L A S T Y E A R , D A R D E N challenged you — our incredible network of alumni, donors and supporters — to think big about what the School could accomplish. Together, we set a vision for Darden to achieve the full potential of its mission.

Your support went far beyond dollars. Your input is helping de-fine Darden’s strategy and ambition for the future. You mentored and hired students. You returned to Grounds to teach courses. You organized and attended Darden events around the world. You were passionate and engaged, and that made all the difference.

One year later, thanks to your support, Darden has accelerated its strong momentum toward the very top of the world’s great graduate business schools.

Last year, the School received its highest MBA ranking ever, named the No. 2 MBA program in the world by The Economist. The Class of 2016 graduated, finding immediate employment success, and more alumni than ever gave to the Darden Annual Fund. Darden established a physical and program-matic presence in the Washington, D.C., area, in addition to field offices in Shanghai and San Francisco.

It requires an immense amount of effort and resources to ensure our graduates leave Darden with the skills needed to be successful, responsible leaders and to attract the most talented new students. You went above and beyond, answering the bell with $19.7 million donated in fiscal year 2016, a 24 percent increase over the prior year.

Now, we must execute on your clear ambition that Darden be recognized globally as one of the pre-eminent business schools on the planet. You’ve set us on the path, and we’ll rely on your continued support through the University of Virginia’s upcoming Bicentennial Campaign to build momentum in several key strategic areas:

SCHOLARSHIPS / We’re already seeing the dividends of increased merit and need-based scholar-ship funding. If our support continues to rise, I predict we’ll continue to raise the banner of “most heralded class ever” year after year. Darden’s reputation will rise accordingly.

PEOPLE AND IDEAS / Tremendous faculty talent and staff excellence are key to the world’s best education experience, an advantage we must invest in to protect as we hire the next generation. But our professors are not just stars in the classroom. They excel at producing groundbreaking research with actionable insights for practicing managers, an area we must support to ensure global impact and recognition.

FACILIT IES / The arms race in global business education extends to a school’s facilities. We will begin to upgrade the Grounds in fiscal year 2017 as a precursor to major upgrades over the next decade that will ensure the Darden School retains its reputation for world-class facilities.

This is just the beginning. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Darden community. With my first year as dean com-plete, I thank you for the opportunity to serve this incredible institution. Together, we are going to improve the world in tre-mendous ways. Your support fuels our progress toward reach-ing Darden’s full potential.

Trust the Process

It’s a phrase that’s heard often among Darden First Year students:

“Trust the process.” And it’s easy to do when students can feel the

impact of the world’s best education experience (The Economist,

2011–15) changing their lives from the first day on Grounds.

What makes the Darden experience the world’s best? It’s a

combination of deep and transformational learning, supportive

faculty and staff, a close community spirit, an active student

life, a dynamic alumni network, strong links to global business,

and a storied history of developing leaders. It’s an experience

that uniquely prepares future business leaders for personal and

professional excellence and career advancement.

Worlds Best Education Experience

Student-Led Initiatives With the success of residential MBA students managing real investments through Darden Capital Management, the MBA for Executives (EMBA) Class of 2016 innovated its education experience by creating a platform for professional investing experience in a way that was tailored to the students’ busy schedules. The class tapped into endowment funds from the EMBA Classes of 2008 and 2010 earmarked for innovation in the program to successfully launch the Executive MBA Student Investment Fund.

Experiential Learning As a project for her “Design Thinking” elective, United Technologies Corporation Professor of Business Administration Jeanne Liedtka connected four Second Year students to NASA through one of her Darden Executive Education participants from the agency. The immersive experience allowed them to work with NASA employees and present findings on inspiring innovation and collaboration at NASA’s Convergent Aeronautics Solutions project.

A Secret Ingredient to the World’s Best Education Experience

Darden donors fuel a nimble curriculum tuned to the next generation of business opportunities. They understand that the key to maintaining the world’s best education experience is constantly evolving to meet emerging student needs and develop new skills desired in the workplace.

New Courses Data science skills are crucial for entry into the surging tech sector. Casey Lichtendahl, the Eleanor F. and Phillip G. Rust Professor of Business Administration, won Outstanding Case Teacher 2015 at the Case Centre Awards for “Data Science in Business,” a course he and Google’s Eric Tassone enhanced to keep up with the latest tech trends. The “Marketing Analytics,” “Software Design” and “Software Development” electives are also designed to build students’ hard skills in the field.

World’s Best Education Experience

Executive MBA Rises in Nation’s CapitalThe lights are on. The class is full. And Darden alumni made sure, through their unbridled enthusiasm supporting the launch of the new location, that the School’s first-ever Washington, D.C., area Executive MBA section is off to a successful start.

