our unique geographyNew Zealand’s landscape contains an unrivalled variety of landforms. In parts of New Zealand, in a single day’s drive you can see mountain ranges, isolated beaches, native forest, glacial lakes, fiords and volcanoes. A strong tourism industry makes travelling easy.

Around one-third of the total land area is protected conservation land, including 13 national parks, three maritime parks, two world heritage areas, hundreds of nature reserves and ecological areas and a network of marine reserves and wetlands.

New Zealand is relatively free of pollution, unlike many developed Western countries, and is nuclear-free.

New Zealand’s temperature range is without extremes of hot and cold. Weather can change unexpectedly however, adding to the dynamics of each season. New Zealand’s high rainfall is evenly spaced throughout the year, producing vibrant areas of farmland and forest. Levels of humidity are very low and there are many hours of sunshine.

new Zealand is a country of extraordinary natural beauty.

our people, heritage and lifestyleWith a population of just four million, compared to some 128 million in Japan and 60 million in the UK, both roughly the same landmass, New Zealand provides plenty of room to breathe. Its society is based on a commitment to freedom of speech and human rights. Students who come to New Zealand feel a strong sense of freedom – to speak, travel, study and interact.

New Zealand is a member of the British Commonwealth, with English as an official language, yet it is home to many different

cultures. It has long been a sovereign nation in its own right. The vibrant mixture of indigenous Māori, European, Pacific and Asian influences makes for a diversified and compelling culture that combines a love of the arts with an identity deeply rooted in the outdoors.

Take a quick look at what this country has accomplished, and you start to get a sense of what New Zealanders are like. A New Zealander was the first to split the atom. It took a New Zealander to conquer Mount Everest. This was even the first country in the world to give women the vote.

New Zealand’s education system is modelled on the highly successful British framework and adapted to a unique approach toward learning – one which emphasises creative thought and heightened world knowledge.

You’ll be studying in a country where new and independent thought is encouraged and where creativity thrives. As a result, New Zealand degrees are recognised by employers and universities all over the world as practical, modern qualifications of high international standing.

Whatever you choose to do, wherever you choose to do it, you’ll find yourself in the company of a people famous for their hospitality and tolerance, and proud of their healthy, relaxed lifestyle.

A beautiful cityWellington is one of the most beautiful cities in New Zealand. The inner city, central suburbs and harbour are encircled by the Town Belt, a 4,250-hectare natural reserve on the first line of hills, incorporating many parks and walkways. This dark-green sweep is a vital part of Wellington’s identity.

Wellington’s distinctive architecture creates a feeling of accommodation and sanctuary. A small number of factories also means that Wellington is environmentally friendly. Wellington’s air is pure and its water is clean.

the ‘Coolest Little Capital’As the centre of government, Wellington has a network of important national institutions, including ministries, courts, libraries, archives and museums. Its business and governmental district sets Wellington at the heart of national and international affairs. As the nation’s capital, it is the chosen venue for many international conferences, sporting events and concerts.

For study, research and life experience, the city is a live-wire of information, with a strong awareness of its history and a keen dialogue with current events. Over 55% of Wellington’s working population has a tertiary qualification – the city is motivated and energised by the intelligent vision of its people.

As capital city, Wellington is home to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand’s bold and innovative national museum, which curates the nation’s extensive historic national art collection. Numerous art galleries throughout the city also exhibit contemporary international and New Zealand works.

As new Zealand’s capital city, Wellington is multicultural

and full of bright, open-minded people – it’s ideal for

international students who wish to study in a lively and

An easy, safe place to liveWellington’s urban design favours people and community over cars and traffic. Civic Square, Cuba Street Mall and Queen’s Wharf are popular centres, where people can walk, rest or gather for events in a traffic-free, colourful space. Services are in place to help people get around as safely as possible, such as Walkwise or City Information, who can help if you need directions.

Wellington’s hilly geography focuses its main amenities and activities on the compact city centre – most international students living in University accommodation or close to campus simply walk to anywhere they need to be.

