiration from the troubled married couples of Stephen Sondheim’s musicals. The Addams Family Ancestors function as an opera chorus, interjecting their commentary into all the major scenes, while also recreating the soundtrack of a typical horror movie from the 1930s on several occasions. - Conductor, Robert Gehrenbeck

As a choreographer, I found inspiration through the tone of voices and atmosphere that the instruments create. Throughout the dance sections we explore ideas of sadness, inspiration, anger, joy, morbidity and even sensuality. Sprinkled throughout the musical you wil find hints of a Latin movement flair, the creation of a character through specific movement choices and a borderline between sass and sexy. There is a smorgasbord of different characters and qualities in this work and I tried my hardest to relate movement to lyrics in order to enhance the work and build up the character as we wish him/her/they to be viewed in The Addams Family. - Choreographer, Piper Morgan Hayes

We love your community support! When you purchase tickets to Theatre/Dance Department productions, it helps us continue our mission to provide high quality educational experiences for our students, as well as high quality productions for our audience. Ticket revenue is

an important part of our budget, and we appreciate your support.

Another way for you to support the Theatre/Dance Department is through tax deductible donations. Donations to the Department Scholarship fund help us continue recognizing extraordinary talent in acting, design and management,

and make a huge difference to our students. In addition, script royalties, costumes and sets are all costly and direct financial support or donated goods and services help us stretch our budgets further. There are also opportunities

to help with our annual regional theatre and dance festival trips, where students attend workshops and compete in design, choreography and performance, with the possibility of continuing on to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

Without an audience, the stage is a lonely place. Whether it be through buying tickets and sharing the evening with us, or through donations to scholarships, production costs and travel for students, community support is important to

us. You are important to us. If you have questions about supporting this good work, feel free to contact the Director of Philanthropy at 262-472-5472.