Announced in February along with a host of innovative enhancements to the MBA executive formats, Darden’s D.C. area alumni base (about 1,500 strong) jumped to support their alma mater’s programmatic entry into the capital region, introducing a strong pipeline of prospective students to the School.

Through the generosity of Frank Sands Sr. (MBA ’63) and Frank Sands Jr. (MBA ’94), Darden maintains space at the Sands Capital Management offices in Rosslyn, Virginia. Nearby, the first D.C. area section is taking classes at Rosslyn’s Waterview Conference Center. Darden’s administrative offices are opening in a third building, adjacent to Sands.

Helping Students Take Flight: Donors Pilot Global Possibilities

Paris introduced Thomas Jefferson to true luxury when he lived in the City of Light as the first U.S. ambassador to France. Two centuries later, Darden students and alumni walked in his footsteps, studying the business of luxury together in September.

Whether it’s entrepreneurship in Sweden or data science in India, when alumni join students on global learning opportunities, they enhance the educational experience by providing their unique perspectives. Donations to the Darden Annual Fund also support students who could not otherwise afford to join these global experiences.

Business today is global, and true business leaders must be global business leaders. Support for students to gain exposure to business around the world provides the leaders of tomorrow with invaluable experiences and skills that can’t be duplicated in the classroom.

Frank Sands Jr. (MBA ’94) and Frank Sands Sr. (MBA ’63)

E. Thayer Bigelow Associate Professor of Business Administration Greg Fairchild was named associate dean for Washington, D.C., Area Initiatives and academic director of Public Policy and Entrepreneurship in fiscal year 2016.

Fostering Action With Faculty Ideas

With philanthropic support, Darden’s faculty has the resources

to focus on the challenges executives around the globe face

every day in the business world. Alumni and donors are fueling

a generation of new ideas, market-facing research, curricular

innovations and course materials that are changing the way the

world does business.

The School aims to inspire innovative and responsible business

leaders to take real and transformative action to improve their

organizations. The Darden Ideas to Action website presents

business knowledge — research, analysis and commentary

— from Darden’s faculty. The School’s 10 research Centers of

Excellence are global leaders in areas such as ethics and the role

of business in society, entrepreneurship and innovation, asset

management, global business, and leadership.

Professor Lalin Anik joined the Darden faculty in the Marketing area at the start of the 2015–16 academic year.

Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Takes Flight

Through the Batten Institute for En-trepreneurship and Innovation, a deep roster of entrepreneurship-focused professors, and extensive financial and mentoring support from alumni, Darden has fostered a rich entrepreneurial eco-system. The School’s impact was tangible in 2016 rankings naming Charlottesville the fastest-growing venture capital ecosystem in the U.S. and the No. 4 city in the country for entrepreneurs.

Successful Entrepreneurs Learn to Think and Solve Problems “I always say, what are you going to do today, and how? It’s one thing to sit and visualize the whole thing. The idea here is to say what is actually do-able and how do we build that chain of do-ability.”

Isidore Horween Research Professor of Business Administration Saras Sarasvathy explains “ef-fectuation,” her groundbreaking research on the decision-making principles used by successful entrepreneurs. Sarasvathy was awarded the Jubilee Professorship in Technology Manage-ment and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden last year.

The Role of Business in Society

Business has the power — and responsibility — to change society and be a force for good. Aligning directly with the Darden mission, faculty examine and teach why business decisions should be based on ethics and values.

A Responsibility to Improve the World“We can be the generation that makes business better. But to do that, we need a revolution — a revolution of ideas.”

Elis and Signe Olsson Professor of Business Administration Ed Freeman continues his international leadership on stakeholder theory, examining how businesses can ensure their decisions are based in defined values. Last year, Freeman also published a new book, Bridging the Values Gap: How Authentic Organizations Bring Values to Life, with York University Professor Ellen Auster.

Multisector Collaboration “As a leader, being able to walk in someone else’s shoes is really valuable. Understanding your own incentives and being aware of your own situation is important, but it’s also critical to be aware of someone else’s — whether it’s someone within your own organiza-tion or an individual in another sector.”

Professor Mary Margaret Frank, academic director of the Institute for Business in Society, spearheads Darden’s effort to strengthen how the business, public and nonprofit sectors partner, through two initiatives: the School’s partnership with the U.S. State De-partment and Concordia to present the P3 Impact Award and the Tri-Sector Leaders Fellows Program.

Global Leadership With Meaning

Great leadership has always been at the core of Darden. Research into the ways leaders thrive around the world helps our faculty stay at the vanguard of the field of leadership. Darden professors focus on how responsible global leaders engage their employees and maintain their own well-being to benefit all stakeholders.

