Head coach Michael Burcin (BUR-sin) was named the men’s golf coach at Wisconsin on May 31,

2011, after seven years at the University of South Carolina where he was an assistant for the men’s golf program from 2005. Under Burcin’s steady instruction, the Badgers have improved every year winning their first golf tournament in nine years in 2015, and setting the second best scoring average in school history that same year. The 2014-15 team also had several top-five scores and finished tied for fifth in the Big Ten Championship, the best finish since 2007. In 2015-16, playing with just one senior, the team still managed the 13th best season scoring average with 299.0 stroker per round. The progress exemplifies Burcin’s goals when he was named the head coach. “Wisconsin is certainly a sleeping giant and I am looking forward to connecting with the golf community in the city and around the state. My No. 1 priority is to recruit the state hard and keep the best players with-in the borders. If you are able to do that, it usually leads to big things. “My goal is to develop a program that competes at a high level in the Big Ten Conference. If you are able to do that, because of the quality of the conference, you set yourself up to be a player on the national scene.” While an assistant at South Carolina, Burcin was named the 2010 Golf Coaches Association of America’s Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year. He was select-ed to serve as an assistant at the 2011

Palmer Cup, which took place June 9-11 at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition for teams of collegiate golfers from the United States and Europe which squared off in a three-day match play event. In Burcin’s time at South Carolina, the Gamecocks made six-straight NCAA regional appearances (2005-10), including winning the school’s first NCAA regional title in 2007. They advanced to the NCAA championship three times in Burcin’s seven seasons, with their top finish being a share of 11th place in 2007. In 2008-09, Burcin helped South Carolina win a school-record four tournament titles. In addition, four Gamecocks earned All-America honors and seven earned All-SEC honors during his tenure. With the 2016 addition of three more student-athletes at South Carolina gaining access to PGA Tour Canada last weekend, Burcin has recruited or coached 10 kids that have status on the European PGA Tour, PGA Tour, Web.Com Tour, PGA Tour Latin America, and PGA Tour Canada. In addition to assisting coaches with day-to-day coaching duties, Burcin’s pri-

mary role at South Carolina was to imple-ment and coordinate a recruiting program conducive to winning championships. Burcin was also the men’s golf liaison for the academic staff, and the team achieved at least a 3.3 grade point average in each semester and combined for a team-record 3.54 GPA in the fall of 2006. Before going to South Carolina, Burcin spent seven years as a golf profes-sional in Lancaster, Pa. His last stop in Pennsylvania involved developing an indoor teaching program at a retail golf store in Lancaster. While in Lancaster, Burcin kept an active playing schedule of section and chapter PGA events. Originally from Salina, Kan., Burcin graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Lampeter, Pa., where he was a 10-time letterwinner in three sports. Burcin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Liberty University in 2009. A member of the Golf Coaches Association of America, Burcin is mar-ried to Dr. Michelle Burcin, who was a standout swimmer at the University of Cincinnati. In 2011, the couple gave birth to their first child, daughter Josie.

Former South Carolina golfer, Blaine Woodruff, was hired as the assistant golf coach in January of 2016.

Woodruff graduated with honors from South Carolina in 2014 with a degree in business administration. The four-time All-Southeastern Conference Academic honoree played four years for the Gamecocks and was their scoring leader as a freshman earning MVP honors with his 74.11 scoring average.

He had his top tournament finish that year, taking second place in his second collegiate event, shooting a career-best 7-under 69-67-70=206 at the Mason Rudolph Championship. His 54-hole score of 206 tied for the 10th-best total score in South Carolina school history. Woodruff had five top-20 finishes in his collegiate career playing in 25 tournaments and achieving a career, scoring average of 74.79;

While at South Carolina, Woodruff was tutored in golf by his personal instruc-tor, Scott Hamilton, one of the premier instructors on tour right now, and Bill McDonald, the head coach at South Carolina. Both men helped provide Woodruff with a wealth of golf knowledge.

