University of toronto transfUsion CUrriCUlUm 2014-2015 At the end of this course, the attendees will be able to:

blood bank testing 1. Summarize basics about blood group antigens, blood bank tests and pre-transfusion compatibility

testing 2. Identify testing that is required prior to issue of safe blood for patients with immune

hemolytic anemias 3. Know when to screen patients for platelet alloimmunization

risks of transfUsion 4. State the current risks of transfusion-transmitted infections 5. Describe challenges to transfusion safety (getting the right blood to the right patient) 6. Prevent, diagnose, manage and report acute and delayed transfusion reactions 7. Obtain informed consent for transfusion

indiCations for blood prodUCts 8. Appropriately prescribe components (RBC, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate) 9. Infuse blood components properly10. Interpret coagulation testing results11. Have a reasonable approach to the correction of coagulation prior to procedures

indiCations for manUfaCtUred blood prodUCts12. Appropriately prescribe fractionated blood products (albumin, intravenous immunoglobulin, coagulation

factor concentrates) and emergency plasma exchange13. State when and how Rh immunoglobulin is administered in pregnancy

speCial transfUsion sitUations14. Know when to order CMV-negative and irradiated blood products15. Develop an approach to patients with congenital or acquired bleeding disorders (including reversal

of common anticoagulants)16. Safely transfuse a patient with sickle cell disease17. Manage a massively hemorrhaging patient, including surgical, trauma and obstetric patients, with

discussion of hemostatic medications (antifibrinolytics, DDAVP, topical sealants)

blood Conservation18. Have a standard approach to the management of pre-operative anemia, including how to interpret

the CBC19. Apply patient blood management strategies for a pre-operative patient, including patients who refuse

blood on religious grounds

appropriate additional training for:• Trainees in pediatric or adult programs in Anesthesia, Critical Care Medicine, Hematology, Oncology,

Obstetrics, Pathology, Clinical Pathology, Hematopathology General Internal Medicine, General surgery, Trauma, and Emergency Medicine.

• Staff physicians currently in the role of chair of the transfusion committee or director of the transfusion medicine services

• Blood management or transfusion safety nurses/technologists• A maximum number of attendees of 100 students (first-come, first served)