Leveraging Difference“Whatever their path, people who are different can stimulate growth, foster learning and catalyze innovation. Weird people can teach those of us who struggle to stand out and be noticed how to do so more effectively.”

Johnson and Higgins Professor of Business Administration Martin Davidson has pioneered “leveraging difference” as a way to manage diversity to generate superior performance. He delves into a special kind of diversity (“weirdness”) and how diversity of thought is an approach that can be good for business.

Building a Global Mindset“Transcending differences, combining the best of different cultures — the process of becom-ing ambicultural — offers a path toward balance and sustained progress in all our pursuits.”

Leslie E. Grayson Professor of Business Administration Ming-Jer Chen coined the term “ambiculturalism” and continues to advance its study, focused on how Eastern and Western philosophies and practices can be best combined for success in business management.

Defining a Dynamic Network

Darden’s network is a living, breathing thing — active, responsive,

engaged. The School’s 15,000 alumni in more than 90 countries

support each other and the School around the world with the

same passion and commitment that creates such a tight-knit

community on Grounds. The Economist rated the Darden network

No. 4 in the world for “Alumni Effectiveness” and Forbes ranked

Darden graduates No. 1 for satisfaction with their degree.

But a powerful, effective network isn’t defined just by rankings.

It’s in the willingness of alumni to reconnect with Darden again

and again each year, to share their expertise in Darden classes

and conferences on Grounds and around the world, to volunteer

and give in support of the next generation of Darden graduates

so that they, too, can become leaders who improve the world.

Dean Scott Beardsley, alumni and students enjoyed a walking tour of Paris during Darden’s Global Leadership Forum in September 2015.

Case Studies on a Network With Impact

Darden’s dynamic network makes a massive impact on Darden’s success. Our alumni and supporters advance the School in an abundance of ways — giving, volunteering, recruiting students, teaching classes and speaking at student-led conferences.

Answering the CallTrustee Kirsti Goodwin (MBA ’02) heard Dean Scott Beardsley’s strong case for increas-ing student scholarships last year and immediately helped the School advance this critical priority. She committed a major gift to endow a new scholarship for women, and the first Kirsti W. Goodwin Scholarship was awarded to a student in the Class of 2018.

Giving of YourselfDarden’s dynamic network is due in large part to the leadership of more than 800 alumni vol-unteers who bring the community together. The network flourishes because of efforts like those of the Executive MBA (EMBA) Class of 2011 Reunion Executive Committee, including class-mates Betsy Moszeter, Martin Poteralski, Dave Schmidle, Tom Tichenor and Michael Wade. To bring their class together for its five-year reunion, they built a team of 14 reunion committee members — 25 percent of the class, which resulted in 53 percent Reunion attendance, the most of any EMBA five-year reunion, and 98 percent participation in the Annual Fund.

Passing on KnowledgeReturning to Grounds to teach a class or speak at a student-led conference is a tra-dition for many Darden alumni. Alumni speakers last year included current and former CEOs from ADT, Citrix, Kitebrook Partners, Save the Children and more.

An Extraordinary Impact

Phil Knisely (MBA ’78) was recognized this year with the Charles C. Abbott Award, the highest honor the Darden School bestows upon alumni.

Presenting the award, Darden Alumni Association Board of Directors Chair Doug Moore (MBA ’80) credited and honored Knisely for his “extraordinary leadership and counsel to the Darden School.” During his nine years on the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees, including two as chair, Knisely was known for the guidance he provided to School leaders and new trustees. He and his wife, Pattie, established the Philip W. Knisely Fellowship Fund in 2011 to support outstanding students.

Knisely currently serves as an advisor to Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, chairman of Atkore International and a board member of Beacon Roofing Supply. He retired from Danaher Corp. in 2010.

The Cornerstone Society — Planned Giving Donors

On 6 October 1817, then-President James Monroe joined Presidents James Madison and Thomas Jefferson to lay the cornerstone of the University of Virginia’s first building, Pavilion VII. Continuing that initial support, Darden’s Cornerstone Society lays the groundwork for the School’s achievements in the decades ahead.

The Cornerstone Society comprises alumni, parents, faculty and friends who have made planned gifts to Darden through wills, living trusts, retirement plans, gifts of life insurance, charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. Through these planned gifts, Cornerstone Society members secure the success of our school for future generations.