Wellington also enjoys excellent public transport. Victoria’s campuses are connected by a large, dependable network of buses that enables you to travel around the city and to wider suburbs; and taxi services run at all hours. Kelburn Campus is linked to Lambton Quay, the business and shopping centre of Wellington, by an historic cable car – a charming, reliable way to arrive at lectures on time from the city.

Healthy lifestyleSurrounded by sea, hills and forest, Wellington offers great opportunities for outdoor recreation and sport. Victoria University Students’ Association organises many clubs which are free, or reasonably priced, to join. Popular choices include kayaking, hiking and mountain biking.

Some clubs arrange trips to other regions of New Zealand, such as the hiking tracks of Mt Tongariro or the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu.

Victoria’s Recreation Centre organises plenty of popular team sports, including soccer, basketball and rugby. Play to win, or just have fun – either way, you will meet friends and enrich your experience at Victoria.

Pipitea Campus

Located in Wellington, the geographic, political and

cultural centre of new Zealand, Victoria is at the heart of

an outstanding academic and political community that

shares a global perspective.Victoria is based in the heart of New Zealand’s capital city. The University offers great opportunities for students to collaborate with, and learn from, partners in Government, the public sector, science and technology organisations. It is also closely connected to the local business community, with its strengths in information technology and the creative industries.

Victoria has over 40 research institutes and centres on campus as well as many partnerships and links within Wellington, New Zealand and internationally. Much of our research is in response to current issues, such as climate change and emerging technologies.

Wellington’s strengths lie in the intersection of the public sector – government ministries and departments, national research institutions and national collections – and the private sector, with its focus on finance, IT, legal and business institutions.

Many of Victoria’s leading academics are involved in research projects in response to the needs of these institutions and are regularly consulted in areas significant to the country’s economic, social, political, and international welfare.

Victoria offers an outstanding academic, social and cultural experience. With a teaching focus on leadership, communication skills, and creative and critical thinking, our graduates are equipped to make a significant contribution to local, national and international communities.

In 2010, Victoria’s accounting and business degree programmes were AASCB-accredited, placing the University’s Faculty of Commerce and Administration in the top 5% of business schools worldwide.

Victoria continues to excel in research, contributing knowledge and expertise to the issues and development of New Zealand’s society and the world.

In 2009 the University opened the $5 million Coastal Ecology Laboratory as the flagship of our marine biology and ecology research programme, one of the biggest in New Zealand.

In 2010, the state-of-the-art Alan MacDiarmid Building in Kelburn campus was opened to provide additional teaching space, research laboratories and postgraduate study areas for a range of science disciplines.

What is study Abroad?Study Abroad in New Zealand is an opportunity to have a life-changing experience in one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in the world.

With programmes and study packages focusing on New Zealand and its environment, Victoria seeks to offer a total experience for the visiting student.

A full listing of Victoria University’s Study Abroad representatives in your home country can be found at www.studyabroadnz.com.

What is exchange?Victoria University of Wellington has formal Student Exchange agreements with more than 100 universities in 30 countries around the world – these are listed on the opposite page.

These partnerships enable students from an exchange partner university to study at Victoria for one or two trimesters while gaining credit towards their home degree. Exchange agreements are reciprocal – Victoria University sends students to partner universities abroad and also receives them.

Students are chosen by their home university and nominated to the exchange partner for final acceptance. Each exchange partner waives tuition fees for its visiting students and students pay tuition fees to their home university before departing on an exchange programme.

You must first be selected by your university and nominated for the exchange before you can apply to Victoria University of Wellington. Please refer to the list of exchange partners on page 9 to see if your university is listed.

sam MessingBOSTON,MASSAchUSeTTS,USAStudyingcognitiveScienceandPhilosophyI chose to study in new Zealand because I wanted to live and study in a new country and immerse myself in a new culture. I chose Victoria because of its location and course selection. Victoria had exactly what I was looking for with a good mix of courses that would fit my needs. not only that, it was in Wellington, a city that had been recommended to me by many different people.

so far what I enjoy most about living and studying in new Zealand is learning about all of the subtle cultural differences between Kiwis and Americans, which give momentary insights into the different ways cultures can approach the same situation. It’s these kinds of lessons that I couldn’t learn from a book, or a Wikipedia article, it’s the information that’s only transmitted through tactile feedback.