Michael Burcin talked about Woodruff’s college resume. “Not only was Blaine a standout junior golfer out of Atlanta and member of a perennial top-10 college program, but he was also a tremendous student in the classroom while being extremely organized and balanced within his golf and academics.

As the former assistant coach at South Carolina Burcin said, “I remember having conversations with Blaine about getting into coaching when he was a freshman in college so I know he is coming to Madison with a passion for the coaching business and the game of golf. Our players and alumni will enjoy working with Blaine!”

A native of Acworth, Georgia, the former two-time Georgia PGA Junior Player of the Year set the school record for scoring at Harrison High School with a 71.4 average in 2009. He helped the Hoyas to a AAAAA state championship in 2008 and 2010,

and runner-up honors in 2009 while serv-ing as the team captain and earning MVP honors.

As a prepster, Woodruff qualified for match play at the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur and was the three-time Atlanta.Junior Player of the Year. He was medal-ist in the 2009 Georgia State Amateur qualifier with a 66 and also qualified for the 2009 Georgia Open. He finished second in the 2009 Georgia PGA Junior Championship at 8-under.

Woodruff said of his first coaching posi-tion, “I am thrilled to join the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the assistant men’s golf coach. Being around the game for so many years has taught me how to become the person I am today, and I am excited to be able to return that favor with some of the top collegiate golfers in the nation.

“Through my experience as a collegiate golfer, I found out the impact that coaches have on you as a player. I look forward to being an additional resource for the players on the team that can hopefully make a difference in their career, or ulti-mately, their life. The facilities, academ-ics and community available to Badger student-athletes are among the top tier in the NCAA. I thank Coach Burcin for the opportunity he has given me, and I look forward to helping Wisconsin men’s golf become a contender not only in the Big Ten, but also at a national level.”

Woodruff assumed his duties January 4, 2016.

The CoachesPrior to 1922 Wisconsin did not have a varsity golf team, but competition thrived at the club level. The golf club represent-ed the university at some of the Western Conference Championship matches, placing third in 1906 and 1913, and fourth in 1915. Golf became a varsity sport in 1922, but Wisconsin did not have a coach until 1926 when Joe Steinauer was appointed for one year. George Levis took over in 1927 for a year, Andy Leith coached in 1928, and Levis returned for 1929–31. Steinauer then returned in 1932 and coached the golf team until his retire-ment in 1951. His dual meet record for 19 years was 100 wins, 61 losses and 6 ties (.617).

John Jamieson succeeded Steinauer in 1952 and boasted three individual Big Ten tournament champions and one team championship in 1957. In his 18 years as head coach, Jamieson’s overall record at Wisconsin showed 171 wins, 81 losses and five ties for a .675 percentage. His teams placed in the Big Ten’s first division five times, including a second-place finish in 1963 (one stroke behind Minnesota) and third-place finishes in 1952, 1955 and 1966. Tom Bennett moved into the head coach position after Jamieson’s retire-ment in 1969. He would remain at Wisconsin through seven seasons before being replaced by Dennis Tiziani. Tiziani brought the team into upper division status in the Big Ten, winning back-to-back men’s conference titles in 1993 and 1994, UW’s first Big Ten titles since 1957. Besides the two Wisconsin individuals that advanced to the NCAA championships, he led three squads to the NCAA regional championship, two of which advanced to the national champi-onship. Jim Schuman was named the sev-enth Wisconsin head golf coach in 2003. Schuman’s teams have had three of the top four lowest team scoring averages in school history including the record of 293.22 (7,917 strokes/27 rounds) set in 2004–05. His 2007 and 2008 teams were the last teams to attend the NCAA Regional Championships and he had an individual qualifier in Dan Woltman who attended the 2009 Regional. In 2011, Michael Burcin was named head coach of the Badgers after spend-ing seven years as an assistant at South Carolina. Burcin arrived at Wisconsin after serving as the assistant coach of Team USA at the 2011 Palmer Cup which took place in Greenwich, Conn.