Embodying a Commitment to Education

Professor Thomas MacAvoy made a great impact on the business world, on the world around him and certainly on the Darden com-munity. Dean Scott Beardsley acknowledged MacAvoy’s contributions at a celebration of new Principal Donors last spring, remarking that he “proved his commitment to education so deep-ly by including Darden in his estate planning. In doing so, Tom has followed in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison by making a planned gift to provide a secure foundation for Darden’s future.” MacAvoy’s 10 years as a faculty member and his $500,000 planned gift embody sharing one’s expertise and resources to improve the world.

Major Gifts

This list recognizes donors who made cumulative commitments of $100,000 or more between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016.

Punctuating a Lifetime of Leadership

As Mary Buckle Searle (MBA ’86) approached her 30th re-union, she asked herself, “How can I make my mark this year?” Searle has served as a class agent for decades and wanted to punctuate her long-term leadership with a philanthropic gift. The answer came through planned giving, allowing Searle and her spouse, Stewart Searle, to incorporate Darden into their estate with a $300,000 reunion-year planned gift. This commitment, alongside a pledge to the Darden Annual Fund, allows the School to best plan for its future and inspired Searle’s fellow classmates as they celebrated their 30th reunion at Darden.

Corporate Sponsors

The Corporate Sponsors program recognizes corporations that make annual, unrestricted gifts to Darden. These corporate sponsors supported various academic, student life and recruiting activities for the 2015—16 academic year.

A Masterful Partnership

For more than two decades, MasterCard has partnered with Darden to support the School’s faculty and research efforts in the areas of big data, finance, strategy and payments. In 1996, MasterCard established the MasterCard Professorship in Business Administration through a generous gift. The professorship allows a distinguished professor, currently Sankaran “Venkat” Venkataraman, to create and integrate a climate of innovative and entrepreneurial spirit into the curriculum at Darden. Since 2010, MasterCard’s corporate philanthropy has focused on the development of case studies, engaging five Darden faculty and resulting in three published case studies.

Spearheading this philanthropic partnership with MasterCard is Martina Hund-Mejean (MBA ’88), the CFO for MasterCard. Hund-Mejean serves on the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees, and she and her husband, Bruno Mejean, are Principal Donors to the School.

Such long-term, focused support from MasterCard exemplifies how corporations — and their leaders — can assess their own missions and make a distinct impact in the Darden classroom and beyond.

For more information on corporate partnerships, contact Elizabeth Bolin at +1-434-924-7898 or [email protected].

The corporate match gift program totaled more than $275,000 this year, maximizing philanthropic gifts towards Darden’s Annual Fund.

Expanding Students’ Potential With Scholarships

Scholarship support remains a critical element to recruit the best and brightest students to Darden from all walks of life. Scholarships allow top students to partake in the Darden experience, gaining the necessary resources to realize their full potential. The words of recent Emmy-winner Mayra Rocha (GEMBA ’16) express just how pivotal Darden is to a scholarship recipient.

“My experience at Darden has been a dream come true. This oppor-tunity has expanded my vision of life, business and culture. I have grown as a person, as a career woman and as a business leader. My voice is louder now, my stance is straighter and I no longer see anything as impossible. This MBA has given me structure. I see a problem and I automatically make a process in my mind to solve it.”

For more information on scholarship support, contact Kara R. Mullins at +1-434-243-0834 or [email protected].

Leading Supporters of the 2016 Darden Annual Fund

Gifts to the Darden Annual Fund provide essential operating funds and fuel emerging priorities, enabling Darden to seize opportunities and support innovation at the discretion of the dean.

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund support such critical Darden priorities as merit-based scholarships, extensive faculty research and curricular innovation. Thanks to the loyalty and generosity of Darden alumni, faculty and friends in fiscal year 2016, the Annual Fund reached $5.1 million in unrestricted contributions —guaranteed to touch and shape every aspect of the Darden experience. Forty-three percent of alumni made gifts to the School, which demonstrates the ongoing strength and commitment of Darden’s dynamic community.

The Hickory Club

The Hickory Club recognizes alumni who have given consistently each year to Darden for a minimum of three years. Hickory was Dean Charles C. Abbott’s ever-loyal black Labrador retriever and is a symbol of the dedication that Darden alumni express for the School through consecutive giving.

Hickory Club members enjoy special gatherings, such as book discussions with Darden professors on business topics, UVA football games, and luncheons and panel discussions during Reunion weekends. In fiscal year 2016, the Hickory Club reached 2,761 members. Listed here are 1,879 members who have given to Darden for 10 years or more.

“By almost any measure, it’s a time of great momentum at the Darden School. Our alumni and supporters have made clear that they want Darden to build on its ample strengths and be recognized as one of the world’s finest business schools— and it’s clear our network is willing to do what it takes to help make that happen.”