“What I enjoy most about living and studying in New Zealand is learning about all of the subtle cultural differences.”

julia LamskemperLINdLAR,GeRMANyGolfStudyAbroad, studyingInternationalBusinessandManagementI chose Victoria because of the unique golf study Abroad programme that they offer. I saw the great possibility to combine my studies with my hobby, gaining professional experience at the excellent Victoria Management school while also improving my backswing and handicap at two of the finest golf clubs in the region.

At Victoria, there are so many great courses on offer with engaged and

motivated lecturers. Also, Wellington is a great place to be with lots of midweek and weekend entertainment.

Coming to new Zealand was the best decision I ever made. being away from home makes you see the world with different eyes and broadens your horizons. you learn so much from Kiwis and people from other countries. everyone takes care of you. It really is a great experience!

the cost of living in WellingtonThe table below shows estimated living costs for one trimester at Victoria based on 20 weeks. The costs are based on 2011 estimates. Some costs, such as for Halls of Residence and insurance, are subject to change for 2012.

AccommodationStaying in a Hall of Residence is an excellent way to get to know Wellington. Most halls arrange a week of orientation to the hall, Victoria University and the city, and all provide a friendly, helpful place to live throughout the year. They offer the opportunity to live in a community of students from New Zealand and around the world.

There are a variety of Halls of Residence available for international students at Victoria. Some provide meals while others are self-catered.

Information about accommodation options and the application form are available through the Accommodation Service website or via the Victoria International Pre-arrival Tool.

Applications for accommodation need to reach the Accommodation Service by 1 october 2011 to be considered in the first selection round for February 2012, or 1 May 2012 for the intake of July 2012.

Applications received after these dates will be placed on the wait list and considered as places become available. Applications are accepted up to the start of each trimester.

The Accommodation Service also helps students find other accommodation such as private board, furnished rooms, vacant apartments/houses or a place in an established house. They operate an online vacancy service on their website that advertises current listings and is updated daily. Private housing is not checked or approved by Victoria University. Private housing is in high demand in February and landlords often insist on a six- or twelve-month lease.

At Victoria there are many policies in place to ensure you are treated fairly while you are studying.

student visas Before coming to study at a New Zealand university you will need a Student Visa. Your nearest New Zealand Diplomatic Office can provide you with the necessary information and the forms to complete. When applying for your Student Visa, you must show the letter from the University confirming your Offer of Admission as well as a receipt showing you have paid your annual tuition fees in full, or the equivalent. You must also prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your time in New Zealand. Note that there may be different requirements for different countries.

Retaining a Student Visa may be subject to academic requirements such as minimum course attendance and progress. For visa requirements, advice on rights to employment while studying, and reporting requirements see the Immigration New Zealand website, www.immigration.govt.nz

Medical and travel insurance Most international students are not entitled to publicly-funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may have to pay the full cost of your treatment. Full details of entitlements at www.moh.govt.nz

All international students must have current and appropriate medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.

The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (The Code) guidelines state the minimum standard of insurance required for an international student, see www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

Victoria University has a preferred travel and health insurance policy that meets The Code standards and provides insurance at an economical rate. Short course and family rates are also available. Payment for insurance can be made with tuition fees. The current insurance rate is published at www.victoria.ac.nz/international/current-students/insurance.aspx

Most insurance policies purchased outside New Zealand do not meet The Code’s standards, so it is vital to check with Victoria International at least six weeks before your enrolment before purchasing a policy from your home country. If you have a policy that is written in another language, it must be translated into English before Victoria International staff can check it.

If you purchase an insurance policy that does not meet The Code standards, you must purchase another appropriate insurance policy before you can enrol.

The University receives payment from the insurer. This payment is used to improve pastoral care and services for international students at Victoria University. Any residual is used for study awards and international student scholarships. See www.victoria.ac.nz/international or email [email protected]

Accident insurance The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides accident insurance for all temporary visitors to New Zealand but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. See www.acc.co.nz

Fees, levies and chargesInternational students (‘Students’) are required to pay a tuition fee for each course in which they are enrolled, course material charges, VUWSA subscription and student services levy, student assistance levy, and other administrative charges (‘Fees’). A small number of courses have an Overseas Travel Component as additional costs. For more information on these charges see the Victoria University Fees Statute (‘the Fees Statute’) at www.victoria.ac.nz/home/about/policy/academic.aspx

Any programme or course offered by the University and listed in its Calendar may be cancelled by the University as a result of insufficient resources or student demand. The Vice-Chancellor concedes that Victoria University has the financial resources available to refund fees to students enrolled in any cancelled programme. If a course is unable to proceed due to destruction or damage to buildings, plant and equipment and other tangible assets, fees will be refunded to the students affected. In this case the fees refund will be covered by the University’s Industrial Special Risks Policy and be classified as a consequential loss.

Refund statement1. Refunds All refunds of Fees to Students will be made in accordance with the most recent Fees Statute – see www.victoria.ac.nz/home/about/policy/academic.aspx Refunds for International Students are only processed once the Student has applied to the Student Fee Advisor in writing.1.1 A Student is entitled to a full refund of all money that remains in their account after enrolment. This refund will be granted provided the Student has paid their Fees in full and holds a valid student visa for the period of study. The monies will be paid directly to the Student.1.2 An International Student who withdraws from the University and transfers to another institution must inform Victoria International and their Student Fee Advisor in writing and provide copies of their new Offer documents. Study Abroad/Exchange partner (where applicable)

Please specify below the individual courses for which you wish to gain pre-approval.

Study Abroad and Exchange students must select at least three courses for pre-approval before their application will be processed. In the pre-approval process the Faculty assesses your eligibility for a particular course based on the prerequisites. You must discuss your course selection with your academic advisor, as it is only possible to undergo the course pre-approval process once. However, in the event that you do not gain approval into at least three of your courses per trimester, there will be the opportunity to go through the course approval process again. You will be informed of enrolment procedures after your courses have been pre-approved. Students who have an unconditional Offer of Place and are pre-approved into at least three courses per trimester will be invited to enrol online by email.

We strongly recommend that you discuss your course selections with your home academic advisor(s) before submitting the courses for pre-approval or enrolment.

Please note that some courses are limited entry and have early closing deadlines. Limited entry courses and closing deadlines can be found at www.victoria.ac.nz/home/admisenrol/enrol/limited.aspx

If you wish to be pre-approved for any of these courses please check what additional application documents may be required at www.victoria.ac.nz/home/admisenrol/enrol/selection.aspx or email International Admissions at [email protected]

Please note that the advertised limited entry course deadlines are for enrolment, not pre-approval. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you submit your pre-approval request for any limited entry courses at least four weeks prior to the advertised deadline to ensure that you receive the outcome of your pre-approval request in time to enrol online by the deadline. We can not guarantee entry into your chosen courses.

Courses can be selected from our Online Course Catalogue at www.victoria.ac.nz/home/study/subjects/coursecatalogue.aspx

It is important to ensure that the courses you choose are available in the trimester in which you will be attending Victoria University of Wellington. This is indicated in the Course Catalogue as follows:

The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students

(The Code) published by the Ministry of Education is a policy

specially designed for international students. It sets the standards

of advice and care that must be given by an institution to an

international student. Victoria University of Wellington has agreed

to observe and be bound by The Code.

Copies of The Code are available on request from Victoria

International or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education

website www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

Students or parents of students who feel an area of The Code has

been breached should document the breach in writing to the Pro

Vice-Chancellor, International, who will take all steps to ensure that

the grievance is settled. If a favourable result is not reached, the

case will be referred to the International Education Appeal

Authority (IEAA). The University agrees to be bound by the IEAA

procedures and will offer any information and cooperate with the

board while they investigate a complaint. Students have the right to

information about progress and decisions regarding their complaint

as well as translation services if necessary to ensure adequate

comprehension.
